FOREWORD
IS0 (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation
of national standards institutes (IS0 Member Bodies). The work of developing
International Standards is carried out through IS0 Technical Committees. Every
Member Body interested in a subject for which a Technical Committee has been set
up has the right to be represented on that Committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
Draft International Standards adopted by the Technical Committees are circulated
to the Member Bodies for approval before their acceptance as International
Standards by the IS0 Council.
International Standard IS0 1361 (originally draft No. 333) was drawn up by
Technical Committee ISO/TC 52, Hermetically sealed metal food containers.
It was approved in October 1970 by the Member Bodies of the following
countries :

It is hoped that all countries will regard cans falling within the specified deviations
of a given nominal value as being "commercially similar". These deviations1 should
not be regarded as manufacturing tolerances. All can measurements are given in
accordance with the provisions of IS0 go2), Hermetically sealed metal food
containers. The Technical Committee responsible for the preparation of this
document is engaged in further work as a result of which it is hoped to issue an
International Standard giving a range of related diameters and capacities.

1 SCOPE AND FIELD OF APPLICATION NOTE -- For the purposes of this International Standard the term
"milk can" is limited to cans for the following products:
This International Standard lists recommended diameters
- sweetened condensed milk;
for
- evaporated milk (sometimes called unsweetened condensed
- round open-top cans for general purposes;
milk);
- round cans for milk, liquid milk products and milk
powder :
- sterilized milk (not condensed);
a) open-top cans;
- sterilized cream (not condensed).
b) vent hole cans;
Cans for any milk products with added flavours, malted milk or
other formulated milk are not covered by this International
c) cans for milk powders.
