Overview

EN 13763-25:2025 is a European standard developed by CEN that defines the verification method for the transfer capability of detonating cord relays, surface connectors, and coupling accessories used in explosives for civil applications. Specifically, it addresses the testing procedures to ensure that these components reliably transfer shock waves during initiation. The standard excludes electric detonators, plain detonators, semi-finished detonators, and electronic initiation systems. This updated version supersedes EN 13763-25:2004, incorporating key technical revisions to improve clarity and testing accuracy.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Applicability
EN 13763-25:2025 applies to non-electric detonators, electronic detonators, surface connectors with shock tubes, and coupling accessories that link shock tubes or detonating cords. It covers the verification of transfer capability but does not apply to certain detonator types and electronic systems.

  • Verification Principle
The standard describes how shock waves propagate from one explosive component to another through connectors, relays, or coupling accessories. Successful transfer is confirmed by initiation or observable effects such as piercing or burning on taped ends or indentations on witness plates.

  • Test Apparatus and Materials
    Essential test equipment includes:

    • Specified shock tubes and detonating cords conforming to related standards
    • Means of initiation appropriate for the explosive article
    • Witness plates made from aluminum alloy EN AW-6082
    • Adhesive paper and conventional adhesive tapes for securing components and sealing open ends
    • Measuring devices for sample preparation
  • Testing Procedures

    • Surface Connectors: Connect up to five shock tubes, tape their open ends, and initiate the test piece. Successful transfer is indicated by damage (piercing, burning, discoloration) to all shock tube ends.
    • Detonating Cord Relays: Connect donor and acceptor detonating cords with witness plates taped to acceptor cords. Initiate the donor cord and verify shock wave transfer by observing indentations on witness plates.
    • Coupling Accessories: Attach detonating cords and relevant detonators to the coupling accessory, tape open ends if applicable, and initiate. Successful transfer depends on detonator detonation or tape damage as applicable.
  • Result Expression and Reporting
Results are recorded as "pass" or "fail" based on whether each test piece successfully transfers the shock wave to all connected components. The standard includes detailed guidance on documenting and reporting test outcomes.

Applications

EN 13763-25:2025 is essential for manufacturers, quality auditors, and safety engineers dealing with explosives for civilian use. Its practical value lies in:

  • Ensuring reliable initiation systems in mining, construction, and demolition blasting operations
  • Confirming performance and safety of detonating cord relays and surface connectors before commercial release
  • Supporting compliance with European directives on explosives safety and market supervision
  • Assisting testing laboratories in uniform verification procedures aligned with EN 13763 series standards

By following this standard, stakeholders can mitigate risks associated with failure to transfer shock waves, thereby enhancing operational safety and reducing false initiations or misfires.

Related Standards

EN 13763-25:2025 works in conjunction with several other standards for comprehensive explosives safety and performance regulation, including:

  • EN 13763-1:2025 – Requirements for detonators and detonating cord relays
  • EN 13630-1:2025 – Requirements for detonating cords and safety fuses
  • EN 13763-12:2025 – Verification of resistance to hydrostatic pressure of detonators and connectors
  • EN 13857-1:2025 – Vocabulary related to explosives for civil uses
  • EN 573-3:2019+A2:2023 – Chemical composition and designation of aluminum alloys for witness plates
  • EN ISO/IEC 17025:2017 – General requirements for testing laboratory competence (referenced for test reporting)

Together, these standards form a robust framework to govern the safety, reliability, and testing of explosives initiation systems for civil applications.

By adhering to EN 13763-25:2025, industry professionals ensure the dependable performance of critical linking components in explosive systems, supporting safe and effective operations in multiple civilian sectors. This standard represents a key element in harmonized European explosives regulation, bolstering safety, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance.
