Abstract

IEC 61169-1-3:2026 is applicable to built-in devices (hereinafter referred to as "SPD" - surge protective device) or surge protection of telecommunications and signalling networks against indirect and direct effects of lightning or other transient over voltages. An SPD is intended to protect the electrical apparatus from transient over voltages and to divert surge currents. The SPD built in the coaxial connector can be a gas discharge tube type, a ¼ wavelength short stub type, a flash-off gap type, and a hybrid type thereof. The purpose of these built-in SPD is to protect modern electronic equipment connected to telecommunications and signalling networks with nominal system voltages up to 1 000 V (RMS) AC and 1 500 V DC.

EN IEC 61169-1-3:2026 is the CENELEC European Standard for radio-frequency connectors with built-in surge protective devices (SPD). It specifies electrical test methods, performance requirements and testing methods for coaxial-connector SPDs used on telecommunications and signalling networks to protect equipment from lightning-related and other transient overvoltages. It is written for manufacturers, test laboratories, and anyone specifying or verifying these connectors in practice.

What does EN IEC 61169-1-3:2026 specify?

EN IEC 61169-1-3:2026 applies to built-in SPD in coaxial connectors for surge protection of telecommunications and signalling networks. The document covers devices intended to protect electrical apparatus from transient overvoltages and divert surge currents, including gas discharge tube, ¼ wavelength short stub, flash-off gap, and hybrid types.

The scope places these built-in SPD in modern electronic equipment connected to networks with nominal system voltages up to 1 000 V AC and 1 500 V DC. In practice, that tells the reader which protection devices and network voltages are in scope for design, test and specification.

The document is organized into Clauses 1 to 7, followed by Annexes A, B and C for example measurement setups and Annex ZA for European normative references.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex AExample equipment and layouts for DC sparkover voltage testing
Annex BExample equipment and layouts for impulse sparkover voltage testing
Annex CExample equipment and layouts for impulse durability testing

What are the key requirements of EN IEC 61169-1-3:2026?

EN IEC 61169-1-3:2026 sets minimum electrical and test requirements for SPD built into coaxial connectors, and it links those requirements to specific test methods. The practical focus is on how the connector behaves before surge testing, during surge testing, and after surge testing.

Service and test conditions

Clause 4 defines the service environment and how tests are to be carried out. The standard distinguishes normal and abnormal service conditions, and it asks the manufacturer to consider abnormal conditions where they matter to the design or application.

For testing, Clause 4 allows a temperature of 23 °C ± 2 °C with controlled humidity only when the device technology is known to be insensitive to temperature for the characteristic under test. Otherwise, testing is done at the extreme temperatures relevant to the intended application, with gradual heating or cooling and enough time for thermal equilibrium. In practice, this means the test lab must choose the right climate condition for the device technology, not just a convenient room condition.

Clause 4 also says the SPD shall be tested with the same connections or terminations used in field installation. If a base or connector is part of the intended use, it is part of the test setup too. That matters because the result has to reflect real installation performance, not just the bare device.

Electrical performance before and after surge testing

Clause 5 treats all electrical requirements as minimum requirements, while allowing users to specify different values where needed. The initial sparkover voltage between connector terminals must meet the limits referenced from IEC 61643-311, and the specified return loss, insertion loss and insulation resistance are taken from the detail specification.

Clause 5 also requires impulse durability testing with a specified surge peak current applied a specified number of times. After that loading, the current-limiting element must still meet the detail specification. In practice, this checks that the SPD still performs its protective function after repeated surge stress.

After the impulse durability test, Clause 5 requires discharge inception voltage, return loss (VSWR), insertion loss and insulation resistance to remain within the ranges set for the connector. This is the key pass-fail point for users who need both surge protection and continued RF performance.

Test and measurement methods

Clause 6 gives the test methods for DC sparkover voltage, impulse sparkover voltage, impulse durability, return loss (VSWR), insertion loss and insulation resistance. For the sparkover tests, the GDT specimen is left in a dark place for at least 15 min before voltage is applied and the discharge inception voltage is measured using the circuits shown in the standard.

Clause 6 requires the impulse durability test to use the Figure 5 circuit arrangement, with further details referenced to IEC 61643-21:2025. It also states that return loss (VSWR) shall follow IEC 61169-1:2013, insertion loss shall follow IEC 61169-1-2, and insulation resistance shall follow IEC 61169-1:2013.

The measurement equipment must be suitable for the method used, and oscilloscopes must comply with IEC 61083-1. For users, this means the results depend not only on the specimen but also on the correctness of the test instrumentation and setup.

What has to be stated in the detail specification

Clause 7 requires the relevant specification to state the measurement range of sparkover voltage and the impulse durability levels. It also has to state any test fixture requirement and any difference from the test methods in this document.

That clause is important for procurement and quality control because it is where product-specific values, fixtures and deviations are fixed. Without those details, different suppliers could be testing to different assumptions.

What terms does EN IEC 61169-1-3:2026 define?

  • Surge protective device (SPD) - A device that limits voltage at a designated port so the protected circuit sees less surge-induced overvoltage.
  • Gas discharge tube (GDT) - A voltage-switching protective element used in some coaxial SPD designs.
  • ¼ wavelength short stub - A coaxial protection design that uses a short stub of specific length to provide surge protection.
  • Return loss (VSWR) - The RF matching performance metric used here to show how much signal is reflected by the connector assembly.
  • Insertion loss - The loss introduced by the connector path, which matters for signal attenuation in the protected line.
  • Insulation resistance - The resistance between relevant terminals, used to confirm electrical isolation after manufacture and after surge stress.
  • Impulse durability - The ability of the SPD to withstand a specified number of surge current impulses of specified waveform.

Who uses EN IEC 61169-1-3:2026?

EN IEC 61169-1-3:2026 is used by manufacturers of radio-frequency connectors with built-in SPD, especially coaxial connector assemblies for telecommunications and signalling networks. Test laboratories use it to set up DC sparkover, impulse sparkover and impulse durability testing in a repeatable way.

It is also relevant to design engineers, quality managers and buyers who need to define the required surge protection level, the RF performance limits, and the test fixture to be used. In practice, it supports product specification, incoming verification, type testing and supplier comparison for surge-protected coaxial connectors.
