Overview
prEN IEC 61300-2-29:2026 is a draft international standard developed by the IEC, under subcommittee 86B (Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components). This document specifies standardized procedures for testing the performance of fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components under conditions of low air pressure. This test is fundamental for ensuring product robustness and reliability, particularly for applications where optical components are exposed to reduced atmospheric pressures, such as in aerospace or high-altitude environments.
The standard details comprehensive steps for test preparation, measurement, and reporting, providing valuable guidance for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and quality assurance teams working with fibre optic technology.
Key Topics
- Test Purpose: Establishes a method to evaluate how fibre optic devices and components respond to low air pressure conditions.
- Test Procedure: Defines detailed steps including device preparation, preconditioning, initial and final measurements, pressure reduction, exposure period, and recovery.
- Apparatus Requirements: Specifies the test chamber and optical measurement equipment necessary for obtaining valid results.
- Severity of Test: Outlines acceptable air pressure values (as low as 5.5 kPa, representing altitudes up to 20,000 m) and exposure durations for the test, selected according to specific product requirements.
- Measurement Parameters: Focuses on key optical characteristics such as attenuation and return loss to assess performance changes during and after exposure.
- Reporting: Lists the details that must be documented in the test report, including device under test (DUT) characteristics, test conditions, procedures followed, measurements taken, and any deviations or additional criteria used.
- Reference to Other Standards: The document references related standards within the IEC 61300 and IEC 61753 series for performance and measurement details.
Applications
The IEC 61300-2-29:2026 low air pressure test is critical for a wide range of practical scenarios in fibre optic communications, including:
- Aerospace and Aviation: Ensures fibre optic connectors, cables, and passive components maintain performance and integrity at high altitudes, where atmospheric pressure is significantly reduced.
- Telecommunications Infrastructure: Assesses the reliability of optical components in installations such as mountain top base stations, remote relay sites, or high-rise buildings.
- Industrial and Military Use: Validates device durability in environments subject to variable or harsh atmospheric conditions, contributing to mission-critical reliability.
- Quality Control and Product Development: Provides manufacturers with a methodology for verifying that products meet international performance benchmarks under challenging environmental conditions.
- Laboratory Testing: Enables consistency in the evaluation of fibre optic components, supporting objective comparison, certification, and market access.
By consistently following IEC 61300-2-29:2026, organizations can demonstrate compliance with international quality standards and increase the market acceptance of their fibre optic products.
