Tests on electric and optical fibre cables under fire conditions - Part 1-2: Test for vertical flame propagation for a single insulated wire or cable - Procedure for 1 kW pre-mixed flame

IEC 60332‑1‑2:2025 specifies the procedure for testing the resistance to vertical flame propagation for a single vertical electrical insulated conductor or cable, or optical fibre cable, under fire conditions using a 1 kW pre-mixed flame. The apparatus is described in IEC 60332‑1‑1.
NOTE 1 Testing to IEC 60332‑1‑2 can be performed simultaneously with that to IEC 60332‑1‑3, if required.
This group safety publication focusing on test method(s) is primarily intended to be used as a product safety standard for the products mentioned in the scope, but is also intended to be used by technical committees in the preparation of standards for products similar to those mentioned in the scope of this group safety publication, in accordance with the principles laid down in IEC Guide 104 and lSO/lEC Guide 51.
NOTE 2 The performing of this test method on a single insulated conductor or cable or optical fibre cable does not provide compliance with fire propagation requirements in relevant standards in the case that the single insulated conductor or cable or optical fibre cable is installed with or amongst other cables as a group. (See the IEC 60332‑3 series).
One of the responsibilities of a technical committee is, wherever applicable, to make use of basic safety publications and/or group safety publications in the preparation of its publications.

Overview

IEC 60332-1-2:2025 specifies a standardized laboratory procedure to assess vertical flame propagation for a single insulated electrical conductor, cable or optical fibre cable using a 1 kW pre‑mixed flame. The series apparatus is defined in IEC 60332-1-1. This Edition 2.0 (2025) updates positioning requirements and adds performance criteria (Annex A). The test is a product‑safety test method used by manufacturers, test laboratories and technical committees to evaluate single‑cable flame behaviour under fire conditions.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Single vertical insulated conductor, cable or optical fibre cable tested for vertical flame propagation using a 1 kW pre‑mixed flame.
  • Apparatus: Use the test enclosure and burner arrangement detailed in IEC 60332-1-1.
  • Sample size: Test piece length 600 ± 25 mm. Overall diameter measured per IEC 60811‑203 (three measurements averaged).
  • Conditioning: (23 ± 5) °C, (50 ± 20) % RH, for at least 16 h. Painted/lacquered samples require a prior 60 °C for 4 h treatment.
  • Mounting & positioning:
    • Distance between supports: 550 ± 5 mm.
    • Bottom of specimen ~50 mm from base of enclosure; centered laterally.
    • Recommended retaining wire diameters: 1.0 ± 0.3 mm for cables ≤50 mm, 1.5 ± 0.3 mm for >50 mm.
    • If sample moves, use 1 mm wire loops positioned ~50 ± 5 mm below and 50 ± 5 mm and 150 ± 5 mm above the blue cone impingement point.
  • Flame application:
    • Burner tip (blue cone) impinges 475 ± 5 mm from upper support; burner angled 45 ± 2° to vertical.
    • Flame exposure times depend on overall diameter:
      • D ≤ 25 mm: 60 ± 2 s
      • 25 < D ≤ 50 mm: 120 ± 2 s
      • 50 < D ≤ 75 mm: 240 ± 2 s
      • D > 75 mm: 480 ± 2 s
  • Safety: Explicit warnings on fire/explosion risk, inhalation of smoke or noxious products (notably halogenated materials), and harmful residues.
  • Evaluation: After burning ceases, residues are examined and results evaluated against the performance requirements (Annex A).

Applications and users

IEC 60332-1-2 is used by:

  • Cable and optical fibre manufacturers for product development and internal QA.
  • Accredited fire‑test laboratories performing routine type testing and compliance checks.
  • Certification bodies and safety assessors verifying product flame behaviour as a product‑safety test method.
  • Standards committees preparing product standards that reference single‑cable flame performance.

Note: This single‑cable test does not substitute for group‑cable propagation tests (see the IEC 60332‑3 series) when cables are installed in bundles or trays.
