Overview

EN 60335-2-30:2009/A11:2012 is a critical European safety standard developed by CLC/TC 61 that specifies particular requirements for the safety of room heaters designed for household and similar electrical appliances. This amendment A11 updates the 2009 edition of EN 60335-2-30 to ensure enhanced protection and compliance with the latest safety provisions. The standard covers electric room heaters with a rated voltage up to 250 V for single-phase devices and up to 480 V for others.

This standard applies extensively to appliances such as convector heaters, fan heaters, panel heaters, radiant heaters, heaters for greenhouses, liquid-filled radiators, and ceiling-mounted heat lamp appliances. It aims to mitigate risks of electrical shock, fire, burns, and mechanical hazards linked with domestic electric room heaters.

Key Topics

  • Scope of Application
The standard targets household and similar environments including dwellings, gardens, farms, shops, hotels, and other residential or commercial premises where laymen use electrical heaters. It explicitly excludes industrial appliances, heating components in air conditioners, sauna heaters, storage heaters, and heating elements meant for specialized use or harsh environments.

  • Safety Requirements
EN 60335-2-30/A11 includes detailed provisions on temperature limits for accessible surfaces of heaters, ensuring surfaces such as air outlet grilles and external parts remain within safe temperature rises to avoid burns, especially to children and vulnerable people.

  • Markings and User Instructions
Clear guidance is mandated about child safety-children under 3 should be continuously supervised around heaters, while children aged 3 to 8 require supervision or instruction. The product must caution that some parts may become hot and cause burns.

  • Construction and Stability
The amendment sets tight limits on accessible openings to prevent access to live or moving parts, especially for portable and low-height heaters. The free length of supply cords for plug-in heaters is regulated to ensure safety and usability, with minimum and maximum lengths specified.

  • Temperature Measurement and Testing
The document details precise measurement methods and temperature rise limits for different materials and components, specifying where measurements should or should not be taken based on typical operating positions and manufacturer instructions.

Applications

  • Residential Heating Solutions
This standard is paramount for manufacturers producing safe and reliable room heaters for domestic use. Appliances that meet EN 60335-2-30/A11 ensure consumer safety, reduce fire hazards, and comply with European regulatory frameworks.

  • Commercial and Public Premises
Shops, hotels, guesthouses, and similar establishments benefit from heaters conforming to this standard. It ensures that heaters used by the general public or non-expert users meet safety criteria applicable beyond private dwellings.

  • Product Development and Certification
Manufacturers seeking CE marking for room heaters in Europe utilize this standard to align design, testing, and documentation with regulatory expectations. Compliance supports market access and consumer confidence.

  • Maintenance and User Safety Guidance
The inclusion of child safety instructions and warnings about hot surfaces fosters safer usage and maintenance of room heaters in households where children and vulnerable individuals are present.
