Overview

EN 266:2020 is a comprehensive European standard developed by CEN that specifies requirements for textile wall coverings supplied in rolls. It addresses key properties such as dimensions, adhesion of yarns, and colour fastness to light. This standard provides clear guidelines on product marking, symbols for application, removal, and pattern matching, helping manufacturers and consumers ensure optimal performance and usage of textile wallcoverings. EN 266:2020 replaces the previous EN 266:1991, incorporating important updates aligned with modern manufacturing and quality assurance practices.

Key Topics

  • Dimensions: Specifies tolerances for usable width, length, straightness, and parallelism of roll edges measured according to EN 12956. The usable area must closely match the declared dimensions to ensure product consistency.
  • Adhesion of Attached Yarns: Sets criteria for the adhesion strength of yarns to the backing material, including a standardized test method (Annex B) to guarantee durability and prevent damage during installation or use.
  • Colour Fastness to Light: Defines minimum acceptable grades for colour fastness to artificial light, ensuring wallcoverings maintain their appearance over time. Testing follows EN ISO 105-B02:2014 with required ratings of at least 4 (satisfactory).
  • Symbols and Marking: Details mandatory and optional markings to be displayed on rolls or packaging. These include product identity, fibre composition, dimensions, colour fastness rating, application and removal methods, and pattern matching instructions. Symbols conform to EN 235 for consistency across the wallcovering industry.
  • Application & Removal: Provides recommendations for adhesive application techniques and removal methods, ensuring ease of installation and maintenance for both professionals and consumers.
  • Exclusions: Specifically excludes rigid wallcoverings, those not fully adhered by adhesive, and non-decorative types such as thermal or acoustic insulating coverings.

Applications

EN 266:2020 is essential for manufacturers, suppliers, installers, and consumers of textile wallcoverings used in residential, commercial, and public interiors. Applications include:

  • Quality control and product specification in textile wallcovering production.
  • Assurance of dimensional accuracy and durability for reliable installation.
  • Clear consumer information through standardized marking for informed purchasing decisions.
  • Guidance for designers and architects specifying textile wallcoverings in interior finishing projects.
  • Supporting installation professionals with consistent application and removal procedures.
  • Facilitating compliance with European regulations and harmonized standards to access multiple national markets.

Related Standards

EN 266:2020 references and complements several other key standards in the wallcovering sector:

  • EN 235:2020 – Vocabulary and symbols for wallcoverings, providing the terminology and graphical symbols used for marking and communication.
  • EN 259-1 – Specifications for heavy duty wallcoverings, applicable when enhanced durability claims are made alongside EN 266.
  • EN 12956:1999 – Methods for measuring wallcovering dimensions, straightness, spongeability, and washability, ensuring standardized testing procedures.
  • EN ISO 105-B02:2014 – Test methods for colour fastness to artificial light, critical for assessing product longevity and aesthetic stability.

By adhering to EN 266:2020, stakeholders benefit from consistent quality benchmarks, improved consumer transparency, and streamlined compliance across European markets. This standard is a vital tool for ensuring textile wall coverings in roll form meet modern functional and decorative requirements while facilitating easy installation and maintenance.

Introduction
A textile wallcovering is a wallcovering, the front face of which consists of natural or synthetic fibrous or
filament materials such as yarns, woven fabrics, knitted fabrics, threads, ropes, braids, felts, etc., which
can be attached to a base web. A textile wallcovering is expected to have adequate strength such that it
can be hung satisfactorily in accordance with the instructions given by the supplier and using the
recommended adhesive.
There are many types of wallcovering and varied processes used in their manufacture. To ensure
satisfactory performance, it is important that installers follow the manufacturer's recommended hanging
instructions for each particular product.
Various grades of colour fastness to light of textile wallcoverings are permitted and symbols to indicate
these grades are given in this document, as well as symbols to indicate pattern matching, means of
application and methods of subsequent removal from the support. This will facilitate the selection by the
consumer of an appropriate wallcoverings. Other European standards on the vocabulary and symbols
used in the wallcovering industry, for finished wallpapers, wall vinyls and plastics wallcoverings, for
wallcoverings for subsequent decoration and for heavy duty wallcoverings are also published.
