BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 138, Universal Yarn Count System, was drawn up by Technical
Committee ISO/TC 38, Textiles, the Secretariat of which is held by the British Standards Insti-
tution (B.S.I.).
The advantages of a universal system of designating the linear density of fibres, yarns and
other textile products were recognized at the first meeting of ISO/TC 38, held in Buxton, in June
1948. The principles on which such a system should preferably be based were generally accepted.
1951, these
After a further discussion at the second meeting held in Bournemouth, in June
principles were re-affirmed but two basic units were recognized, namely: gramme per kilometre
and gramme per ten kilometres.
At the third meeting, held in Southport, in May 1956, there was general agreement that the
existence of two basic units had militated against the acceptance of a universal system as pre-
viously outlined. Unanimous agreement was then reached on a single basic unit (gramme per
kilometre) to be designated as (( tex B. This advance made it po

HISTORIQUE
