oSIST prEN IEC 61300-2-29:2026 is a draft IEC/CENELEC standard in the IEC 61300 series for fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components. It specifies a test method for determining the effect of low air pressure on a fibre optic device, and it is intended to be used together with IEC 61753 performance standards. The document covers the test chamber, optical measurements, test sequence, severity settings, and what has to be recorded in the test report.
What does oSIST prEN IEC 61300-2-29:2026 specify?
oSIST prEN IEC 61300-2-29:2026 specifies how to test a device under reduced air pressure and then return it to normal atmospheric conditions. In practice, this is the method used when a product may be exposed to altitude-related conditions and its optical performance needs to be checked before, during, and after that exposure.
The document is organized into clauses 1 to 8, plus a bibliography and Table 1. Clause 1 gives the scope, clauses 2 and 3 point to the required references and terms, clauses 4 to 7 describe the test principle, apparatus, procedure, and severity, and clause 8 lists the details that must be specified and reported.
What are the key requirements of oSIST prEN IEC 61300-2-29:2026?
Test principle and test object
oSIST prEN IEC 61300-2-29:2026 uses a device under test (DUT) that is placed in a chamber, exposed to a specified low air pressure, and then brought back to normal pressure. That sequence matters because the document is looking for changes caused by pressure reduction, not just a static visual check.
Clause 4 describes the overall flow: introduce the DUT into the chamber, reduce the air pressure to the specified value, maintain it for the required time, and then restore normal pressure.
Apparatus and measurements
oSIST prEN IEC 61300-2-29:2026 requires a test chamber that can hold the pressure condition given in clause 7. The optical measurement equipment must follow IEC 61300-3-4 for attenuation and IEC 61300-3-6 for return loss, and IEC 61300-3-3 is used when intermediate monitoring is required.
This means the test is not only environmental - it also checks whether optical performance changes during exposure.
Preparation, preconditioning, and initial checks
oSIST prEN IEC 61300-2-29:2026 requires the DUT to be prepared according to IEC 61300-1 and mated with suitable test cables. Before the first measurements, the DUT is held for 2 h under standard atmospheric conditions.
Clause 6 also requires initial visual examination and initial optical measurements as specified by the relevant IEC 61753 performance standards, with measurement wavelengths taken from those performance standards.
Low air pressure exposure and recovery
oSIST prEN IEC 61300-2-29:2026 specifies that the chamber pressure is reduced to the value set by the relevant IEC 61753 performance standard, with a pressure-change rate of not more than 15 kPa/min. The pressure is then held for the specified duration, and after the exposure it is restored to normal pressure at the same maximum change rate.
After the test, the DUT stays under standard atmospheric conditions for between 1 h and 2 h before final measurements. This recovery period matters because some effects only appear after the device has stabilized again.
Severity and acceptance-related information
oSIST prEN IEC 61300-2-29:2026 leaves the test air pressure and exposure duration to the relevant IEC 61753 performance standard, while Table 1 gives preferred air pressure and altitude pairings. The pressure tolerance is normally ±5% or ±0.1 kPa, whichever is larger, with a specific tolerance for 84 kPa.
Clause 8 requires the report to identify the DUT, the preconditioning, the initial, intermediate, recovery, and final measurements, the chosen severity, any deviations, and any additional pass/fail criteria.
What terms does oSIST prEN IEC 61300-2-29:2026 define?
- Device under test (DUT) - the fibre optic device being exposed to low air pressure and measured before and after the test.
- Standard atmospheric conditions - the ambient conditions used for preconditioning, recovery, and the reference measurements.
- Attenuation - the loss measured in the optical path, used here to check whether pressure changes affect signal transmission.
- Return loss - the reflected optical power relative to the launched power, used to assess reflective behavior under test.
- Intermediate measurements - measurements made during the low-pressure exposure when the relevant IEC 61753 performance standard requires monitoring.
- Preconditioning - the 2 h period in the chamber before the initial measurement, used to stabilize the DUT.
Who uses oSIST prEN IEC 61300-2-29:2026?
oSIST prEN IEC 61300-2-29:2026 is used by manufacturers, test laboratories, and specifiers of fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components. It is especially relevant to teams that qualify products against IEC 61753 performance standards, compare design variants, or document environmental performance for optical connectors and related devices.
What changed in oSIST prEN IEC 61300-2-29:2026 from the previous edition?
oSIST prEN IEC 61300-2-29:2026 cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1995. The stated technical changes are a revised document structure, added terms and definitions, updated apparatus that adds optical measurement equipment, more detailed procedures, and a reconsidered severity section for air pressure.
Which standards are used with oSIST prEN IEC 61300-2-29:2026?
- IEC 61300-1 - provides general guidance, preparation rules, and the terms and definitions used in this part.
- IEC 61300-3-1 - defines visual examination, used for the initial and final inspection of the DUT.
- IEC 61300-3-3 - defines active monitoring of changes in attenuation and return loss, used for intermediate measurements.
- IEC 61300-3-4 - defines attenuation measurement.
- IEC 61300-3-6 - defines return loss measurement.
- IEC 61753 (all parts) - provides the performance standards that set the required wavelength(s), severity, and final acceptance limits.
What does the oSIST prEN IEC 61300-2-29:2026 document contain?
oSIST prEN IEC 61300-2-29:2026 contains a foreword, clauses 1 to 8, one table, and a bibliography. The core technical content is the test apparatus, the step-by-step procedure, and the severity settings for low air pressure testing.
It also lays out the measurement sequence: preparation, preconditioning, initial visual and optical checks, pressure exposure, optional intermediate monitoring, recovery, and final examination. That makes it useful for test planning, product qualification, and report preparation.
Table 1 links preferred air pressure values to approximate altitude above sea level, so users can select a severity level that matches their intended service condition. The reporting clause then turns the test into a documented record that can be compared across products or test laboratories.
