Residual current devices with or without overcurrent protection for socket-outlets for household and similar uses

IEC 62640:2011 applies to residual current-operated devices (RCD) incorporated in, or specifically intended for use with two pole socket-outlets, with or without earthing contact for household and similar uses (SRCD: socket-outlet residual current devices). SRCDs, according to this standard, are intended to be used in single phase systems such as phase to neutral or phase to phase or phase to earthed middle conductor. SRCDs are only intended to provide additional protection downstream of the SRCD. SRCDs are intended for use in circuits where the fault protection (indirect contact protection) is already assured upstream of the SRCD.

Overview

HD 62640:2015 (CLC endorsement of IEC 62640:2011, modified) covers residual current devices (RCDs) incorporated in, or specifically intended for use with, two‑pole socket‑outlets for household and similar uses - so‑called SRCDs (socket‑outlet residual current devices). The harmonization document is intended for single‑phase systems (phase‑to‑neutral or phase‑to‑phase) and defines requirements where SRCDs provide supplementary protection downstream, assuming fault protection is already provided upstream. HD 62640:2015 is a CENELEC document that supports EU directives (including the LVD).

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and classification: Specifies that SRCDs are only for supplementary protection in household and similar socket‑outlet applications and clarifies system types covered.
  • Rated values: Aligns preferred values with European practice - rated voltage 230 V and preferred frequency 50 Hz (per IEC 60038 reference).
  • Characteristics: Defines expected electrical and functional characteristics of SRCDs used with socket‑outlets (sensitivity classes, operational behavior).
  • Construction and marking: Requirements for mechanical and electrical construction, clear product marking and information relevant to installation and safe operation.
  • Testing and verification: Detailed test requirements for electrical trip behaviour, mechanical endurance, and response under supply‑failure conditions. The harmonized text includes specific test procedures and performance verification (trip performance and operation timing are covered).
  • Conformance and national requirements: Where IEC references relate to socket‑outlet design (e.g., IEC 60884‑1), the harmonized document defers to the national requirements of the country where the product is placed on the market.

Applications and who uses this standard

  • Manufacturers of RCDs and combined RCD/overcurrent devices designed for socket‑outlets in homes, hotels, offices, caravans and similar premises.
  • Product designers and compliance engineers ensuring SRCD designs meet European harmonized technical requirements.
  • Test laboratories and certification bodies performing type testing and verification against HD 62640:2015 requirements.
  • Regulators and procurement specialists verifying conformity with EU directives and national regulations for household electrical accessories.
  • Electrical installers and specifiers consulting the standard for safe application and correct selection of SRCDs within downstream circuits.

The standard HD 62640:2015 focuses on the application of residual current-operated devices (RCDs) specifically designed for two-pole socket-outlets aimed at household and similar uses. The scope of this standard aligns with IEC 62640:2011, emphasizing the safety and functionality of socket-outlet residual current devices (SRCDs). By defining the operational environment for SRCDs, this standard ensures they are effective in single-phase electrical systems, covering configurations such as phase to neutral, phase to phase, or phase to earthed middle conductor setups. One of the strengths of HD 62640:2015 is its clear delineation of the SRCDs' intended use, which focuses on providing additional protection downstream of the device. This specification reinforces the essential safety layer needed in domestic wiring systems, particularly in contexts where fault protection is already established upstream. By clarifying that these devices are not standalone solutions but rather a supplementary feature, the standard fosters a more comprehensive understanding of electrical safety in household settings. The relevance of this standard is underscored by its proactive approach to enhancing safety in residential electrical systems. With the increasing use of various electrical appliances and the potential for electrical faults, having a standard that governs the safety and efficacy of residual current devices is critical. HD 62640:2015 plays a vital role in maintaining electrical safety standards, thus promoting user confidence in household electrical installations and contributing to broader public safety initiatives. The standard's focus on both household and similar uses further ensures its applicability in a variety of environments, addressing diverse safety needs in modern residential infrastructure.
