Overview
EN ISO 12216:2022/A1:2022 is a vital amendment to the international standard specifying strength and watertightness requirements for windows, portlights, hatches, deadlights, and doors on small craft. Developed by ISO/TC 188 in collaboration with CEN/TC 464, this amendment ensures enhanced safety and reliability of openings on small vessels. The standard supports compliance with Directive 2013/53/EU relating to recreational craft and personal watercraft, helping manufacturers meet essential safety and performance criteria. This document updates previous definitions and requirements by removing ISO 11812:2020 reference and introducing new terminologies for sill types and companionways.
Key Topics
Strength and Watertightness Requirements
The standard defines critical structural integrity and sealing criteria for all opening fixtures-windows, portlights, hatches, deadlights, and doors-to prevent water ingress and maintain vessel safety under marine conditions.Terminology Updates
- Sill: A barrier above which water may enter companionway openings and potentially downflood the craft.
- Fixed sill: A permanent, integral deck part forming a sill.
- Semi-fixed sill: A movable but permanently installed closing device that raises the sill height when in use, such as sliding hatches or hinged doors (excluding removable washboards).
- Sill height (hS): Vertical distance from the sill top to the nearest deck point.
- Minimum sill height (hS min): The smallest allowable sill height designed to ensure watertight integrity.
- Flush deck companionway: A companionway fitted on an even deck surface without recess.
Companionway Definition
Openings designed for crew access fitted with opening appliances like doors or hatches, with provisions for multiple companionways on the craft.Amendment Changes
Removal of ISO 11812:2020 normative reference, revised definitions for sill and companionway, updated table titles and figure replacements to clarify sill measurement and construction.
Applications
Small Craft Manufacturers
Use EN ISO 12216:2022/A1:2022 to design and produce compliant windows, portlights, hatches, deadlights, and doors that meet structural strength and watertightness criteria, enhancing overall vessel seaworthiness.Marine Surveyors and Inspectors
Assess opening fixtures on recreational boats against standardized sill height requirements and sealing performance to ensure safety regulations are fulfilled.Regulatory Compliance
Supports manufacturers and authorities in meeting EU Directive 2013/53/EU essential requirements, enabling market access and legal conformity for small craft within EU and EFTA member states.Maintenance and Safety Professionals
Provides guidance for evaluating and maintaining watertight seals and structural soundness of critical openings in small vessels to mitigate water ingress and flooding risks.
