BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 116, Common Names for Pesticides - First List, was
drawn up by Technical Committee ISO/TC 81, Common Names for Pesticides, the Secretariat
of which is held by the British Standards Institution (B.S.I.).
During its first plenary meeting, held in London, in November 1955, the Technical
Committee ISO/TC 81, began its studies for this IS0 Recommendation. A list of names was
put forward by the Technical Committee Secretariat and those names which were acceptable
to members were circulated, in April 1956, as a draft proposal.
As a result of comments received the Technical Committee Secretariat prepared a second
draft proposal which was then accepted as a Draft IS0 Recommendation.
On 17 July 1957, the Draft IS0 Recommendation (No. 166) was distributed to all the
IS0 Member Bodies and was approved by the following 23 (out of a total of 39) Member Bodies:

Council, which decided, in August 1959, to accept it as an IS0 RECOMMENDATION.

COMMON NAMES FOR PESTICIDES
FIRST LIST
FOREWORD
This IS0 Recommendation gives the first list of common names approved by Technical
Committee ISO/TC 81, Common Names for Pesticides, for certain pesticides of international
importance. The chemical name, in conformity with the rules of the International Union of
Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), is given in each case, as well as chemical formulae and
notes concerning some of the names. The application of each compound is indicated in a
separate column according to the following classes :
A Insecticides or acaricides
B Fungicides
C Herbicides
D Rodenticides
It is proposed in due course to issue further IS0 Recommendations for approved common
names, In some cases, widely used names are not available for international use at the present
time, because they are protected by trade marks in certain countries.
For example, this difficulty precludes the inclusion in this list of the following names:
pp’-DDT for the chemical 1,l,l-trichloro-2,2-di-(p-chloro-phenyl)-ethane and
DDT for a complex chemical mixture consisting predominantly of pp’-DDT.

HISTORIQUE
La Recommandation ISO/R 116, Noms communs pour les pesticides - Première liste,
a été élaborée par le Comité Technique ISO/TC 81, Noms communs pour les pesticides, dont
le Secrétariat est assuré par la British Standards Institution (B.S.I.).
Les études qui ont abouti 2i cette Recommandation ISO, furent entreprises par le Cornite
Technique ISO/TC 81, dès sa première réunion pltnière, tenue à Londres, en novembre 1955.
Une liste de noms fut présentée par le Secrttariat du Cornite Technique et ceux qui furent acceptes
au cours de la réunion figurèrent dans l’avant-projet distribue aux membres du Comit6 Tech-
nique, en avril 1956.
Compte tenu des observations formulées au cours de cette enquête, le Secrétariat du
Comitt Technique établit un deuxième avant-projet qui fut alors adopte comme Projet de
Recommandation ISO.
Le 17 juillet 1957, ce Projet de Recommandation IS0 (NO 166), fut distribue à tous les
Comités Membres de I’ISO et approuvé par les Comitds Membres suivants (au nombre de 23
sur un total de 39):

AVANT-PROPOS
La presente Recommandation IS0 donne la premitre liste de noms communs approuves
par le Comit6 Technique ISO/TC 81, Noms communs pour les pesticides, pour certains pesticides
d’importance internationale. Le nom chimique, conforme aux règles de l’Union Internationale
de Chimie pure et appliquke (UICPA), est donne dans chaque cas, ainsi que les formules chimi-
ques et des notes relatives A certains noms. L’application de chaque compose est indiquee dans
une colonne separee, selon les classes suivantes :
A Insecticides ou acaricides
B Fongicides
C Herbicides
D Rodenticides
I1 est prevu de publier, en temps opportun, d’autres Recommandations IS0 pour des noms
communs approuves. Dans certains cas des noms largement utilises ne sont pas pour l’instant
utilisables sur le plan international parce qu’ils sont proteges par des marques de fabrique
dans certains pays.
Par exemple, cette difficulté empêche d’inclure dans cette liste les noms suivants:
pp’-DDT pour le produit chimique 1,1,l-trichloro-2,2-di-@-chlorophényl)-6thane et
DDT pour un melange chimique complexe avec une predominance de pp’-DDT.
