FprEN IEC 61008-2-1:2026/FprAA:2026 is a CENELEC draft amendment for residual current operated circuit-breakers without integral overcurrent protection (RCCBs) for household and similar uses. It works with IEC 61008-1:2024 and adds requirements, test methods and test sequences for RCCBs classified according to 4.1.1, for use up to 440 V AC and 125 A and mainly for protection against shock hazard. Manufacturers, test laboratories and certification bodies use it to check conformity and prepare certification.
What does FprEN IEC 61008-2-1:2026/FprAA:2026 specify?
FprEN IEC 61008-2-1:2026/FprAA:2026 specifies the extra test and verification rules for RCCBs in the 4.1.1 classification. The amendment is built on IEC 61008-1:2024 and keeps the focus on operating behavior, climatic performance, sample planning and certification use.
The document is organized as a set of targeted changes to the parent standard:
| Part of the document | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Clause 1 | Scope wording for this RCCB class |
| 9.9.1.1 and 9.15.1 | Test circuit/procedure and general test conditions |
| 9.Z1 | Low ambient air temperature verification |
| Figure 2 and Figure Z6 | Test circuit and low-temperature cycle |
| Annex A tables | Test sequences and sample numbers |
| Annex ZA | Normative references and European equivalents |
| Annex ZB | Special national conditions |
The amendment stays within RCCBs without integral overcurrent protection. In practice, it is the document to use when you need the extra requirements for this RCCB class rather than the general RCCB rules alone.
What are the key requirements of FprEN IEC 61008-2-1:2026/FprAA:2026?
Product scope and operating checks
FprEN IEC 61008-2-1:2026/FprAA:2026 applies to RCCBs classified according to IEC 61008-1:2024, 4.1.1, for voltages up to 440 V AC, frequencies of 50 Hz, 60 Hz or 50/60 Hz, and currents up to 125 A. It is intended principally for protection against shock hazard.
Clauses 9.9.1.1 and 9.15.1 are modified, so the test circuit, the test procedure and the general test conditions in the parent standard are not used exactly as printed there. For a lab, this means the base test plan must be read together with these changes before any conformity testing starts.
Low-temperature verification
New Clause 9.Z1 adds a specific check for correct operation at low ambient air temperatures for RCCBs used between -25 °C and +40 °C. Enclosed types are tested in their enclosure, while unenclosed types are mounted in an individual IP55 enclosure and connected as for normal use.
The test cycles the RCCB through stabilization, cooling to -25 °C, holding at that temperature, and returning to +23 °C with humidity restored. The RCCB shall not trip during the cycles, and the measured break time during the cold-point current application shall stay within the limit referenced from prEN IEC 61008-1:2026. After the test, the unit must still be visually acceptable and must be switchable on at -25 °C without residual current.
For type A RCCBs, the amendment also requires a pulsating DC residual-current check after the AC test. That matters because it confirms behavior with both AC and pulsating DC fault currents at low temperature.
Sample planning and test sequences
Annex A is updated for test sequences and sample numbers. Table A.1 adds the new G0 and G1 sequences, and Tables A.2 and A.3 revise the numbers of samples for full and simplified test procedures. Table A.4 is also updated for RCCBs of different classifications according to IEC 61008-1:2024, 4.3.
In practice, this means certification work needs to be planned with the revised sample counts and the new low-temperature sequence in mind. The amendment also notes a case where extra samples may be used if the terminals on one sample are not enough for all terminal tests.
National conditions
Annex ZB records special national conditions. It states that type AC RCCBs are not permitted in Germany, and it preserves United Kingdom notes for Tables A.3 and A.4. For market access, this means the European text still has to be checked against national rules.
What terms does FprEN IEC 61008-2-1:2026/FprAA:2026 define?
- Residual current operated circuit-breaker without integral overcurrent protection (RCCB) - A device that disconnects on residual current and relies on separate overcurrent protection.
- Residual current - The current associated with a fault to earth that the RCCB detects.
- Type A - An RCCB type tested here with AC and pulsating DC residual currents.
- Type S - A selective RCCB type that is checked with the delayed/coordination-related test conditions used in the amendment.
- IP55 - The enclosure degree of protection used for the low-temperature test on unenclosed types.
- Trip-free mechanism - The operating behavior checked by the test circuit in Figure 2, so the device can trip correctly under test conditions.
Who uses FprEN IEC 61008-2-1:2026/FprAA:2026?
FprEN IEC 61008-2-1:2026/FprAA:2026 is used by RCCB manufacturers, test laboratories, certification bodies, and electrical product engineers. Quality managers use it to set up conformity tests and sample plans, while buyers and specifiers use it to confirm the device class, operating limits and national restrictions before procurement or market entry. It is most relevant where household and similar-use electrical protection devices are designed, tested or certified.
What changed in FprEN IEC 61008-2-1:2026/FprAA:2026 from the previous edition?
FprEN IEC 61008-2-1:2026/FprAA:2026 modifies prEN IEC 61008-2-1:2026. The foreword says it keeps only the essential common changes that already existed in EN 61008-2-1:1994 and its amendments and corrigenda.
The stated changes are:
- deletion of the last paragraph of 9.9.1.1
- deletion of the third paragraph of 9.15.1
- addition of Clause 9.Z1 for low ambient air temperature verification
- revision of Figure 2
- addition of Figure Z6 for the low-temperature cycle
- revision of Annex A tables for test sequences and sample numbers
- addition of Annex ZA and Annex ZB
Which standards are used with FprEN IEC 61008-2-1:2026/FprAA:2026?
- IEC 61008-1:2024 - The base standard that supplies the general rules and the main RCCB test framework.
- IEC 61543:2022 - Provides the electromagnetic compatibility requirements for household and similar-use residual current-operated protective devices.
- IEC 62873-2 - Provides vocabulary for residual current operated circuit-breakers and residual current devices.
- prEN IEC 61008-1:2026 - The European publication listed in Annex ZA for IEC 61008-1:2024.
What does the FprEN IEC 61008-2-1:2026/FprAA:2026 document contain?
FprEN IEC 61008-2-1:2026/FprAA:2026 contains revised test circuits, a new low-temperature test cycle, and updated sample-count tables for certification testing. It also provides the amended test sequences in Annex A, so users can plan full or simplified procedures against the correct sample numbers.
Figure 2 gives the test circuit for operating characteristics, trip-free mechanism and low-ambient-temperature behavior. Figure Z6 gives the temperature/humidity cycle used in Clause 9.Z1. Annex ZA maps international references to European publications, and Annex ZB records the national conditions that affect application in specific countries.
