Overview

ISO 104:2015 - Rolling bearings - Thrust bearings - Boundary dimensions, general plan defines preferred boundary dimensions for thrust bearings with flat back faces. It covers both single-direction and double-direction thrust bearings, specifies the minimum bore diameters of housing washers and maximum outside diameters of shaft washers for selected dimension series (11, 12, 13, 14, 22, 23, 24), and provides guidance for extending the standard for single‑direction bearings (Annex A). The standard includes figures, symbols and tabulated nominal values (Tables 1–9) used for design and interchangeability.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Boundary dimensions: Nominal external and bore sizes, bearing heights and washer dimensions for thrust bearings with flat back faces.
  • Single‑ and double‑direction configurations: Distinct tables and figures (Figures 1 and 2) illustrate geometry and dimensional callouts for each type.
  • Washer limits: Minimum bore diameters for housing washers and maximum outside diameters for shaft washers in the listed dimension series.
  • Symbols and terminology: Uses terms from ISO 5593 and symbols from ISO 15241 to ensure consistent notation.
  • Chamfer and corner treatment: Chamfer dimensions r (and s) referenced; largest single chamfer values are given in ISO 582.
  • Tabulated data: Tables 1–9 present nominal values (d, D, T, r, etc.) by dimension series to support standard design choices.
  • Extension guidance: Annex A gives informative guidelines for extending the standard to additional single‑direction thrust bearings.
  • Scope boundary: Aligning thrust bearings and aligning seat washers (non‑flat back faces) are covered in ISO 20516, not ISO 104.

Practical applications

  • Design and engineering: Select standardized thrust bearing sizes for axial-load applications to ensure interchangeability and reliable assembly.
  • Manufacturing and quality control: Use nominal boundary dimensions and chamfer limits for production tolerances, inspection plans and CNC machining set‑ups.
  • CAD and product data: Populate component libraries and BOMs with ISO 104 dimensions for accurate digital modelling.
  • Procurement and specification: Create unambiguous procurement specs and compare supplier offerings using ISO‑referenced sizes.
  • Maintenance and retrofits: Identify replacement washers and bearings that meet standardized boundary dimensions.

iso.org/directives).
