Ta evropski standard določa dve metodi merjenja vpliva dodajanja materialov z domnevnim učinkom apnjenja na tla z uporabo nekaterih osnovnih načel.

Overview
EN 14984:2016 - "Liming materials - Determination of product effect on soil pH - Soil incubation method" (CEN) describes two laboratory incubation methods to measure how liming materials affect soil pH. The standard provides controlled procedures to compare the liming effect of products under reproducible climatic and soil conditions. It supersedes EN 14984:2006 and introduces the option to express results as ENVI (effective neutralizing value by incubation).
Key topics and requirements
- Two test methods (same basic principles):
- Method A: Measures pH change on a defined reference soil over one month. Intended for standardised, tightly specified soil characteristics (pH range, CEC, organic carbon, clay fraction).
- Method B: Assesses liming efficiency using a range of defined soils and longer-term incubation (up to 2.5 years) to capture slower reactions and variable soil types.
- Product size limits: Not applicable to mineral products coarser than 6.3 mm (Method A) or 20 mm (Method B), determined according to EN 12948.
- Controlled laboratory conditions: Temperature-controlled incubation, regular pH measurements, standardized sample preparation and pot/test portion procedures (see referenced apparatus and reagents).
- Results expression: pH change, efficiency metrics and optional ENVI calculation (formulas added in 2016 revision).
- Limitations: Laboratory incubation methods are comparative and reproducible but do not replace field experiments - field conditions (mixing, agglomerates, climate) can affect in-situ performance.
Practical applications and users

The standard EN 14984:2016 outlines a rigorous framework for determining the effect of liming materials on soil pH, employing both a short-term and a long-term method for assessment. The scope of the standard is significant as it provides two distinct methodologies-Method A and Method B-for evaluating the performance of liming products. Method A focuses on measuring the immediate changes in soil pH over one month using a standard soil, while Method B extends the assessment period to up to 2.5 years, allowing for a deeper understanding of the long-term impact of liming materials on diverse soil types. One of the strengths of EN 14984:2016 is its dual approach to testing, which allows for a comprehensive evaluation of liming products. The first method offers a rapid assessment suitable for initial product comparisons, while the second delivers a more detailed analysis of effectiveness across various soil conditions. This flexibility ensures that stakeholders can identify the most suitable products for specific agricultural or environmental applications. Furthermore, the exclusion criteria regarding mineral products coarser than 6.3 mm for Method A and 20 mm for Method B are well-defined, which enhances the reliability of the testing outcomes by ensuring that results are not skewed by unsuitable materials. This specification supports the standard's relevance in providing clear guidelines for manufacturers and researchers aiming to compare the liming effects of different materials while maintaining quality control. Additionally, it is important to note that while the methods outlined in this standard yield comparable results under controlled climatic conditions, they are not intended to replace field experiments. This distinction reinforces the integrity of the standard by affirming that practical applications in varied environments must still be validated through real-world testing. In conclusion, EN 14984:2016 stands out for its systematic approach to evaluating liming materials, showcasing its significance in agricultural practices and soil management strategies. The clarity in methodology, coupled with its adaptability to varying soil types, ensures that the standard remains a valuable resource for stakeholders involved in the assessment and application of liming materials.
