BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 241, Shanks for Turning and Planing Tools. Sections and Tole-
rances, was drawn up by Technical Committe lSO/TC 29, Small Tools, the Secretariat of which is
held by the Association Française de Normalisation (AFNOR).
Work on this question by the Technical Committee began in 1947, taking into account the
studies which had been made by the former International Federation of the National Standardizing
Associations (ISA), and led, in 1958, to the adoption of a Draft IS0 Recommendation.
In September 1959, this Draft IS0 Recommendation (No. 307) was submitted to all the IS0
Member Bodies for enquiry. It was approved, subject to some editorial amendments, by the follow-
ing Member Bodies :

Czechoslovakia Mexico United Kingdom
France Netherlands U. S. A.
Germany Pakistan U. S. S. R.
Greece Poland
One Member Body opposed the approval of the Draft: Switzerland.
The Draft IS0 Recommendation was then submitted by correspondence to the IS0 Council,
which decided, in December 1961, to accept it as an IS0 RECOMMENDATION.

INTRODUCTION
I. SCOPE
This IS0 Recommendation for sections and tolerances of shanks for turning and planing tools
provides for three types of sections:
1. Round sections,
2. Square sections,
3. Rectangular sections with ratios of height to width of respectively:
approximately 1.25,
approximately 1.6 and
approximately 2,
and comprises two tables, giving respectively
(1) the dimensions in millimetres. . Table 1.1,
(2) the corresponding dimensions in inches . Table 1.2.

HISTORIQUE
La Recommandation ISO/R 241, Queues d’outils de tournage et de rabotage. Sections et tolé-
rances, a été élaborée par le Comité Technique ISO/TC 29, Petit outillage, dont le Secrétariat est
assuré par l’Association Française de Normalisation (AFNOR).
Les travaux relatifs à cette question furent entrepris en 1947 par le Comité Technique, qui prit
en considération les études qui avaient été effectuées par l’ancienne Fédération Internationale des
Associations Nationales de Normalisation (ISA). Les travaux aboutirent en 1958 à l’adoption d’un
ISO.
Projet de Recommandation
En septembre 1959, ce Projet de Recommandation IS0 (NO 307) fut soumis à l’enquête de
tous les Comités Membres de YISO. I1 fut approuvé, sous réserve de modifications d’ordre rédac-
tionnel, par les Comités Membres suivants :

Un Comité Membre se déclara opposé à l’approbation du Projet: Suisse.
Le Projet de Recommandation IS0 fut alors soumis par correspondance au Conseil de 1’ISO
qui décida, en dé~embre~l961, de l’accepter comme RECOMMANDATION ISO.

INTRODUCTION
I. OBJET
La présente Recommandation ISO, relative aux sections et tolérances de queues d’outils de
tournage et de rabotage, prévoit trois types de sections:
1. Section ronde,
2. Section carrée,
3. Sections rectangulaires, ayant respectivement pour rapport entre la hauteur et la largeur:
une valeur voisine de 1,25,
une valeur voisine de 1,6 et
une valeur voisine de 2,
et comporte deux tableaux, donnant respectivement
1) les dimensions en millimètres . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Tableau 1.1,
2) les dimensions correspondantes en inches .
