General Information
Relations
Overview
ISO 11629:2004 is an international standard established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) focusing on the measurement of the mass of cranes and their components. This standard provides basic, clear procedures for accurately determining the weight of various crane types as defined by ISO 4306-1. It complements ISO 4310, which covers crane testing codes and procedures. By standardizing mass measurement methods, ISO 11629:2004 ensures consistent, reliable, and internationally recognized weighing practices that support safe crane design, manufacturing, and operation.
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability
ISO 11629:2004 applies to a wide range of cranes classified under ISO 4306-1 and includes measuring the mass of both whole cranes and individual components.Measurement Apparatus and Accuracy
The standard outlines acceptable measurement devices such as:- Scales
- Dynamometers (compression or extension types)
- Supports including knife-edge and decking
- Auxiliary hoists, slings (wire rope or chain), and levels
Devices used must comply with accuracy requirements specified in ISO 9373 and relevant national regulations.
Measurement Procedures
Two main measurement approaches are discussed:- Simple measurement: simultaneous readings from one or multiple devices; preferred for practicality
- Complex measurement: sequential readings summed together when simple methods are not feasible
Important factors include: - Vertical load application without horizontal force interference
- Proper alignment of support points and suspension lines through the component’s center of mass
- Use of decking and knife-edge supports for accurate load transfer
- Possible sequential placement of large cranes or components on measuring apparatus
Data Reduction and Reporting
Measurement results must be corrected by subtracting masses of auxiliary equipment such as decking, supports, and slings.
A comprehensive measurement report is required, containing:- Crane/component type and manufacturer
- Date and supervisor of the test
- Description and test conditions (referencing ISO 4310)
- Tabulated mass measurement results
Applications
ISO 11629:2004 is essential for manufacturers, engineers, test facilities, and regulatory bodies involved in crane design, testing, certification, and maintenance. Practical applications include:
- Verification of crane weight data for transportation planning and structural load assessments.
- Quality control during manufacturing to ensure components meet mass specifications.
- Pre-commissioning tests verifying mass measurements for safety certifications and regulatory compliance.
- Support for maintenance and refurbishment projects requiring knowledge of individual component weights.
- Enhancing operational safety by confirming crane structural loads and balance through precise mass data.
This standard aids in minimizing errors, improving traceability, and facilitating international trade and regulatory acceptance of lifting equipment.
Related Standards
ISO 11629:2004 aligns with and references several key ISO standards in the crane domain, including:
- ISO 4306-1: Cranes - Vocabulary - General terms defining crane types and terminology essential for correct application of ISO 11629.
- ISO 4310: Cranes - Test code and procedures providing comprehensive testing framework that complements mass measurement methods.
- ISO 9373: Cranes and related equipment - Accuracy requirements for measuring parameters during testing, ensuring precise measurement device requirements.
- ISO 7363: Cranes and lifting appliances - Technical characteristics and acceptance documents, supporting acceptance processes related to crane mass.
For engineers, manufacturers, and testing personnel seeking standardized, accurate, and internationally accepted methods for crane mass measurement, ISO 11629:2004 provides clear guidance that enhances safety, compliance, and performance assurance.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent

Avant-propos
votants.
