Overview

EN 50288-10-1:2012 is a CENELEC sectional specification for screened (shielded) multi-element metallic cables characterized from 1 MHz up to 500 MHz, intended for use in horizontal floor and building backbone wiring within Information Technology generic-cabling systems. It defines construction principles, electrical and mechanical performance, transmission and environmental requirements, and required test methods. This document is to be read together with EN 50288-1 (generic specification).

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and purpose: Cables for IT horizontal and backbone installations; not intended for connection to low-impedance mains power sources.

  • Insulation and sheath: Materials must comply with the appropriate parts of the EN 50290-2 series or relevant IEC standards.
  • Cabling elements: Elements are specified as pairs or quads; color coding follows IEC/EN references.
  • Screening (shielding):
    • Cable core screening and element screening described; DC continuity and minimum shielding performance required.
    • Minimum braid coverage: 60% (braid only) for mechanical purposes; 30% when foil + braid constructions are used (as defined in EN 50290-2-1).
  • Electrical performance (examples):
    • Conductor loop resistance ≤ 19 Ω/100 m
    • Conductor resistance unbalance ≤ 2%
    • Dielectric strength examples: 1.0 kV d.c. or 0.7 kV a.c. for 1 min; 2.5 kV d.c. or 1.7 kV a.c. for 2 s (conductor/conductor and conductor/screen)
    • Insulation resistance ≥ 5 000 MΩ·km
  • Mechanical and environmental testing: Tensile, elongation, crush, impact, bending, abrasion, temperature cycling and other tests are prescribed via referenced EN/IEC test method standards (EN 50289 series, EN 50290, IEC 60189-2).
  • Fire performance: Fire tests are included and referenced in the document.
