Overview
EN IEC 61169-1-9:2025 is a European Standard developed by CLC that specifies the mechanical test methods for safety wire hole pull-out in radio-frequency (RF) connectors. This standard focuses on verifying the mechanical robustness of safety wire holes in RF connectors, ensuring that they can endure specified pulling forces without damage or failure. Applicable to connectors featuring safety wire holes, this standard is part 1-9 of the IEC 61169 series, which governs RF connectors and their specifications.
The document was approved by CENELEC in June 2025 and aims to harmonize testing procedures across the industry for quality assurance, safety, and performance consistency of RF connectors used in various electrotechnical applications.
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability
Defines test methods exclusively for connectors with safety wire holes, as part of overall RF connector evaluation.Test Equipment
Requires use of a pulling testing machine or device capable of applying controlled forces for the pull-out tests.Test Conditions
Testing is performed under ambient room conditions or conditions specified by relevant product specifications.Test Procedure
- Secure the device under test (DUT) in the testing fixture.
- Loop a safety wire through the safety wire hole, secure it, and attach to the testing machine.
- Apply a pulling force of 67 Newtons (N) for 30 seconds parallel to the connector axis.
- Repeat with pulling force perpendicular to the connector axis.
- Test all safety wire holes similarly.
- Inspect the safety wire hole for breakage or tearing post-test.
- Replace the safety wire if it breaks during testing and repeat.
Specification Information
The standard requires specifications to detail any deviations from the default force (67 N), duration (30 s), or method.Test Reporting
Reports must document test conditions, force applied, duration, equipment used, sample details, results, operator, and date.Annex on Safety Wire Details
Provides guidance on the typical location of safety wire holes, selection of corrosion-resistant steel safety wires (0.35 mm or 0.5 mm diameter), and installation procedures. Recommended wire sizes are aligned with common connector types such as SMA, TNC, N, SC, and 7-16 models.
Applications
This standard is critical for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and quality assurance teams involved in the production and evaluation of RF connectors with safety wire holes. The mechanical integrity of these holes is important for:
- Safety Assurance: Ensures safety wires function correctly to prevent loosening or accidental disconnection.
- Quality Control: Provides standardized test methods for repeatable and reliable connector performance assessments.
- Military and Aerospace: Where connector reliability under mechanical stress is vital.
- Telecommunications and Broadcast: Maintains secure RF connections in critical infrastructure.
- Industrial and Scientific Equipment: Used for durable RF connectors in harsh environments.
By implementing EN IEC 61169-1-9:2025, organizations can certify that RF connectors meet international quality standards and consistency requirements, reducing field failures and enhancing safety.
