BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 1977, Conveyor chains, attachments and chain wheels - Part I : Chains (Metric
series), was drawn up by Technical Committee ISO/TC 100, Chains and chain wheels for power transmission and
conveyors, the Secretariat of which is held by the British Standards Institution (BSI).
Work on this question led to the adoption of Draft IS0 Recommendation No. 1977, which was circulated
to all the IS0 Member Bodies for enquiry in January 1970. It was approved, subject to a few modifications of an

editorial nature, by the following Member Bodies :

INTRODUCTION
This IS0 R iomm dation h s been ired with a view to ensurin intercha geability of comple I chains and
interchangeability of individual links c :hains for repair purposes.
Subsequent documents will relate to attachments and chain wheels.
1. SCOPE
This IS0 Recommendation applies to metric-dimensioned bush, plain and flanged roller chains of both solid and
hollow bearing pin types designed for general conveying and mechanical handling duties.
2. NOMENCLATURE
The nomenclature of chains is as given in the Figure on page 5 and in the key, on page 6, to Tables 1 and 2.
3. DESIGNATION
Conveyor chain designating numbers are based on the numbers given in Tables 1 and 2 (column 1). The numbers
are derived from the minimum breaking loads (in kilonewtons) and are given the prefix M to indicate solid bearing
pin chain, or prefix MC to indicate hollow bearing pin chain.
Examples
M80 = Solid bearing pin chain of 80 kN nominal breaking load.
MC224 = Hollow bearing pin chain of 224 kN nominal breaking load.
The symbol B (bush), F (flanged), P (plain) or S (small) is added, as appropriate, to indicate the type. This is
followed by further digits indicating the pitch in millimetres.
Example :
MC224-F-200 = Chain MC224 with flanged roller and pitch of 200 mm.

4. DIMENSIONS
Conveyor chains should conform to the dimensions given in Tables 1 and 2. Maximum and minimum dimensions
are specified to ensure interchangeability of links as produced by different makers of chain. They represent limits
for interchangeability, but are not necessarily to be regarded as hits of tolerance used in manufacture.
Pitch p is a theoretical reference dimension used in calculating strand lengths and chain wheel dimensions and it is
not intended for inspection of individual links.
5. BREAKING LOADS
The test length should have a minimum of three free pitches. The ends should be attached to the testing machine

HISTORIQUE
La Recommandation ISO/R 1977, Chaînes convoyeurs, plaques d’attache et roues pour chaînes - Première
parrie : Chaînes (Série mérrique), a été élaborée par le Comité Technique ISOlTC 100, Chaînes et roues à chaînes
pour transmission d’énergie et convoyeurs, dont le Secrétariat est assuré par la British Standards Institution (BSI).
Les travaux relatifs à cette question aboutirent à l’adoption du Projet de Recommandation IS0 No 1977 qui
fut soumis, en janvier 1970, à l’enquête de tous les Comités Membres de I’ISO. I1 fut approuvé, sous réserve de
quelques modifications d’ordre rédactionnel, par les Comités Membres suivants :

INTRODUCTION
La présente Recommandation IS0 a été préparée dans le but d’assurer l’interchangeabilité des chaînes complètes
et l’interchangeabilité individuelle des maillons en cas de réparation.
D’autres documents suivront, qui traiteront des plaques d’attache et des roues pour chaînes.
1. OBJET
La présente Recommandation IS0 s’applique aux séries métriques de chaînes à douilles, à galets lisses et épaulés,
avec axes pleins et axes creux, conçues pour les opérations générales de manutention et de transport mécaniques.
2. NOMENCLATURE
La nomenclature des chaînes est indiquée sur la Figure, en page 5, et dans la clé de désignation des cotes des
Tableaux 1 et 2, en page 6.
3. DÉSIGNATION
Les chaînes convoyeurs sont désignées par les symboles numériques indiqués dans les Tableaux 1 et 2(colonne 1).
Ces symboles numériques correspondent aux charges de rupture minimales (exprimées en kilonewtons) et sont
précédés du préfne M pour désigner les chaînes à axes pleins ou du préfixe MC pour désigner les chaînes à axes
creux.
Exemples :
M80 = Chaîne à axes pleins de charge de rupture nominale de 80 kN.
MC224 = Chaîne à axes creux de charge de rupture nominale de 224 kN.
Le symbole B (douille), F (galet épaulé), P (galet lisse) ou S (rouleau) est ajouté selon les cas pour indiquer le
type. Ce symbole est suivi d’un nombre qui indique le pas en millimètres.
Exemple 1
MC224-F-200 = Chaîne de MC224 à galet épaulé et pas de 200 mm.

4. DIMENSIONS
Les chaînes convoyeurs doivent être conformes aux dimensions indiquées dans les Tableaux 1 et 2. Les dimensions
maximales et minimales sont spécifiées pour assurer l’interchangeabilité des maillons quel qu’en soit le fabricant.
