What are the key requirements of prEN IEC 60335-2-49:2026/prAA:2026?
Clause 1 broadens the safety view to reasonably foreseeable hazards affecting persons and domestic animals around the installation place or workplace. In practice, this means the design and instructions must consider more than the operator alone, especially where the appliance is used in public or semi-public areas.
Clause 5.5 sets the test conditions for evaluating the appliance. Appliances are operated empty where possible, user controls are set to maximum, doors or lids are in their intended positions, and motors are run in the most severe conditions expected in normal use; induction-heated appliances are tested with induction crockery on the trays and with all tray supports loaded. For a manufacturer, this fixes the worst-case test set-up and prevents selective test arrangements.
Clause 7.12 requires instruction content that depends on the intended place of use. For appliances intended for areas open to the public, the instructions must address supervision of children, use by persons with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, domestic animals, cable hazards, and checks before use; for other appliances, the instructions give the narrower non-public use statement. The same clause also adds practical information such as the intended use, user maintenance, safe adjustment and maintenance, stability conditions, accident or breakdown handling, personal protection equipment where hot food can spread, slippery-floor warnings, and the maximum weight of the empty appliance.
Clause 7.12.1 adds a working-height requirement for table-top appliances. The instructions must state that a support is needed so the working height is between 200 mm and 1800 mm. This helps installers and buyers choose the correct mounting or support arrangement.
Clauses 8 and 20 restrict the use of test probe 18. Test probe 18 is not applicable unless the appliance is intended for installation in an area open to the public. That matters because the access test is adjusted to the actual use environment rather than applying the same probe condition to every appliance.
Clause 22 adds construction, hygiene, and ergonomic requirements. Lids must have at least one handle if they are not motorized, the appliance is assigned Fluid Category 2 or 3 depending on whether it has a cleaning system, and the new ergonomic subclause requires visible and identifiable controls, easy reach, and protection against accidental actuation where a hazard could result. The same clause also introduces hygiene requirements checked by inspection and by Annex ZAA.
Annex ZE is specific to appliances with power driven moving parts. It sets additional scope and instruction rules, includes an airborne-noise statement tied to an A-weighted emission sound pressure level of 70 dB(A) or less, and specifies a guard cycling test of 5 000 cycles at 5 cycles per minute. In practice, this targets mechanical hazards and the safety of moving guards and interlocks.
Annex ZAA defines the hygiene approach for two appliance types - crockery warmers and food warmers. For food warmers, it splits the appliance into food area, splash area, and non-food area, then applies hygiene rules for surfaces, joints, fasteners, ventilation openings, cleanability, and maintenance information, with several exceptions linked to temperatures of 82 °C or more and to the user instructions. This is important because it turns hygiene into a design and documentation issue, not only a cleaning issue after installation.
What terms does prEN IEC 60335-2-49:2026/prAA:2026 define?
Appliance is used with the same meaning as equipment, and in this document it also includes machine where applicable. This keeps the scope broad enough for products that combine warming and machine-like functions.
Radio appliance is used with the same meaning as radio equipment. That matters because the document includes appliances with radio function, remote communication, and remote operation.
Food area is the part of the appliance where food is placed or held. Annex ZAA uses it to separate hygienically critical surfaces from less critical ones.
