Recommended test method for assessment of the risk of plasticizer exudation from PVC insulated and sheathed cables

The test method described in this European Standard shows, by the use of accelerated testing, discrete exudation of plasticizer from PVC insulated and sheathed cables. It is for use in circumstances where the manufacturer determines that there may be a specific risk that cannot be assessed only by use of the compatibility test in EN 60811-1-2, 8.1.4. This method is intended as a qualitative test on the completed product and not an individual material test. NOTE 1 Information on the background to use of the test is given in the Introduction. NOTE 2 Although any exudation is most likely to be of plasticizer, other components may also exude and, for the purposes of this standard, are treated equally in this test. NOTE 3 The method has been developed with special reference to PVC/PVC cables. No recommendation is given as to its use with cables based on other insulation and sheathing materials.

Empfohlenes Prüfverfahren zur Einschätzung des Risikos von Weichmacherausschwitzungen bei PVC-isolierten und -ummantelten Kabeln und Leitungen

Dieses in dieser Europäische Norm beschriebene Prüfverfahren zeigt, durch Anwendung beschleunigter Prüfungen, mögliches Ausschwitzen von Weichmachern aus PVC-isolierten und ummantelten Kabeln und Leitungen. Es ist für Situationen bestimmt in denen der Hersteller erkennt, dass ein spezielles Risiko bestehen könnte, dass allein durch die Durchführung der Kompatibilitätsprüfung nach EN 60811-1-2, 8.1.4 nicht erkannt werden könnte. Dieses Verfahren ist als qualifiziertes Prüfverfahren am fertigen Produkt und nicht als individuelle Werkstoffprüfung vorgesehen. ANMERKUNG 1 Hintergrundinformationen zur Anwendung der Prüfung sind in der Einleitung aufgeführt. ANMERKUNG 2 Obwohl jedwedes Ausschwitzprodukt höchstwahrscheinlich Weichmacher ist, können andere Bestandteile ebenso ausschwitzen. Für den Zweck dieser Norm werden sie bei der Prüfung gleich behandelt. ANMERKUNG 3 Dieses Prüfverfahren ist speziell für PVC/PVC Kabel und Leitungen entwickelt worden. Für Kabel und Leitungen mit anderen Isolier- und Mantelwerkstoffen wird die Anwendung dieser Norm nicht empfohlen.

Méthode d’essai recommandée pour l’évaluation du risque d’exsudation de plastifiant des gaines des câbles et des isolants en PVC

La méthode d’essai décrite dans la présente Norme Européenne, montre par l’utilisation d’essais accélérés, l’exsudation discontinue des plastifiants provenant des câbles à isolation et gaine PVC. Elle est à utiliser dans les circonstances où le fabricant détermine qu’il peut y avoir un risque spécifique qui ne peut être évalué uniquement par l’essai de compatibilité de la EN 60811-1-2, 8.1.4. La présente méthode est prévue comme essai qualitatif sur le produit complet et non sur les matières prises individuellement. NOTE 1 L’information sur les raisons de l’utilisation de l’essai est donnée dans l’introduction. NOTE 2 Bien que toute exsudation soit le plus souvent due au plastifiant, d’autres composants peuvent aussi exsuder, et dans l’objectif de cette norme, ils sont traités de la même façon dans cet essai. NOTE 3 La méthode a été développée en se référant spécifiquement aux câbles PVC/PVC. Aucune recommandation n’est donnée pour son utilisation avec d’autres matériaux d’isolation et de gainage des câbles.

Introduction

PVC, by its nature, requires the addition of chemical agents (plasticizers, extenders) in order

to generate useful and effective electrical grade materials for cable insulation and sheathing

having suitable flexibility. Use over many decades has shown that exceptional and

unexpected circumstances, coupled with particular installation conditions, may generate

unfavourable conditions in which the plasticizer or extender dissociates from the body of the
