ISO 8980-3:2022/Amd 1:2026 is an ISO amendment to the transmittance part of the ophthalmic optics series for uncut finished spectacle lenses. It updates the requirements for transmittance properties and claims for uncut, unmounted finished spectacle lenses, including attenuation of solar radiation, and adds specific rules for claimed wavelength cut measurements.

What does ISO 8980-3:2022/Amd 1:2026 specify?

ISO 8980-3:2022/Amd 1:2026 updates ISO 8980-3:2022 by changing the scope wording, adding a definition for wavelength cut, adding a new requirement block for claimed wavelength cut, revising the measurement uncertainty language, updating the information supplied with the lens, and adding informative Annex G.

The amendment is organized around the affected clauses:

  • Clause 3 - adds the term wavelength cut
  • Clause 6.7 - adds requirements for claimed wavelength cut
  • Clause 7.2 - replaces the measurement uncertainty and method text
  • Clause 7.3 - updates the subheading wording
  • Clause 8 - updates product information requirements
  • Annex G - gives background on parameters affecting wavelength cut measurement
AnnexWhat it covers
Annex GParameters affecting the measurement of wavelength cut, including lens geometry and spectrophotometer effects

What are the key requirements of ISO 8980-3:2022/Amd 1:2026?

Claimed wavelength cut

If ISO 8980-3:2022/Amd 1:2026 is used to claim a wavelength cut, Clause 6.7 requires the lens to meet the claimed performance at the nominated wavelength and after ultraviolet irradiation. The amendment ties the claim to measured spectral transmittance, so the claim is not just descriptive - it must be testable.

At the nominated wavelength, spectral transmittance measured under 7.2 must be below the stated limit. For wavelengths from 280 nm up to 10 nm shorter than the nominated wavelength, the transmittance must be even lower. In practice, this means a manufacturer needs a clear test result for the cut-on region, not just a general UV statement.

Measurement uncertainty and test equipment

ISO 8980-3:2022/Amd 1:2026 sets uncertainty limits for spectral transmittance measurements in Clause 7.2.1. The allowed uncertainty is tighter at lower transmittance values, which matters because wavelength cut claims depend on measurements near very low transmission.

Clause 7.2.2 also specifies the test setup for wavelength cut claims:

  • a spectrophotometer or equivalent device
  • relative uncertainty within 10%
  • spectral uncertainty within ±1.0 nm
  • spectral resolution not greater than 1 nm
  • wavelength range from 280 nm to 780 nm
  • spectral bandwidth not exceeding 2 nm

For users, this means the lab equipment and calibration need to be good enough to distinguish small shifts in cut-on wavelength, especially in the ultraviolet range.

Specimen geometry and positioning

For transmittance determination, Clause 7.2.2 uses a plano lens of 2 mm thickness. If another thickness is used, that thickness must be stated. The measurement is taken at the reference point with the incident beam normal to the front surface.

That makes results comparable between products and test labs. If thickness or alignment varies, the wavelength cut can shift, so the test conditions must be controlled and documented.

Product information

Clause 8 requires the manufacturer or supplier to supply information on the package, in an accompanying document, or in other separately provided information. The amendment allows hard copy or digital delivery, including QR or data matrix code.

The supplied information must include any claimed absorption or transmittance properties in accordance with 6.6 and/or 6.7. In practice, buyers and users need a traceable statement of the optical claim alongside the lens.

What terms does ISO 8980-3:2022/Amd 1:2026 define?

  • wavelength cut - the lowest wavelength at which the spectral transmittance rises to a specified level.
  • spectral transmittance - the wavelength-by-wavelength transmittance used to judge whether a lens meets the claimed cut and UV performance.
  • plano lens - a lens used here as the test specimen reference for transmittance measurement, specified at 2 mm thickness.
  • spectrophotometer - the instrument used to measure spectral transmittance across the wavelength range.
  • FWHM - full width at half maximum, the bandwidth limit used when specifying the spectral performance of the instrument.

Who uses ISO 8980-3:2022/Amd 1:2026?

ISO 8980-3:2022/Amd 1:2026 is used by spectacle lens manufacturers and suppliers, optical test laboratories, and quality teams that verify transmittance claims. It is also relevant to buyers and specifiers who need to check whether a lens claim for wavelength cut or solar radiation attenuation is backed by a defined test method.

What changed in ISO 8980-3:2022/Amd 1:2026 from the previous edition?

ISO 8980-3:2022/Amd 1:2026 updates the 2022 edition by:

  • revising the scope wording to include transmittance properties and claims
  • adding the defined term wavelength cut
  • adding specific requirements for claimed wavelength cut
  • replacing the measurement uncertainty text in Clause 7.2
  • adding detailed spectrophotometer and specimen requirements for wavelength cut claims
  • updating the information that must accompany the lens
  • adding informative Annex G on factors affecting wavelength cut measurement

Which standards are used with ISO 8980-3:2022/Amd 1:2026?

ISO 8980-3:2022/Amd 1:2026 points readers to these documents for related guidance:

  • ISO/IEC Guide 98-3 - guidance for evaluating measurement uncertainty
  • ISO 18526-2:2020, Annex B - advice on uncertainty issues specific to lens measurement

What does the ISO 8980-3:2022/Amd 1:2026 document contain?

The amendment contains updated requirement text rather than a standalone full standard. It changes clause wording, adds a new defined term, sets out the test conditions for claimed wavelength cut, and revises the information that must be supplied with the lens.

It also includes an informative annex with background material. Annex G explains how lens geometry and spectrophotometer characteristics can affect measured wavelength cut, which helps users understand why the test conditions are tightly specified.
