FOREWORD
1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Their preparation is
entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may
participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC collaborates closely with the International
Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the
two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an
international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation
from all interested National Committees.

This sixth edition cancels and replaces the fifth edition published in 2000. It constitutes a
technical revision.

This part 2 supplements or modifies the corresponding clauses in IEC 60335-1, so as to
convert that publication into the IEC standard: Safety requirements for electric washing

INTRODUCTION
It has been assumed in the drafting of this International Standard that the execution of its

provisions is entrusted to appropriately qualified and experienced persons.

This standard recognizes the internationally accepted level of protection against hazards such

as electrical, mechanical, thermal, fire and radiation of appliances when operated as in

normal use taking into account the manufacturer's instructions. It also covers abnormal

situations that can be expected in practice.

This standard takes into account the requirements of IEC 60364 as far as possible so that

there is compatibility with the wiring rules when the appliance is connected to the supply
mains. However, national wiring rules may differ.
If an appliance within the scope of this standard also incorporates functions that are covered
by another part 2 of IEC 60335, the relevant part 2 is applied to each function separately, as
far as is reasonable. If applicable, the influence of one function on the other is taken into
account.
This standard is a product family standard dealing with the safety of appliances and takes
precedence over horizontal and generic standards covering the same subject.
An appliance that complies with the text of this standard will not necessarily be considered to
comply with the safety principles of the standard if, when examined and tested, it is found to
have other features that impair the level of safety covered by these requirements.
An appliance employing materials or having forms of construction differing from those detailed
in the requirements of this standard may be examined and tested according to the intent of
the requirements and, if found to be substantially equivalent, may be considered to comply
with the standard.

1 Scope
This clause of Part 1 is replaced by the following.

This International Standard deals with the safety of electric washing machines for household
and similar use, that are intended for washing clothes and textiles, their rated voltage being
not more than 250 V for single-phase appliances and 480 V for other appliances.
NOTE 101 Washing machines also supplied with other forms of energy are within the scope of this standard.
Appliances not intended for normal household use but which nevertheless may be a source of
danger to the public, such as appliances intended to be used by laymen in shops, in light
industry and on farms, are within the scope of this standard.
NOTE 102 Examples of such appliances are washing machines for communal use in blocks of flats or in
launderettes.
As far as is practicable, this standard deals with the common hazards presented by
appliances that are encountered by all persons in and around the home. However, in general,
it does not take into account
– the use of appliances by young children or infirm persons without supervision;
– playing with the appliance by young children.
NOTE 103 Attention is drawn to the fact that
– for appliances intended to be used in vehicles or on board ships or aircraft, additional requirements may be
necessary;
– in many countries additional requirements are specified by the national health authorities, the national
authorities responsible for the protection of labour, the national water supply authorities and similar
authorities.
NOTE 104 This standard does not apply to
– appliances intended exclusively for industrial purposes;
– appliances intended to be used in locations where special conditions prevail, such as the presence of a
corrosive or explosive atmosphere (dust, vapour or gas).

3.1.9 Replacement:
normal operation
operation of the appliance under the following conditions

The appliance is filled with textile material having a mass in the dry condition equal to the

maximum mass stated in the instructions, and with the maximum quantity of water for which it
is constructed. However, if the power input or current is higher when only 50 % of the textile

material is used, the appliance is operated with this load instead.

The temperature of the water is

– 65 °C ± 5 °C for appliances without heating elements;

– 15 °C ± 5 °C for other appliances.

If the appliance does not incorporate a programmer, the water is heated to 90 °C ± 5 °C or as
high as the construction will allow if lower, before starting the first washing period.
The textile material consists of pre-washed double-hemmed cotton sheets having dimensions
approximately 70 cm × 70 cm and a specific mass between 140 g/m² and 175 g/m² in the dry
condition.
NOTE 101 In washing machines of the continuously rotating impeller type, if the textile material does not move
properly during operation, its quantity is reduced until the maximum power input of the motor is attained.
4 General requirement
This clause of Part 1 is applicable.
5 General conditions for the tests
This clause of Part 1 is applicable except as follows.
5.3 Addition:
The test of 15.101 is carried out before the test of 15.3.
5.7 Addition:
NOTE 101 Doubt is considered to exist if the temperature of the water is within 6 K of the boiling point and the
difference between the temperature rise of the relevant part and the limit specified does not exceed 25 K minus the
room temperature.
6 Classification
This clause of Part 1 is applicable except as follows.

6.1 Modification:
Appliances shall be of class I, class II or class III.

6.2 Addition:
Appliances shall be at least IPX4.

7 Marking and instructions
This clause of Part 1 is applicable except as follows.

7.1 Addition:
Appliances without automatic water level control shall be marked with the maximum water
level.
The safety release mechanism of power-driven wringers shall be marked to indicate its
method of operation, unless its operating means has to be continuously actuated by the user.
NOTE 101 This marking may be near the mechanism.
7.6 Addition:

If the off position is only indicated by letters, the word "off" shall be used.
7.12 Addition:
The instructions shall specify the maximum mass of dry cloth in kilograms to be used in the
appliance.
The instructions for washing machines incorporating a power-driven wringer shall draw
attention to the potential hazards involved when operating the wringer and shall state that
– the wringer must be disengaged or switched off when not in use;
– the appliance must not be operated by children.

If symbol 5036 of IEC 60417-1 is used, its meaning shall be explained.
7.12.1 Addition:
The installation instructions shall state
– that the appliance is to be connected to the water mains using new hose-sets and that old
hose-sets should not be reused;
NOTE 101 This instruction is not required if the hoses are permanently attached to the appliance.
– the maximum permissible inlet water pressure, in megapascals, for appliances intended to
be connected to the water mains;
– the minimum permissible inlet water pressure, in megapascals, if this is necessary for the
correct operation of the appliance;
– for washing machines with ventilation openings in the base, that a carpet must not
obstruct the openings.

7.14 Addition:
The height of symbol 5036 of IEC 60417-1 shall be at least 5 mm.

Compliance is checked by measurement.

7.101 The enclosure of magnetic valves, and similar components incorporated in external

hoses for direct connection to the water mains, shall be marked with symbol 5036 of

IEC 60417 if their working voltage exceeds extra-low voltage.

NOTE This symbol is a warnng sign and the rules of ISO 3864 apply.

Compliance is checked by inspection.
8 Protection against access to live parts
This clause of Part 1 is applicable.
9 Starting of motor-operated appliances
This clause of Part 1 is not applicable.
10 Power input and current
This clause of Part 1 is applicable except as follows.
10.1 Addition:

11.7 Replacement:
Appliances incorporating a programmer are operated for three cycles with the programme that
results in highest temperature rises, with a rest period of 4 min between cycles.
Other appliances are operated for three cycles, with a rest period of 4 min between cycles.
Each cycle consists of the following operations:
– for appliances without means for water washing;
extraction,
– for appliances having a single drum for washing followed by water extraction;

– for appliances having separate drums for washing and water extraction separated by

1) La CEI (Commission Électrotechnique Internationale) est une organisation mondiale de normalisation
composée de l'ensemble des comités électrotechniques nationaux (Comités nationaux de la CEI). La CEI a
pour objet de favoriser la coopération internationale pour toutes les questions de normalisation dans les
domaines de l'électricité et de l'électronique. A cet effet, la CEI, entre autres activités, publie des Normes
internationales. Leur élaboration est confiée à des comités d'études, aux travaux desquels tout Comité national

FOREWORD
1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Their preparation is
entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may
participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC collaborates closely with the International
Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the
two organizations.

Il a été considéré en établissant la présente Norme internationale que l'exécution de

ses dispositions était confiée à des personnes expérimentées et ayant une qualification

appropriée.
Cette norme reconnaît le niveau de protection internationalement accepté contre les risques

électriques, mécaniques, thermiques, liés au feu et au rayonnement des appareils, lorsqu'ils

fonctionnent comme en usage normal en tenant compte des instructions du fabricant. Elle

couvre également les situations anormales auxquelles on peut s'attendre dans la pratique.

Cette norme tient compte autant que possible des prescriptions de la CEI 60364, de façon à
rester compatible avec les règles d'installation quand l’appareil est raccordé au réseau
d’alimentation. Cependant, des règles nationales d'installation peuvent être différentes.
Si un appareil compris dans le domaine d’application de cette norme comporte également des
fonctions qui sont couvertes par une autre partie 2 de la CEI 60335, la partie 2
correspondante est appliquée à chaque fonction séparément, dans la limite du raisonnable. Si
cela est applicable, on tient compte de l’influence d’une fonction sur les autres fonctions.
Cette norme est une norme de famille de produits traitant de la sécurité d’appareils et a
préséance sur les normes horizontales et génériques couvrant le même sujet.
Un appareil conforme au texte de la présente norme ne sera pas nécessairement jugé
conforme aux principes de sécurité de la norme si, lorsqu'il est examiné et soumis aux essais,
il apparaît qu'il présente d'autres caractéristiques qui compromettent le niveau de sécurité

INTRODUCTION
It has been assumed in the drafting of this International Standard that the execution of its

provisions is entrusted to appropriately qualified and experienced persons.

This standard recognizes the internationally accepted level of protection against hazards such

as electrical, mechanical, thermal, fire and radiation of appliances when operated as in

normal use taking into account the manufacturer's instructions. It also covers abnormal

situations that can be expected in practice.

This standard takes into account the requirements of IEC 60364 as far as possible so that

there is compatibility with the wiring rules when the appliance is connected to the supply
mains. However, national wiring rules may differ.
If an appliance within the scope of this standard also incorporates functions that are covered
by another part 2 of IEC 60335, the relevant part 2 is applied to each function separately, as
far as is reasonable. If applicable, the influence of one function on the other is taken into
account.
This standard is a product family standard dealing with the safety of appliances and takes
precedence over horizontal and generic standards covering the same subject.
An appliance that complies with the text of this standard will not necessarily be considered to
comply with the safety principles of the standard if, when examined and tested, it is found to
have other features that impair the level of safety covered by these requirements.
An appliance employing materials or having forms of construction differing from those detailed
in the requirements of this standard may be examined and tested according to the intent of
the requirements and, if found to be substantially equivalent, may be considered to comply
with the standard.

1 Domaine d'application

La présente norme internationale traite de la sécurité des machines à laver le linge
électriques pour usages domestiques et analogues destinées à laver des vêtements et des
textiles, dont la tension assignée n'est pas supérieure à 250 V pour les appareils
monophasés et à 480 V pour les autres appareils.
NOTE 101 Les machines à laver qui sont également alimentées avec d'autres formes d'énergie entrent aussi
dans le domaine d'application de la présente norme.
Les appareils qui ne sont pas destinés à un usage domestique normal mais qui peuvent
néanmoins constituer une source de danger pour le public, tels les appareils destinés à être
utilisés par des utilisateurs non avertis dans des magasins, chez des artisans et dans les
fermes, sont compris dans le domaine d'application de la présente norme.
NOTE 102 Comme exemples de tels appareils, on peut citer les machines à laver mises à la disposition
commune des utilisateurs dans des immeubles d'habitation ou dans les laveries automatiques.
Dans la mesure du possible, la présente norme traite des risques ordinaires présentés par les
appareils qui sont encourus par tous les individus à l'intérieur et autour de l'habitation.
Cependant, cette norme ne tient pas compte en général
– de l'utilisation des appareils par de jeunes enfants ou par des personnes handicapées
sans surveillance;
– de l’emploi de l’appareil comme jouet par de jeunes enfants.

1 Scope
This clause of Part 1 is replaced by the following.

This International Standard deals with the safety of electric washing machines for household
and similar use, that are intended for washing clothes and textiles, their rated voltage being
not more than 250 V for single-phase appliances and 480 V for other appliances.
NOTE 101 Washing machines also supplied with other forms of energy are within the scope of this standard.
Appliances not intended for normal household use but which nevertheless may be a source of
danger to the public, such as appliances intended to be used by laymen in shops, in light
industry and on farms, are within the scope of this standard.
NOTE 102 Examples of such appliances are washing machines for communal use in blocks of flats or in
launderettes.
As far as is practicable, this standard deals with the common hazards presented by
appliances that are encountered by all persons in and around the home. However, in general,
it does not take into account
– the use of appliances by young children or infirm persons without supervision;
– playing with the appliance by young children.
NOTE 103 Attention is drawn to the fact that
– for appliances intended to be used in vehicles or on board ships or aircraft, additional requirements may be
necessary;
– in many countries additional requirements are specified by the national health authorities, the national
authorities responsible for the protection of labour, the national water supply authorities and similar
authorities.
NOTE 104 This standard does not apply to
– appliances intended exclusively for industrial purposes;
– appliances intended to be used in locations where special conditions prevail, such as the presence of a
corrosive or explosive atmosphere (dust, vapour or gas).

3.1.9 Remplacement:

– 15 °C ± 5 °C pour les autres appareils.
Si l'appareil ne comporte pas de programmateur, l'eau est chauffée jusqu'à 90 °C ± 5 °C ou
jusqu'à la valeur la plus élevée autorisée par sa construction si celle-ci est inférieure, avant
de commencer la première période de lavage.
Le linge est constitué de pièces de coton décati à double ourlet, de dimensions

approximatives 70 cm × 70 cm et de masse spécifique comprise entre 140 g/m et 175 g/m à
sec.
NOTE 101 Si, dans les machines à laver à pulsateur à rotation continue, le linge n'est pas agité correctement
pendant le fonctionnement, la quantité de linge est réduite jusqu'à obtention de la puissance maximale du moteur.
4 Prescriptions générales
L’article de la Partie 1 est applicable.
5 Conditions générales d’essais
L’article de la Partie 1 est applicable avec les exceptions suivantes.
5.3 Addition:
L’essai de 15.101 est réalisé avant celui de 15.3.
5.7 Addition:
NOTE 101 On considère qu'il y a un doute si la température de l'eau se situe dans une plage de 6 K en plus ou en
moins par rapport au point d'ébullition et que la différence entre l'échauffement de cette partie et la limite spécifiée
ne dépasse pas 25 K moins la température ambiante.
6 Classification

3.1.9 Replacement:
normal operation
operation of the appliance under the following conditions

The appliance is filled with textile material having a mass in the dry condition equal to the

maximum mass stated in the instructions, and with the maximum quantity of water for which it

is constructed. However, if the power input or current is higher when only 50 % of the textile
material is used, the appliance is operated with this load instead.
The temperature of the water is
– 65 °C ± 5 °C for appliances without heating elements;
– 15 °C ± 5 °C for other appliances.
If the appliance does not incorporate a programmer, the water is heated to 90 °C ± 5 °C or as
high as the construction will allow if lower, before starting the first washing period.
The textile material consists of pre-washed double-hemmed cotton sheets having dimensions
approximately 70 cm × 70 cm and a specific mass between 140 g/m² and 175 g/m² in the dry
condition.
NOTE 101 In washing machines of the continuously rotating impeller type, if the textile material does not move

The safety release mechanism of power-driven wringers shall be marked to indicate its
method of operation, unless its operating means has to be continuously actuated by the user.

1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising

INTRODUCTION
Il a été considéré en établissant la présente Norme internationale que l'exécution de

ses dispositions était confiée à des personnes expérimentées et ayant une qualification

appropriée.
Cette norme reconnaît le niveau de protection internationalement accepté contre les risques

électriques, mécaniques, thermiques, liés au feu et au rayonnement des appareils, lorsqu'ils

fonctionnent comme en usage normal en tenant compte des instructions du fabricant. Elle

couvre également les situations anormales auxquelles on peut s'attendre dans la pratique et

prend en considération les phénomènes électromagnétiques qui peuvent affecter le

fonctionnement en toute sécurité des appareils.
Cette norme tient compte autant que possible des prescriptions de la CEI 60364, de façon à
rester compatible avec les règles d'installation quand l’appareil est raccordé au réseau
d’alimentation. Cependant, des règles nationales d'installation peuvent être différentes.
Si un appareil compris dans le domaine d’application de cette norme comporte également des
fonctions qui sont couvertes par une autre partie 2 de la CEI 60335, la partie 2
correspondante est appliquée à chaque fonction séparément, dans la limite du raisonnable. Si
cela est applicable, on tient compte de l’influence d’une fonction sur les autres fonctions.
Cette norme est une norme de famille de produits traitant de la sécurité d’appareils et a
préséance sur les normes horizontales et génériques couvrant le même sujet.
Un appareil conforme au texte de la présente norme ne sera pas nécessairement jugé
conforme aux principes de sécurité de la norme si, lorsqu'il est examiné et soumis aux essais,
il apparaît qu'il présente d'autres caractéristiques qui compromettent le niveau de sécurité

INTRODUCTION
It has been assumed in the drafting of this International Standard that the execution of its

provisions is entrusted to appropriately qualified and experienced persons.

This standard recognizes the internationally accepted level of protection against hazards such

as electrical, mechanical, thermal, fire and radiation of appliances when operated as in

normal use taking into account the manufacturer's instructions. It also covers abnormal

situations that can be expected in practice and takes into account the way in which

electromagnetic phenomena can affect the safe operation of appliances.

This standard takes into account the requirements of IEC 60364 as far as possible so that
there is compatibility with the wiring rules when the appliance is connected to the supply
mains. However, national wiring rules may differ.
If an appliance within the scope of this standard also incorporates functions that are covered
by another part 2 of IEC 60335, the relevant part 2 is applied to each function separately, as
far as is reasonable. If applicable, the influence of one function on the other is taken into
account.
This standard is a product family standard dealing with the safety of appliances and takes
precedence over horizontal and generic standards covering the same subject.
An appliance that complies with the text of this standard will not necessarily be considered to
comply with the safety principles of the standard if, when examined and tested, it is found to
have other features that impair the level of safety covered by these requirements.
An appliance employing materials or having forms of construction differing from those detailed
in the requirements of this standard may be examined and tested according to the intent of
the requirements and, if found to be substantially equivalent, may be considered to comply
with the standard.

La présente norme internationale traite de la sécurité des machines à laver le linge
électriques pour usages domestiques et analogues destinées à laver des vêtements et des
textiles, dont la tension assignée n'est pas supérieure à 250 V pour les appareils
monophasés et à 480 V pour les autres appareils.
NOTE 101 Les machines à laver qui sont également alimentées avec d'autres formes d'énergie entrent aussi
dans le domaine d'application de la présente norme.
Les appareils qui ne sont pas destinés à un usage domestique normal mais qui peuvent
néanmoins constituer une source de danger pour le public, tels les appareils destinés à être
utilisés par des utilisateurs non avertis dans des magasins, chez des artisans et dans les
fermes, sont compris dans le domaine d'application de la présente norme.
NOTE 102 Comme exemples de tels appareils, on peut citer les machines à laver mises à la disposition
commune des utilisateurs dans des immeubles d'habitation ou dans les laveries automatiques.
Dans la mesure du possible, la présente norme traite des risques ordinaires présentés par les
appareils qui sont encourus par tous les individus à l'intérieur et autour de l'habitation.
Cependant, cette norme ne tient pas compte en général
– de l'utilisation des appareils par de jeunes enfants ou par des personnes handicapées
sans surveillance;
– de l’emploi de l’appareil comme jouet par de jeunes enfants.

1 Scope
This clause of Part 1 is replaced by the following.

This International Standard deals with the safety of electric washing machines for household
and similar use, that are intended for washing clothes and textiles, their rated voltage being
not more than 250 V for single-phase appliances and 480 V for other appliances.
NOTE 101 Washing machines also supplied with other forms of energy are within the scope of this standard.
Appliances not intended for normal household use but which nevertheless may be a source of
danger to the public, such as appliances intended to be used by laymen in shops, in light
industry and on farms, are within the scope of this standard.
NOTE 102 Examples of such appliances are washing machines for communal use in blocks of flats or in
launderettes.
As far as is practicable, this standard deals with the common hazards presented by
appliances that are encountered by all persons in and around the home. However, in general,
it does not take into account
– the use of appliances by young children or infirm persons without supervision;
– playing with the appliance by young children.
NOTE 103 Attention is drawn to the fact that
– for appliances intended to be used in vehicles or on board ships or aircraft, additional requirements may be
necessary;
– in many countries additional requirements are specified by the national health authorities, the national
authorities responsible for the protection of labour, the national water supply authorities and similar
authorities.
– for appliances having a separate spin container for water extraction, IEC 60335-2-4 is also applicable;
– for appliance having a drying function, IEC 60335-2-11 is also applicable.
NOTE 104 This standard does not apply to

seulement 50 % du linge, l'appareil est mis en fonctionnement avec cette dernière charge à la
place de celle indiquée plus haut.
La température de l'eau est de:

– 15 °C ± 5 °C pour les autres appareils.
Si l'appareil ne comporte pas de programmateur, l'eau est chauffée jusqu'à 90 °C ± 5 °C ou
jusqu'à la valeur la plus élevée autorisée par sa construction si celle-ci est inférieure, avant
de commencer la première période de lavage.
Le linge est constitué de pièces de coton décati à double ourlet, de dimensions

approximatives 70 cm × 70 cm et de masse spécifique comprise entre 140 g/m et 175 g/m à
sec.
NOTE 101 Si, dans les machines à laver à pulsateur à rotation continue, le linge n'est pas agité correctement
pendant le fonctionnement, la quantité de linge est réduite jusqu'à obtention de la puissance maximale du moteur.
4 Prescriptions générales
L’article de la Partie 1 est applicable.
5 Conditions générales d’essais
L’article de la Partie 1 est applicable avec les exceptions suivantes.
5.2 Addition:
Les essais appropriés des 21.101, 21.102 et 22.104 doivent être effectués sur le même
appareil que celui qui est utilisé pour l’essai de l’Article 18.
5.3 Addition:
L’essai de 15.101 est réalisé avant celui de 15.3.

3.1.9 Replacement:

operation of the appliance under the following conditions

The appliance is filled with textile material having a mass in the dry condition equal to the

maximum mass stated in the instructions, and with the maximum quantity of water for which it

is constructed. However, if the power input or current is higher when only 50 % of the textile
material is used, the appliance is operated with this load instead.
The temperature of the water is
– 65 °C ± 5 °C for appliances without heating elements;
– 15 °C ± 5 °C for other appliances.
If the appliance does not incorporate a programmer, the water is heated to 90 °C ± 5 °C or as
high as the construction will allow if lower, before starting the first washing period.
The textile material consists of pre-washed double-hemmed cotton sheets having dimensions
approximately 70 cm × 70 cm and a specific mass between 140 g/m² and 175 g/m² in the dry
condition.
NOTE 101 In washing machines of the continuously rotating impeller type, if the textile material does not move
properly during operation, its quantity is reduced until the maximum power input of the motor is attained.

INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCTION
It has been assumed in the drafting of this International Standard that the execution of its

provisions is entrusted to appropriately qualified and experienced persons.

This standard recognizes the internationally accepted level of protection against hazards such

as electrical, mechanical, thermal, fire and radiation of appliances when operated as in

normal use taking into account the manufacturer's instructions. It also covers abnormal

situations that can be expected in practice and takes into account the way in which

electromagnetic phenomena can affect the safe operation of appliances.

This standard takes into account the requirements of IEC 60364 as far as possible so that
there is compatibility with the wiring rules when the appliance is connected to the supply
mains. However, national wiring rules may differ.
If an appliance within the scope of this standard also incorporates functions that are covered
by another part 2 of IEC 60335, the relevant part 2 is applied to each function separately, as
far as is reasonable. If applicable, the influence of one function on the other is taken into
account.
This standard is a product family standard dealing with the safety of appliances and takes
precedence over horizontal and generic standards covering the same subject.
An appliance that complies with the text of this standard will not necessarily be considered to
comply with the safety principles of the standard if, when examined and tested, it is found to
have other features that impair the level of safety covered by these requirements.
An appliance employing materials or having forms of construction differing from those detailed
in the requirements of this standard may be examined and tested according to the intent of
the requirements and, if found to be substantially equivalent, may be considered to comply
with the standard.

Les appareils qui ne sont pas destinés à un usage domestique normal mais qui peuvent
néanmoins constituer une source de danger pour le public, tels les appareils destinés à être
utilisés par des utilisateurs non avertis dans des magasins, chez des artisans et dans les
fermes, sont compris dans le domaine d'application de la présente norme.
NOTE 102 Comme exemples de tels appareils, on peut citer les machines à laver mises à la disposition
commune des utilisateurs dans des immeubles d'habitation ou dans les laveries automatiques.
Dans la mesure du possible, la présente norme traite des risques ordinaires présentés par les

1 Scope
This clause of Part 1 is replaced by the following.
This International Standard deals with the safety of electric washing machines for household
and similar use, that are intended for washing clothes and textiles, their rated voltage being
not more than 250 V for single-phase appliances and 480 V for other appliances.
NOTE 101 Washing machines also supplied with other forms of energy are within the scope of this standard.
Appliances not intended for normal household use but which nevertheless may be a source of
danger to the public, such as appliances intended to be used by laymen in shops, in light
industry and on farms, are within the scope of this standard.
NOTE 102 Examples of such appliances are washing machines for communal use in blocks of flats or in
launderettes.
As far as is practicable, this standard deals with the common hazards presented by
appliances that are encountered by all persons in and around the home. However, in general,
it does not take into account
– the use of appliances by young children or infirm persons without supervision;
– playing with the appliance by young children.
NOTE 103 Attention is drawn to the fact that
– for appliances intended to be used in vehicles or on board ships or aircraft, additional requirements may be
necessary;
– in many countries additional requirements are specified by the national health authorities, the national
authorities responsible for the protection of labour, the national water supply authorities and similar

– for appliances having a separate spin container for water extraction, IEC 60335-2-4 is also applicable;

jusqu'à la valeur la plus élevée autorisée par sa construction si celle-ci est inférieure, avant
de commencer la première période de lavage.
Le linge est constitué de pièces de coton décati à double ourlet, de dimensions

approximatives 70 cm × 70 cm et de masse spécifique comprise entre 140 g/m et 175 g/m à
sec.
NOTE 101 Pour les machines à laver de type pulsateur, si le linge n'est pas agité correctement pendant le
fonctionnement,
– la quantité de linge peut être réduite jusqu'à obtention de la puissance maximale du moteur, ou
– le linge comprenant des pièces de coton décati à double ourlet, de dimensions approximatives 90 cm × 90 cm

et de masse comprise entre 90 g/m et 110 g/m à sec, peut être utilisé.
En cas de doute, il convient que l’essai soit réalisé en utilisant la quantité réduite de linge.
4 Prescriptions générales

5 Conditions générales d’essais
L’article de la Partie 1 est applicable avec les exceptions suivantes.
5.2 Addition:
Les essais appropriés des 21.101, 21.102 et 22.104 doivent être effectués sur le même
appareil que celui qui est utilisé pour l’essai de l’Article 18.
5.3 Addition:
L’essai de 15.101 est réalisé avant celui de 15.3.

The appliance is filled with textile material having a mass in the dry condition equal to the

maximum mass stated in the instructions, and with the maximum quantity of water for which it

is constructed. However, if the power input or current is higher when only 50 % of the textile
material is used, the appliance is operated with this load instead.
The temperature of the water is
– 65 °C ± 5 °C for appliances without heating elements;
– 15 °C ± 5 °C for other appliances;
– 15 °C ± 5 °C for appliances without heating elements and intended for connection to the
cold water supply only.
If the appliance does not incorporate a programmer, the water is heated to 90 °C ± 5 °C or as
high as the construction will allow if lower, before starting the first washing period.
The textile material consists of pre-washed double-hemmed cotton sheets having dimensions
approximately 70 cm × 70 cm and a specific mass between 140 g/m² and 175 g/m² in the dry
