Binders for paints and varnishes - Determination of hydroxyl value - Part 2: Titrimetric method using a catalyst (ISO 4629-2:2016)

ISO 4629-2:2016 specifies a titrimetric method for determining the hydroxyl value of resins, binders for paints and varnishes, primary alcohols, glycols and fats. Whether it can be applied for hydro carboxylic acids, phenolic hydroxyl groups, polyols such as trimethyl propane and substances containing aromatic groups have been activated for Friedel-Crafts acylation shall be decided on case-to-case basis.
Under the right conditions, the method is also applicable for determining the hydroxyl value of castor oil and its derivatives.

Dieser Teil von ISO 4629 legt ein titrimetrisches Verfahren zum Bestimmen der Hydroxylzahl von Harzen, Bindemitteln für Beschichtungsstoffe, primären Alkoholen, Glykolen und Fetten fest. Die Anwendbarkeit des Verfahrens für Hydroxysäuren, phenolische Hydroxylgruppen, einige Polyole, wie z. B. Trimethylolpropan, und für Substanzen mit aromatischen Gruppierungen, die für die Friedel-Crafts-Acylierung aktiviert sind, muss im Einzelfall geprüft werden.
Bei Anpassung der Bedingungen ist das Verfahren auch zum Bestimmen der Hydroxylzahl von Rizinusöl und seiner Derivate geeignet.

ISO 4629-2:2016 spécifie une méthode titrimétrique permettant de déterminer l'indice d'hydroxyle des résines, des liants pour peintures et vernis, des alcools primaires, des glycols et des matières grasses. Son applicabilité pour les acides hydrocarboxyliques, les groupes hydroxyle phénoliques, les polyols tels que le triméthylpropane et les substances contenant des groupes aromatiques activés pour une acylation de Friedel-Crafts, doit être déterminée au cas par cas.
Dans les conditions appropriées, la méthode est également applicable pour déterminer l'indice d'hydroxyle de l'huile de ricin et de ses dérivés.

Ta mednarodni standard določa titrimetrično metodo za določane hidroksilne vrednosti smol, veziv za barve in lake, primarne alkohole, glikole in maščobe. Ali ga je mogoče uporabiti za hidrokarboksilne kisline, fenolne hidroksilne skupine, poliole, kot je trimetil propan, in snovi, ki vsebujejo aromatične skupine, ki so bile aktivirane za Friedel-Craftsovo aciliranje, je treba določiti za vsak primer posebej. Pod pravimi pogoji se metoda uporablja tudi za določanje hidroksilne vrednosti ricinusovega olja in njegovih derivatov.

Introduction
There are several different methods standardized for determining the hydroxyl value of resins. The
classic method using pyridine without a catalyst is specified in ISO 4629-1. The advantages of the
method using a catalyst are the following:
— the solvents used are less hazardous to health;
— the solvent consumption is lower;
— the method is faster due to shorter reaction times;
— the end point of the titration is easier to see;
— polyols are more readily soluble.
