EN ISO 8980-3:2022/A1:2026 is a CEN amendment to EN ISO 8980-3:2022 for ophthalmic optics. It updates the transmittance specifications and test methods for uncut, unmounted finished spectacle lenses, with added detail for claimed wavelength cut and how that claim is checked and reported. Manufacturers, test laboratories, and buyers use it when transmittance performance needs to be stated and verified in a consistent way.

What does EN ISO 8980-3:2022/A1:2026 specify?

EN ISO 8980-3:2022/A1:2026 modifies the European Standard EN ISO 8980-3:2022 for uncut finished spectacle lenses. Its focus is the transmittance properties of lenses, including attenuation of solar radiation, and the way those properties are claimed, measured, and declared.

The amendment changes the scope wording, adds a new defined term, introduces a new requirement for claimed wavelength cut, updates measurement uncertainty rules and instrument conditions, revises the information supplied by the manufacturer or supplier, and adds informative Annex G.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex GParameters affecting the measurement of wavelength cut

What are the key requirements of EN ISO 8980-3:2022/A1:2026?

EN ISO 8980-3:2022/A1:2026 mainly tightens how wavelength cut claims are made and verified, and it gives more specific measurement conditions. For a reader, the practical effect is that a claim is not just a label - it needs supporting measurement under defined conditions.

Claimed wavelength cut

Clause 6.7 says that when a lens is claimed to have a specific wavelength cut, the claim has to meet the stated requirement for the nominated wavelength. In practice, this means the supplier needs measured spectral transmittance data that support the advertised cut-off value.

For such lenses, the spectral transmittance measured according to 7.2 must be below 5.0% at the nominated wavelength, and below 1.0% for all wavelengths from 280 nm up to 10 nm shorter than that wavelength. After ultraviolet irradiation as specified in 7.7, the claimed performance still has to be satisfied. That matters because the claim must remain valid after a durability-type exposure.

Measurement uncertainty

Clause 7.2.1 replaces the uncertainty limits for spectral transmittance measurements. The amendment sets separate limits above 20%, in the range from 20% down to 5%, and below 5%, all at a 95% confidence level. In practice, labs need to check that their method and instrument can meet these uncertainty levels before using the results for claims or acceptance.

Test method for wavelength cut claims

Clause 7.2.2 requires a spectrophotometer or equivalent device capable of spectral transmittance measurement with relative uncertainty at or below 10% and wavelength uncertainty within ±1.0 nm. The spectral resolution must not exceed 1 nm, the instrument must operate from 280 nm to 780 nm, and the spectral bandwidth must not exceed 2 nm FWHM. This is what keeps results comparable between instruments and avoids over-reading a lens cutoff.

The lens used for the measurement is a plano lens of 2 mm thickness, unless another thickness is stated. The measurement is made at the reference point with the beam normal to the front surface. For a test lab, this fixes the sample setup and reduces variation caused by geometry.

Information supplied with the lens

Clause 8 broadens how required information may be supplied. The manufacturer or supplier may provide it on the package, in an accompanying document, or in other separate information, including digital forms such as a QR code or data matrix code. The declared information now includes claimed absorption or transmittance properties in accordance with 6.6 and/or 6.7.

Annex G

Annex G gives background on why lens geometry and spectrophotometer configuration affect wavelength cut results. It explains, in practical terms, why the specified thickness, wavelength range, and instrument characteristics are needed for fair comparison.

What terms does EN ISO 8980-3:2022/A1:2026 define?

  • Wavelength cut - the lowest wavelength at which the spectral transmittance rises to a specified level.
  • Spectral transmittance - the amount of light transmitted at each wavelength, which is the basis for the wavelength cut claim.
  • Visual attenuation coefficient - the calculated measure referenced in Clause 7.3 for describing how the lens reduces visible light.
  • FWHM (full width at half maximum) - the spectrophotometer bandwidth limit used to control the sharpness of the measurement.
  • UV (ultraviolet) irradiation - the exposure used in the verification step to check that the wavelength cut claim remains valid.
  • Plano lens - a lens used in the measurement setup with no optical power, here specified at 2 mm thickness unless otherwise stated.

Who uses EN ISO 8980-3:2022/A1:2026?

EN ISO 8980-3:2022/A1:2026 is used by manufacturers and suppliers of finished spectacle lenses, test laboratories, quality control teams, and conformity assessment bodies working in ophthalmic optics. It is also useful for buyers and specifiers who need to check whether a lens’s transmittance or wavelength cut claim is supported by a defined test method. In practice, it supports product declaration, incoming inspection, and technical comparison of lenses.

What changed in EN ISO 8980-3:2022/A1:2026 from the previous edition?

EN ISO 8980-3:2022/A1:2026 modifies EN ISO 8980-3:2022 by making these changes:

  • the scope now refers to requirements and claims for transmittance properties
  • Clause 3 adds the term wavelength cut
  • Clause 6.7 adds requirements for claimed wavelength cut
  • Clause 7.2 updates measurement uncertainty requirements for spectral transmittance
  • Clause 7.2.2 adds detailed conditions for wavelength cut measurements
  • Clause 8 expands how the required information may be supplied
  • Annex G is added as informative background on wavelength cut measurement

Which standards are used with EN ISO 8980-3:2022/A1:2026?

  • ISO 18526-2:2020, Annex B - gives specific advice on uncertainty evaluation for lenses.
  • ISO/IEC Guide 98-3 - provides general guidance on evaluating measurement uncertainty.
  • EN ISO 8980-3:2022 - is the base European Standard that this amendment modifies.

What does the EN ISO 8980-3:2022/A1:2026 document contain?

EN ISO 8980-3:2022/A1:2026 contains targeted textual amendments rather than a full standalone technical specification. It changes the scope wording, adds a definition, inserts a new requirement section for claimed wavelength cut, revises the measurement uncertainty and instrument setup requirements, and updates the declaration of product information.

The document also includes an informative Annex G. That annex gives background on the factors that affect wavelength cut measurement, including lens thickness, spectrophotometer bandwidth, stray light, and inter-instrument variability. For testing and product support teams, this helps explain why the method is set up as it is and why consistent instrumentation matters.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
