Overview

EN 60335-2-65:2003/A11:2012 is a CENELEC amendment specifying safety requirements for electric air-cleaning appliances (air purifiers, air cleaners). It amends EN 60335-2-65:2003 and supplements EN 60335-1:2012, clarifying the particular requirements for appliances with rated voltages up to 250 V (single phase) and 480 V (others). The amendment (A11) was approved 2011-12-21 and aligns product safety with relevant EU directives, notably the Low Voltage Directive (2006/95/EC) and aspects of the Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC).

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Applies to household and similar electrical air-cleaning appliances used in homes, shops, offices, light industry, farms and appliances built into building ventilation systems.
  • Integration with Part 1: Supplements the general safety requirements of EN 60335-1:2012 with air-cleaner–specific provisions.
  • Electrical safety: Requirements follow Part 1 for insulation, earthing, and rated voltage limits (≤250 V single phase; ≤480 V others).
  • Mechanical hazards & construction: Stability, mechanical strength, guards and interlocks are addressed - e.g., guard interlock endurance: 5 000 cycles at 5 cycles/min (where applicable in Annex ZE).
  • Marking & instructions: Specific requirements for commercial-use appliances (Annex ZE) - instructions must state “This appliance is designed to be used in commercial areas” and include performance/safety information.
  • Noise: For appliances intended for commercial use, a declared A-weighted emission sound pressure level threshold is specified (instruction item: below 70 dB(A)).
  • Conformity & regulatory alignment: Annex ZZ explains coverage of essential requirements of EU directives and how compliance supports conformity assessment.

Applications - who uses this standard

  • Manufacturers and designers of air purifiers / air-cleaning appliances (household and commercial models)
  • Product safety and compliance engineers preparing technical files and CE marking evidence
  • Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies verifying electrical, mechanical and noise requirements
  • Procurement specialists and facility managers specifying safety and noise performance for commercial installations
  • Regulatory authorities and notified bodies assessing compliance with EU directives
