9.3 Cables
Replace the existing Subclause 9.3.1 with the following new Subclause:
9.3.1 General
Cables with a tensile strength for the inner or outer sheaths of less than 8,5 MPa shall not be
used.
NOTE: Cables with tensile strength less than 8,5 MPa are sometimes known as “easy tear” cables”.
16.2.2 Cables
Replace the existing first paragraph of Subclause 16.2.2.1 with the following new paragraph:
16.2.2.1 General
Only cables with insulation capable of withstanding a dielectric test of twice the voltage of the
intrinsically safe circuit or 500 V r.m.s. (750 V d.c.), whichever is the greater, shall be used in
intrinsically safe circuits.
16.2.4.3 Intrinsically safe circuits with only one source of power
Replace the existing fifth paragraph of Subclause 16.2.4.3 with the following new paragraph:

IEC 2016
Where both the total inductance and capacitance of all connected apparatus excluding the
cable is greater than 1 % of L and C of the source of power respectively, then the
o o
acceptable values for L and C shall be halved and the allowable cable inductance and
o o
capacitance adjusted accordingly. However, the maximum external capacitance C derived by
o
using this rule shall be limited to a maximum value of 1 μF for Group IIB and 600 nF for Group
IIC. Further information is provided in IEC 60079-25.
NOTE 1 There is no further limitation for Group IIA.
NOTE 2 All connected apparatus includes any simple apparatus which may not have valu
