IEC 61591:2023/AMD1:2026 - Amendment 1 - Cooking fume extractors - Methods for measuring performance
IEC 61591:2023/AMD1:2026 - Amendement 1 - Extracteurs de fumée de cuisine - Méthodes de mesure de l'aptitude a la fonction
IEC 61591:2023/AMD1:2026 is an IEC amendment to the International Standard for cooking fume extractors (CFEs). It updates the methods used to measure CFE performance, including standby power, installation, lighting, fluid dynamic efficiency (FDE), odour reduction and grease absorption. It is aimed at test laboratories, manufacturers, and quality or buying teams that compare CFE performance data.
What does IEC 61591:2023/AMD1:2026 specify?
IEC 61591:2023/AMD1:2026 updates IEC 61591:2023 for the measurement of CFE performance. The amendment revises references, definitions, test setup details, calculation wording, low-power-mode procedures and measurement uncertainty guidance.
The amendment is organized around these parts:
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex B | Low power mode measurements, including off mode, standby mode and networked standby |
| Annex C | Informative uncertainty of measurement, based on a round-robin test and IEC TR 63250:2021 |
What are the key requirements of IEC 61591:2023/AMD1:2026?
IEC 61591:2023/AMD1:2026 mainly tightens how CFEs are prepared, measured and reported so that results are comparable across laboratories. For users, that means more consistent test conditions and clearer records of what was measured.
Clause 2, normative references updates the publications used for standby and unit-related measurements. In practice, test teams must use the referenced measurement rules and unit system consistently, especially for low-power testing and calculations.
Clause 3.24, standby mode replaces the definition of standby mode with a narrower description of what the appliance may do while still being in standby. This matters because manufacturers and labs must classify modes carefully before measuring power.
Clause 6.2, installation and positioning adds that pull-out or swing-out mechanisms are not counted for the lowest level of the CFE. This affects how the appliance height is set up in the test rig.
Clause 6.6, instrumentation and measurements updates the instrument table for mass, temperature, time, power, illuminance, pressure and linear dimensions. It also names the allowed temperature sensors, so laboratories know which instruments and accuracies are acceptable.
Clause 8.2.1 and Annex B require IEC 62301 and IEC 63474 to be applied for standby-related measurements, and the waiting time after interaction is now 20 min. This changes the test sequence and means operators must avoid extra interaction during the waiting period.
Clause 11.3.3 replaces the fluid dynamic efficiency (FDE) formula. That affects how airflow and pressure results are turned into the reported efficiency value.
Clauses 12.2, 13.2 and 14.2 adjust the lighting measurement distance, the CFE installation setup, and the chamber figure for grease absorption testing. These changes matter because small setup differences can change measured performance.
What terms does IEC 61591:2023/AMD1:2026 define?
IEC 61591:2023/AMD1:2026 defines and uses several terms that shape the test methods.
- Cooking fume extractor (CFE) - the appliance type covered by the performance measurements.
- Standby mode - a connected condition where the appliance only performs limited functions such as reactivation, indication or protection.
- Reactivation function - a function that lets the appliance return from standby after user interaction.
- Networked standby - the low-power condition used when the appliance stays connected to a network.
- Fluid dynamic efficiency (FDE) - the performance metric calculated from the airflow and pressure results.
- Grease absorption factor - the measure used to report grease capture performance.
- Odour reduction factor - the measure used to report how much odour is reduced during testing.
Who uses IEC 61591:2023/AMD1:2026?
IEC 61591:2023/AMD1:2026 is used by manufacturers of CFEs, appliance test laboratories, certification bodies and quality teams. It is also useful for buyers and specifiers who need to compare performance claims from different products.
In practice, these users apply it for product development, type testing, conformity assessment, performance reporting and procurement decisions. It helps them set up the same test conditions and read results in the same way.
What changed in IEC 61591:2023/AMD1:2026 from the previous edition?
IEC 61591:2023/AMD1:2026 amends IEC 61591:2023. The amendment updates the normative references, revises the standby mode definition, adds a positioning note in Clause 6.2, replaces the instrument table in Clause 6.6, changes the low-power and standby measurement instructions in Clause 8, revises the FDE formula, adjusts the lighting and installation measurement setup, replaces Figure 5, updates Annex B, and adds informative Annex C on uncertainty.
Which standards are used with IEC 61591:2023/AMD1:2026?
IEC 61591:2023/AMD1:2026 refers to several standards and companion publications that support its measurements.
- IEC 62301 - measurement of standby power for appliances and equipment.
- IEC 63474 - applied together with IEC 62301 in the standby and networked standby procedures.
- ISO 80000-1:2022 - quantities and units used in reporting and calculations.
- IEC 60584-1 - requirements for the type J or K thermocouples used in temperature measurement.
- IEC 60751 - requirements for PT100 temperature sensors.
- IEC 60350-1:2023 and IEC 60350-1:2023/AMD1:2025 - the source of the revised standby mode wording cited in Clause 3.24.
- IEC TR 63250:2021 - the basis for the uncertainty approach used in Annex C.
What does the IEC 61591:2023/AMD1:2026 document contain?
IEC 61591:2023/AMD1:2026 contains revised measurement methods, a changed instrument table, an updated efficiency formula, a lighting measurement figure, a grease-absorption chamber figure, a step-by-step low-power-mode procedure, and an informative uncertainty annex.
It also includes the supporting tables and figures used for test setup and reporting, including Table 1, Figure 3, Figure 5, Table B.1 and Table C.1. These items are used by laboratories when they set up tests, record results and prepare technical reports.
