Overview
prEN 1213 is a draft European Standard from CEN for building valves used in potable water supply systems. It covers metallic stop valves for water intended for human consumption in buildings and defines the main tests and requirements needed to support safe, reliable product selection and specification.
This document is applicable to metallic stop valves in the size range DN 10 to DN 100, designed for PN10 or PN16 installations and a distribution temperature of 65 °C. It also applies to stop valves combined with accessories in the same body. The standard does not apply to regulating valves or servicing valves designed specifically to isolate sanitary tapware or other sanitary appliances.
For manufacturers, installers, and specifiers, prEN 1213 is a practical reference for potable water valve compliance, product classification, marking, and documentation.
Key Topics
The standard addresses the essential performance and identification needs of metallic stop valves, including:
- Design requirements for stop valves
- Mechanical requirements and associated test methods
- Hydraulic requirements for pressure and leaktightness performance
- Acoustic requirements for noise-related classification
- Marking requirements for permanent product identification
- Technical documentation needed for installation and use
It also provides guidance on:
- Nominal size classification
- Flow rate classes
- End connections
- Material considerations for parts in contact with drinking water
- Test and drainage points in valve bodies
The document includes provisions relevant to dezinfication-resistant copper alloys where required, helping support product suitability in drinking water applications.
Applications
prEN 1213 is relevant across the water supply systems sector, especially in building services and plumbing installations where reliable shut-off valves are required for drinking water lines. Typical applications include:
- Residential buildings
- Commercial buildings
- Institutional facilities
- Building water distribution networks
- Plumbing assemblies with metallic stop valves
The standard supports consistent product evaluation for valves used in potable water installations, helping improve interoperability, product marking clarity, and installation confidence.
For stakeholders involved in specification, procurement, testing, and conformity assessment, prEN 1213 provides a clear framework for comparing valve types, including straight, angle, and oblique patterns.
Related Standards
prEN 1213 references several important European and international standards used in water installation and valve testing, including:
- EN 806-1 - Specifications for installations inside buildings conveying water for human consumption
- EN 1717 - Protection against pollution of potable water installations
- EN 1254-20 - Plumbing fittings definitions and thread dimensions
- EN ISO 3822-1 and EN ISO 3822-3 - Acoustic testing for water supply appliances
- EN 10255 - Steel tubes suitable for welding and threading
- EN 10226-1 and EN ISO 228-1 - Pipe thread dimensions and designation
As a draft standard, prEN 1213 is intended to supersede EN 1213:1999 when finalized, making it an important reference for the next generation of metallic stop valve requirements in buildings.
