BRIEF HlSTORY
The IS0 Recommendation K 1 16 1, Specijicutioti of cornerfittings for serieh 1 jreight containers, was drawn
up by Technical Committee ISO/TC 104, Frcight containers, the Secretariat of wliicli IS held by the American
National Standards Institute (ANSI).
Work on this question led to the adoption of a Draft IS0 Recommendation

In March 1968, this Draft IS0 Recommendation (No. 1019) was circulated tu all the IS0 Member Bodies for
enquiry. It received the necessary majority for approval. However, since technical iiiuùifications had been made in
the Draft, lSO/TC 104 Secretariat submitted a second Draft IS0 Recommendation No. 1019, in January 1969, to
all IS0 Member Bodies for enquiry. This second Draft was approved, subject to a few modifications of an editorial
nature, by the following Member Bodies .

SPECIFICATION OF CORNER FITTINGS
FOR SERIES 1 FREIGHT CONTAINERS
IN'TKODUCTION
This IS0 Recommendation on corner fittings represents the efforts of technical and operational personnel
drawn from ail phases of transportation industry. The drawings describe the fittings for the top and bottom
corner of series 1 freight containers which will provide compatibility in interchange between transportation
modes. Care has been taken to limit consideration only to those details vital to this function.
The location, size and configuration of corner fitting apertures are specified. The faces of the corner fittings
having apertures for the engagement of handling and securing devices have prescribed thickness and tolerances
as shown in Figures 2, 3, 4 and 5 on pages 8 to 11. The thickness of the blank wails is not prescribed since
they are not involved in the engagement of the handling and securing devices, as long as their inner surfaces
do not protrude into the corner fitting cavity reserved for the engaging devices. Examples of handling and
securing devices are shown in Annex A.
The purpose of this IS0 Recommendation is to define those details of design vital to container interchange
in automatic, semi-automatic and conventional systems. Examples of the use of corner fittings are shown in
Annex B.
The criteria used in determining the design are given in Annex C.
NOTE. - The requirements of this IS0 Recommendation do not preclude the provision of additional facilities for lifting
either from the top or at the base of the freight container.

1. SCOPE
This IS0 Recommendation establishes the basic dimensions and the functional and strength requirements
of corner fittings for series 1 freight containers which conform to IS0 Recommendation R 668, Dimensions and
ratings of freight containers.
2. DIMENSIONS
The dimensions and tolerances of the corner fittings shall conform to the drawings, Figures 2,3,4 and 5, on
pages 8 to 11. Each container will have two right-hand top corner fittings (on the right as the observer faces
the container) and two left-hand top corner fittings which are the mirror opposite of the right-hand fittings
(see Figure 1). When bottom corner fittings are required, a similar configuration would exist. The corner fitting
drawings on pages 8 to 11 illustrate right-hand (RH) top and bottom corner fittings only; for the left-hand (LH)
corner fittings the dimensions are simply transposed.
After assembly and installation of the corner fittings, the perpendicularity or trueness of the assembled fittings
shall be determined by measuring the difference between dimensions DI and D2, between D3 and D4 and between
D, and 06 illustrated in Figure 6, page 12. The maximum allowable differences, expressed as “KI max.” and
“K2 max.” in the table on page 13, shall not be exceeded.
3. STRENGTH REQUIREMENTS
The comer fittings shall be designed and constructed in such a manner and of such materials as to enable them
to pass the operating and testing requirements which are covered in IS0 Recommendation R 1496*, Specification
and testing of series 1 freight containers.

HISTORIQUE
La Recommandation ISO/R 116 1, Spécifications pour les pieces de coin des conteneurs de la Serie I, a été
élaborée par le Comité Technique ISO/TC 104, Conteneurs pour le transport de marchandises, dont le Secrétariat
est assuré par 1’American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
Les travaux relatifs à ce sujet aboutirent à l’adoption d’un Projet de Recommandation ISO.

En mars 1968, ce Projet de Recommandation IS0 (NO 1019) fut soumis à l’enquête de tous les Comités
Membres de I’ISO. I1 fut approuvé par la majorité requise. Cependant, des modifications techniques ayant été
apportées au Projet, le Secrétariat ISO/TC 104 soumit, en janvier 1969, un deuxième Projet de Recommandation
IS0 No 1019 à l’enquête de tous les Comités Membres de I’ISO. Ce deuxième Projet fut approuvé, sous réserve
de quelques modifications d’ordre rédactionnel, par les Comités Membres suivants :

INTRODUCTlON
La présente Recommandation IS0 sur les pièces de coin représente les efforts de techniciens et de praticiens
appartenant à tous les stades de l’industrie des transports. Les dessins représentent les pièces pour les coins supé-
rieurs et inférieurs des conteneurs de la série 1, lesquelles rendront possibles les échanges entre les différents moyens
de transport terrestre. Seuls les détails essentiels pour cette utilisation ont été pris en considération.
L‘emplacement, les dimensions et la forme des ouvertures des pièces de coin sont spécifiés. L’épaisseur et les
tolérances des faces de pièces de coin munies d’ouvertures pour l’engagement de pièces de manutention et de
faation sont spécifiées (voir Fig. 2 à 5, pages 8 à 11). L’épaisseur des parois nues n’est pas précisée, car celles-ci
n’interviennent pas dans l’engagement des pièces de manutention et de fixation pour autant que leur face interne
ne fasse pas saillie dans la cavité de la pièce de coin destinée à recevoir la pièce devant y être engagée. Des exemples
de dispositifs de manutention et de fixation sont donnes dans l’Annexe A.
Le but de cette Recommandation IS0 est de définir les détails de construction essentiels pour le transbordement
de conteneurs dans les systèmes automatiques, semi-automatiques et conventionnels. Des exemples d’utilisation
des pièces de coin sont donnés dans l’Annexe B.
Les critères de conception sont donnés dans l’Annexe C
NOTE. - Les conditions requises sgkcifiées dans la présente Recommandation IS0 ne doivent en aucune manière constituer un
obstacle à l’agencement de dispositifs supplémentaires pour le levage du conteneur par la base ou par le sommet.
