Overview
EN ISO 16138:2006/A1:2019 is an important amendment to the international standard covering industrial diaphragm valves made from thermoplastic materials. Developed by ISO/TC 138 in cooperation with CEN/TC 69, this amendment updates the original 2006 standard to reflect revised requirements for design, materials, testing, and installation of plastic diaphragm valves used in various industrial fluid transport systems. The amendment aligns with the European Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU, providing a harmonized framework to ensure safety, performance, and conformity across member states.
Key Topics
This amendment to ISO 16138 highlights several key updates that enhance valve quality and compliance:
- Materials Specification: Defines body materials compliant with updated ISO standards, including ABS, PE, PP, PVC-C, PVC-U, and PVDF. Manufacturers can declare different nominal diameters (DN) and pressure ratings (PN), enhancing design flexibility.
- Pressure and Temperature Ratings: Introduces revised minimum rating factors for valve materials applicable over a lifetime of up to 25 years, addressing performance across varying temperature ranges.
- Design and Testing Requirements:
- Design strength must comply with ISO 9393-2, encompassing pressure and long-term behavior tests.
- Seat and packing leaktightness tests ensure valves meet strict ISO 9393-2 standards.
- Manual operating forces are limited based on EN 12570 to prevent damage to valve diaphragms.
- Dimensional Standards: Specifies face-to-face dimensions for valves with flanged ends based on EN 558; other end connections remain manufacturer-defined.
- Conformity and Traceability: Emphasizes traceability of components and materials to support compliance with safety directives.
- Testing Protocols: Details material and valve testing in accordance with ISO 1167-1 and ISO 9393-2 for pressure resistance and durability validation.
Applications
EN ISO 16138:2006/A1:2019 applies to industrial diaphragm valves constructed from thermoplastic materials widely used in:
- Chemical processing plants where chemical resistance and corrosion prevention are critical.
- Water and wastewater treatment systems requiring reliable, leak-tight valve solutions.
- Food and beverage industries demanding hygienic valves that comply with material safety standards.
- Pharmaceutical manufacturing needing valves resistant to aggressive fluids and easy to sterilize.
- General fluid transport pipelines in industries where lightweight, non-metallic valves are preferred for process efficiency and safety.
This standard supports manufacturers, engineers, and quality assurance professionals in producing and selecting thermoplastic diaphragm valves that meet recognized safety and performance criteria, particularly for pressurized systems.
Related Standards
EN ISO 16138:2006/A1:2019 references and aligns with several key international and European standards to ensure interoperability and regulatory compliance:
- ISO 9393-2: Testing requirements for strength and leaktightness of plastic valves.
- ISO 1167-1: Methods for determining resistance to internal pressure in thermoplastic pipes and fittings.
- EN 558: Standards for face-to-face and center-to-face valve dimensions for flanged connections.
- EN 12570: Specifications on operating forces for valve actuators.
- ISO 15493 and ISO 15494: Specifications for thermoplastic materials used in industrial piping systems.
- ISO 10931: Component specifications for PVDF plastic piping systems.
- EU Directive 2014/68/EU (Pressure Equipment Directive): Essential safety rules for pressure devices marketed in the European Union.
By complying with these integrated standards, EN ISO 16138:2006/A1:2019 ensures thermoplastic diaphragm valves meet rigorous quality control, environmental, and safety requirements critical to modern industrial operations.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www .iso .org/directives).
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights. Details of
