Overview

EN 1213:1999 (CEN) specifies requirements and test methods for copper alloy stopvalves used in potable water supply in buildings. The standard covers material and design criteria, mechanical, hydraulic and acoustic performance, test procedures and marking rules. It applies primarily to copper alloy stopvalves with nominal sizes DN 10 to DN 100, rated for a working pressure of PN 10 and a normal distribution temperature up to 65°C (with occasional excursions to 95°C for up to 1 hour).

Key Topics

  • Scope and applicability
    • Copper alloy stopvalves for drinking water systems in buildings (DN 10–DN 100, PN 10).
  • Materials and design requirements
    • Acceptable copper alloys and design principles to ensure durability and suitability for potable water.
  • Mechanical performance
    • Strength, endurance and operational reliability requirements under expected loads and cycles.
  • Hydraulic performance
    • Flow characteristics, leakage limits and pressure resistance relevant to building supply systems.
  • Acoustic requirements
    • Criteria to limit noise generated by valves in distribution networks (important for comfort in buildings).
  • Test methods
    • Standardized procedures for verifying mechanical, hydraulic and acoustic performance - ensuring reproducible lab and field testing.
  • Marking and documentation
    • Required product markings and information to demonstrate conformity with the standard and facilitate traceability.

Applications

EN 1213:1999 is intended for practical use in the design, manufacture, testing and specification of stopvalves in potable water installations. Typical users include:

  • Valve manufacturers - to design and certify copper alloy stopvalves that meet European performance and marking requirements.
  • Plumbing and building services engineers - when specifying compliant stopvalves for residential, commercial and institutional buildings.
  • Testing laboratories and certification bodies - to perform and document standardized mechanical, hydraulic and acoustic tests.
  • Procurement and regulatory authorities - for product approval, compliance checks and procurement specifications in potable water systems.

Related Standards

  • EN 1213 is a CEN technical standard for building valves and complements other European and national standards governing plumbing materials, potable water hygiene, pressure ratings and valve types. Users should coordinate EN 1213 requirements with local plumbing codes and relevant material/hygiene standards for drinking water installations.
