Overview
EN 60870-5-104:2006/A1:2016 is a European standard developed by CENELEC (CLC) for telecontrol equipment and systems. It addresses bit-serial data transmission across communication networks, focusing on the requirements for network access using standard transport profiles as specified in IEC 60870-5-101. This standard enables reliable monitoring and control of geographically widespread industrial processes and ensures interoperability between compatible telecontrol devices and systems.
The 2016 amendment (A1) enhances compliance, clarifies technical behaviors, and ensures the standard remains up to date to meet evolving needs in telecontrol and remote monitoring across the energy and utility sectors.
Key Topics
- Transmission Protocols: Defines data transmission procedures for telecontrol using standardized network transport services, building on existing IEC 60870-5-101 protocols.
- Network Access: Specifies mechanisms for remote devices to connect over standard network profiles, supporting integration in modern IP-based environments.
- Interoperability: Lays out compatibility requirements for communications between diverse telecontrol equipment, simplifying integration and system expansion.
- Data Integrity and Confirmation: Introduces procedures for acknowledgement, buffering, and message sequencing to protect against data loss or duplication.
- ASDU Handling: Provides guidance for mirrored Application Service Data Units (ASDUs) and their correct use in control and monitor directions to ensure proper transmission acknowledgements.
- Station Initialization: Details the initialization sequences for both controlling and controlled stations, addressing variations due to operating systems or TCP/IP stack implementations.
- Application Layer Specifications: Outlines the structure for type identifiers and causes of transmission at the application layer, ensuring standardized communication semantics.
Applications
EN 60870-5-104:2006/A1:2016 is widely used in sectors that require secure and reliable telecontrol over communications networks, particularly where equipment and processes are distributed over large distances. Key applications include:
- Electric Power Systems: Remote monitoring and control of substations and distribution lines in smart grids and traditional power networks.
- Water Management: Supervisory systems managing water treatment plants, pumping stations, and pipeline monitoring.
- Gas and Oil Industries: Telemetry and control for pipelines, compressor stations, and distributed field equipment.
- Railway and Transport Operations: Monitoring and managing signaling, power, and control systems across extensive transportation networks.
- Industrial Automation: Integrating remote control systems within process automation environments where standardized communication is required.
These applications benefit from the standard’s strong focus on interoperability, reliability, and compatibility with both legacy and modern communication networks, including migration to TCP/IP-based solutions.
Related Standards
Adhering to EN 60870-5-104:2006/A1:2016 ensures compatibility with a wider portfolio of international standards in telecontrol and industrial automation, including:
- IEC 60870-5-101: Defines basic telecontrol transmission protocols forming the foundation for 5-104.
- IEC 60870-5-102/103: Specialized protocols for metering and protection equipment.
- IEC 61850: Advanced substation automation standards, often used together with IEC 60870 frameworks for wider utility integration.
- ISO/IEC 7498: OSI model for reference in network and application layer design and implementation.
- IEC 60870-6 (TASE.2): Profiles for control center data exchange.
Employing this standard streamlines remote monitoring, control, and supervisory data exchange in critical infrastructures, supporting future-proof and interoperable system deployments.
