ISO 8139:2026
(Main)Pneumatic fluid power — Cylinders, 1 000 kPa (10 bar) series — Mounting dimensions of rod-end spherical eyes
- Abstract
This document specifies the mounting dimensions required for interchangeability of rod-end spherical eyes of pneumatic cylinders. The rod-end spherical eyes have been designed specifically for the use with 1 000 kPa [10 bar1)] series cylinders manufactured in accordance with ISO 6432 and ISO 15552, but this does not limit their application. The spherical bearing end eyes are used on piston rods of pneumatic cylinders for mechanically transmitting the cylinder force under oscillatory rotational and tilting movements. The design of the rod-end spherical eyes is based on the maximum forces resulting from the specified internal diameter of the cylinders and pressure according to ISO 6432, ISO 15552 and ISO 21287. 1)1 bar = 0,1 MPa = 105 Pa; 1 MPa = 1 N/mm2.

ISO 8139:2026 is an International Standard published by ISO for pneumatic fluid power cylinders in the 1 000 kPa (10 bar) series. It specifies the mounting dimensions for rod-end spherical eyes so they can be used interchangeably on pneumatic cylinders, and it also gives guidance on installation, lubrication, ordering designation, and identification.
What does ISO 8139:2026 specify?
ISO 8139:2026 specifies the mounting dimensions required for interchangeability of rod-end spherical eyes of pneumatic cylinders. The standard is written for rod-end spherical eyes intended for 1 000 kPa (10 bar) series cylinders made to ISO 6432 and ISO 15552, while noting that the parts are not limited to those applications.
In practice, the standard focuses on the end fitting used on the piston rod to transmit cylinder force during oscillatory rotational and tilting movement. Its structure is straightforward: Clause 1 covers scope, Clause 2 lists normative references, Clause 3 points to the applicable terminology, Clause 4 gives mounting dimensions, Clause 5 gives application instructions, Clause 6 gives an ordering designation example, and Clause 7 gives an identification statement for conformity references.
What are the key requirements of ISO 8139:2026?
ISO 8139:2026 is mainly a dimensional interchangeability standard. The most important requirements are the identification code, the standardized geometry in Figure 1 and Table 1, and the installation and lubrication conditions needed to use the part correctly.
Dimensional identification and interchangeability
Clause 4 requires the identification code for mounting dimensions and mounting types to follow ISO 6099. The standard then ties the actual rod-end spherical eye dimensions to Figure 1 and Table 1, which means buyers and designers can match the correct geometry to the intended cylinder and rod-end arrangement.
Table 1 gives the AP6 rod-end spherical eye dimensions in millimetres, including the threaded sizes, bore size, key diameters and lengths, and the tilting angle. In practice, this is the information used to check whether a part will fit and interchange with another part of the same type.
Installation and shaft fit
Clause 5.1 says the usual shaft fit for the spherical plain bearing bore is tolerance m6, with f7 allowed in exceptional cases such as installation difficulties. If f7 is used, the standard recommends a case-hardened shaft and lubrication through the shaft, because movement then occurs between the shaft and the bearing bore.
Clause 5.1 also states that the specified tilting angle of ±4° can still be obtained when the clevis inner faces touch the side faces of the inner ring of the spherical plain bearing. It also requires the rod-end spherical eyes to be locked with a locking nut, which matters for securing the assembly in service.
Bearing life and lubrication
Clause 5.2 explains that bearing life depends on the load, load direction, oscillation angle, lubricant type, and lubrication frequency. The spherical plain bearings are intended to give acceptable life under normal operating conditions, and the supplier should be consulted for constant unidirectional load or other unusual operating conditions.
Clause 5.3 requires sufficient lubrication for satisfactory performance, and says the method and frequency depend on the operating conditions. For users, that means lubrication is not fixed by a single schedule in the standard - it has to be matched to the application.
Ordering and conformity wording
Clause 6 gives an example of an ordering designation for a rod-end spherical eye with a 20 mm bore and steel-on-steel surface. Clause 7 recommends a specific identification statement for test reports, catalogues, and sales literature when claiming conformity.
What terms does ISO 8139:2026 define?
ISO 8139:2026 applies the terms and definitions from ISO 5598, so the standard relies on shared fluid power vocabulary.
- Pneumatic fluid power cylinder - A device that converts compressed gas power into linear force and motion through a piston and piston rod in a cylindrical bore.
- Rod-end spherical eye - The spherical bearing end eye mounted on the piston rod to transmit cylinder force while allowing angular movement.
- Piston rod - The rod connected to the piston and extending from the cylinder to deliver the motion and force.
- Spherical plain bearing - The bearing arrangement at the rod end that allows oscillatory rotational and tilting movement.
- Tilting angle - The allowed angular movement of the rod-end spherical eye, given in Table 1 and referenced in Clause 5.
- AP6 - The designation used for the rod-end spherical eye type shown in Figure 1 and Table 1.
- ISO 6099 identification code - The code system used to identify mounting dimensions and mounting types.
Who uses ISO 8139:2026?
ISO 8139:2026 is used by designers and manufacturers of pneumatic cylinders and rod-end accessories, especially for 1 000 kPa (10 bar) series equipment. It is also useful for buyers, quality staff, and technical writers who need a common mounting designation and a clear way to specify interchangeability.
It matters in production, inspection, and documentation work. The standard is also relevant when preparing test reports, catalogues, sales literature, and ordering information for cylinder assemblies.
What changed in ISO 8139:2026 from the previous edition?
ISO 8139:2026 is the fifth edition and it cancels and replaces ISO 8139:2018. The stated technical changes are an update to Clause 2 and an update to Figure 1 so that the position of dimension EN reflects its previous position as mentioned in the ISO 12240 series.
Which standards are used with ISO 8139:2026?
- ISO 5598 - Provides the fluid power terminology used for the terms and definitions in Clause 3.
- ISO 6099 - Provides the identification code for mounting dimensions and mounting types used in Clause 4.
- ISO 286-2 - Provides the tolerance classes referenced for the usual m6 shaft fit and the alternative f7 fit in Clause 5.1.
- ISO 6432 - Defines the 1 000 kPa (10 bar) single rod cylinder series named in the scope.
- ISO 15552 - Defines the 1 000 kPa (10 bar) cylinder series named in the scope.
- ISO 21287 - Is cited in the scope as part of the force basis used for the design of the rod-end spherical eyes.
What does the ISO 8139:2026 document contain?
ISO 8139:2026 contains a dimensional figure and a table for AP6 rod-end spherical eyes, plus practical guidance for installation, bearing life, and lubrication. It also includes an ordering designation example and a recommended identification statement for conformity references.
For engineering and quality work, the useful parts are the mounting dimensions, the shaft fit guidance, the tilting-angle note, and the lubrication advice. For commercial and documentation work, the ordering designation and identification statement are the parts most often used.
