ISO 15836-1:2017 establishes 15 core metadata elements for cross-domain resource description. These terms are part of a larger set of metadata vocabularies maintained by the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative. Properties in the /terms/ namespace are included in ISO 15836-2. ISO 15836-1:2017 does not limit what might be a resource. ISO 15836-1:2017 does not provide implementation guidelines. However, the elements are typically used in the context of an application profile which constrains or specifies their use in accordance with local or community-based requirements and policies.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are

Introduction
The Dublin Core Metadata Element Set contains 15 core elements for use in resource description. The
name “Dublin” comes from its original 1995 invitational workshop, which took place in Dublin, Ohio;
“core” because these elements are broad and generic, usable for describing a wide range of resources.
The 15-element “core” specified in this document is part of a larger set of metadata vocabularies and
technical specifications maintained by the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI). The full set of
vocabularies, DCMI Metadata Terms [DCMI-TERMS], will be specified in ISO 15836-2.
The core elements may be used in combination with metadata terms from other compatible vocabularies
in the context of application profiles as specified in the DCMI Abstract Model [DCAM].
In the definitions for elements, the following conventions have been used and are explained in notes:
— each element has a descriptive label (“label”) for human recognition;
— each element also has a unique token (“name”) for use in machine processing.
In accordance with the DCMI Namespace Policy [DCMI-NAMESPACE] specified in ANSI/NISO Z39.85:2012,
the “name” of an element is appended to a DCMI namespace URI [RFC 3986] to construct a Uniform
Resource Identifier as a globally unique identifier for that element. The use of element names and URIs
in the context of different implementation technologies is explained in DCMI Encoding Guidelines [DCMI-
ENCODINGS].

Introduction
L’ensemble des éléments de métadonnées Dublin Core compte 15 éléments principaux à utiliser dans la
description de ressources. Le nom «Dublin» tire son origine d’un atelier ouvert qui se déroula en 1995,
à Dublin dans l’Ohio; le terme «core» (noyau) repose sur le fait que les éléments ont un sens large et
générique, destiné à décrire une vaste gamme de ressources.
Les 15 éléments du «Dublin Core» décrits dans la présente Norme internationale font partie d’un plus
vaste ensemble de vocabulaires de métadonnées et de spécifications techniques, maintenu par la Dublin
Core Metadata Initiative (projet des métadonnées du Dublin Core) (DCMI). L’ensemble complet des
vocabulaires, DCMI Metadata Terms (termes de métadonnées DCMI) [DCMI-TERMS], sera défini dans la
norme ISO 15836-2.
Les éléments principaux peuvent être utilisés en association avec des termes de métadonnées provenant
d’autres vocabulaires compatibles dans le contexte de profils d’application tels que définis dans le DCMI
Abstract Model (modèle abstrait de la DCMI) [DCAM].
Dans les définitions des éléments, les conventions suivantes ont été utilisées et sont expliquées en note:
— à chaque élément est associé un libellé descriptif («libellé») destiné à la reconnaissance par les
humains;
— à chaque élément est aussi associée une entité lexicale unique («nom») destinée au traitement par
les machines.
Conformément à la DCMI Namespace Policy (politique d’espace de nommage de la DCMI) [DCMI-
NAMESPACE], spécifiée dans la norme ANSI/NISO Z39.85:2012, le «nom» d’un élément est attaché
à un URI d’espace de nommage de la DCMI pour construire un Identifiant uniforme de ressource
correspondant à un identifiant universel unique pour cet élément. L’utilisation des noms et des URI
des éléments dans le contexte de différentes technologies d’implémentation est exposée dans les DCMI
Encoding Guidelines (recommandations de la DCMI pour l’encodage) [DCMI-ENCODINGS].
