Overview - EN IEC 60384-1-1:2022 (Fixed capacitors)

EN IEC 60384-1-1:2022 (CLC adoption of IEC 60384-1-1:2022) is a generic blank detail specification template for fixed capacitors used in electronic equipment. It defines the structure and mandatory content for sectional detail specifications within the IEC 60384-X series. The standard helps manufacturers, specifiers and conformity bodies create consistent, complete capacitor specifications covering ratings, tests, marking and quality assessment.

Key topics and requirements

The standard sets out the elements that every capacitor detail specification should include. Major technical topics are:

  • Ratings and characteristics - required information on dimensions, capacitance range, tolerances and rated voltage, and climatic categories.
  • Tests and performance requirements - a comprehensive list of electrical, mechanical and environmental tests such as visual inspection, electrical measurements, terminations robustness, thermal shock, vibration, shock, climatic sequence, damp heat, and endurance.
  • Marking, packaging and ordering information - mandatory marking on components and packaging, packaging methods and clear ordering data.
  • Additional information - guidance on storage, transportation, substrate for assembly, soldering, cleaning agents, and coating/potting after assembly.
  • Quality assessment procedures - options for 100% testing, certificates of conformity, qualification approval, maintenance of approval, quality conformance inspection and handling of non‑conforming items.
  • Annexes - symbols, abbreviations and visual inspection reference materials to ensure uniform interpretation.

Keywords embedded in the standard include: EN IEC 60384-1-1:2022, fixed capacitors, generic blank detail specification, IEC 60384-X series, climatic category, tests, quality assessment.

Practical applications and who uses it

EN IEC 60384-1-1:2022 is practical for:

  • Capacitor manufacturers - to draft product detail specifications that comply with the IEC 60384 family and to define required test schedules for qualification and production control.
  • Component engineers and buyers - to evaluate supplier data, ordering information, packaging and marking requirements.
  • Test and quality engineers - to implement required environmental, electrical and mechanical tests and to set up quality conformance inspection and qualification procedures.
  • Standards writers and regulatory bodies - as the template for new sectional specifications (IEC 60384‑X) addressing specific capacitor technologies.

Use cases include creating new product specs, preparing submission documents for qualification approval, and harmonizing procurement requirements across suppliers.

Related standards

EN IEC 60384-1-1:2022 references several related normative documents used in practice:

  • IEC 60384-1 (Generic specification for fixed capacitors)
  • IEC 60062 (Marking codes for resistors and capacitors)
  • IEC 61193-2 (Sampling plans for inspection)
  • IEC 61760-2 (SMD transportation and storage conditions)
  • IEC 62090 (Barcode and 2D symbologies for component labels)

This standard is essential for anyone specifying or qualifying fixed capacitors to ensure consistent, testable and auditable specifications across the electronics supply chain.

FIXED CAPACITORS FOR USE IN ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT –

Part 1-1: Generic blank detail specification

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this IEC Publication may be the subject of patent
rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.

INTRODUCTION
This introduction is not intended to be copied into the drafted detail specification. Therefore, it
is positioned in front of the conventional document structure and clause numbering range. It
nevertheless contains normative requirements to the drafted detail specification.
Scope of this generic blank detail specification
This part of IEC 60384-1 is applicable to the drafting of detail specifications for fixed capacitors
for use in electronic equipment.
Function of this generic blank detail specification
This generic blank detail specification is a supplementary document to the sectional
specifications and contains requirements for style, layout and minimum contents of detail
specifications. Detail specifications not complying with these requirements shall not be
considered as being in accordance with IEC specifications nor shall they be described as such.
The detail specification should contain a table of contents prior to the first page of the actual
specification.
In the preparation of the detail specification, the relevant content of the related sectional
specification IEC 60384-X shall be taken into account.
Units, graphical symbols and letter symbols should be chosen, wherever possible, from the
various parts of the IEC 60027 series, the ISO 80000 series and ISO/IEC Guide 99.
This blank detail specification uses for its purpose two different kinds of notes:
For notes which give additional information intended to assist the understanding or use of the
resulting document and therefore shall be copied as NOTE into the drafted detail specification.
As outlined in the ISO/IEC directives, these notes shall not contain any requirement, instruction,
recommendation or permission.
For instructions to the specification writer, COMMENTS are used instead of NOTES. For a clear
distinction, these comments are formatted as IEC-
