Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.

This International Standard specifies certain characteristics of the essential oil of thyme containing thymol,
Spanish type [Thymus zygis (Loefl.) L.], with a view to facilitating the assessment of its quality.

4 Requirements
4.1 Appearance
Mobile liquid.
4.2 Colour
Yellowish to red.
NOTE The essential oil obtained by steam distillation in a stainless steel kettle would have a much lighter colour than
that distilled in other materials. The rectification of red thyme leads to the so called “white thyme” with similar
characteristics.
4.3 Odour
Characteristic, aromatic, phenolic (thymol), with a slightly spicy base.

Maximum: 0,937.
4.5 Refractive index at 20 °C
Minimum: 1,494.
Maximum: 1,504.

Between 0° and −6°.

4 Spécifications
4.1 Aspect
Liquide mobile.
4.2 Couleur
Jaunâtre à rouge.
NOTE L'huile essentielle obtenue par entraînement à la vapeur d'eau dans un alambic en acier inoxydable aurait une
couleur beaucoup plus claire que celle distillée dans d'autres matériaux. La rectification du thym rouge conduit à
l'obtention du «thym blanc» qui a des caractéristiques similaires.
4.3 Odeur
Caractéristique, aromatique, phénolique (thymol), avec un fond légèrement épicé.
