Overview
ISO 9374-4:2024 - "Cranes - Information to be provided - Part 4: Jib cranes" specifies the information that purchasers must provide when enquiring or ordering a jib crane and the information manufacturers must supply when tendering for or delivering a jib crane. This second edition updates the original 1989 edition and provides a structured checklist and sample enquiry format to ensure correct specification, safe installation and proper selection of jib-crane equipment.
Key topics and technical requirements
The standard defines the minimum information exchange and documentation needed for jib crane procurement and supply. Main topics include:
- Scope and definitions: Uses terms from ISO 4306‑1 and ISO 4306‑4 to ensure consistent crane vocabulary.
- Purchaser information (Annex A / Tables A.1–A.6): recommended fields for enquiries/orders such as:
- required rated capacities (main and auxiliary hoists), radii and lift heights
- load‑lifting attachments (hook, grab, magnet, spreader)
- operating speeds (nominal, slow/creep, maximum) for hoisting, slewing, traverse and travel
- duty classification (per ISO 4301‑1 / ISO 4301‑4) or operational descriptions
- environmental and special service conditions (wind, temperature, humidity, seismic)
- controls, power supply details and limiting devices
- rail, foundation and clearance dimensions for specific crane types (portal, cantilever, derrick, high mast, fixed base)
- Manufacturer information:
- technical data consistent with ISO 9374‑1 and erection information when requested
- loads applied by the crane must be supplied in accordance with ISO 8686‑4
- necessary installation and operational dimensions (Figures 1–3 illustrate minimum dimension examples)
- Drawings and dimensions: Examples include span, boom length, tailswing radius, working radius ranges and hook heights to support installation and site planning.
Practical applications and users
ISO 9374‑4:2024 is intended for:
- Purchasers and specifiers preparing enquiries and tender documents for jib cranes
- Manufacturers and suppliers producing compliant offers, technical documents and installation instructions
- Engineering and procurement teams who coordinate foundations, railwork, power supply and site clearances
- Inspection, maintenance and safety personnel who rely on accurate duty and load information for safe use and testing
Using this standard reduces ambiguity in tenders, speeds procurement, ensures compatible site interfaces (foundations, rails, power, controls) and helps designers apply correct load and dimension data per ISO design principles.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO document should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
