Overview

ISO 8548-5:2003 is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that focuses on the clinical description of individuals who have undergone limb amputation. This standard forms part of the ISO 8548 series for prosthetics and orthotics related to limb deficiencies. Specifically, it establishes a systematic method to describe the clinical condition of a person post-amputation, emphasizing the attributes that influence rehabilitation outcomes.

The standard provides a minimum set of information that healthcare professionals, rehabilitation teams, and researchers should gather to enable consistent communication, assessment, and comparison of clinical practices worldwide. It supports improved rehabilitation planning and offers valuable data for epidemiologists and health policymakers.

Key Topics

  • Personal Factors
ISO 8548-5 requires documentation of age, gender, height, body mass, and relevant social and physical environments. Vocational and recreational activities, medical history (including tobacco use), and any pre-existing limitations affecting limbs or trunk functions must be described.

  • Musculoskeletal System Condition
The condition of the amputation stump(s) is detailed using descriptors from related standards ISO 8548-2 (lower limb) and ISO 8548-3 (upper limb). Abnormalities in the remaining limbs are also assessed using these methods, including laterality of amputation.

  • General Clinical Condition
The standard highlights clinical assessments of major body systems that impact rehabilitation, including cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, sensory organs, nutritional status, cognitive and psychological health, and other relevant conditions. Any significant disorders are noted along with their impact level (moderate or severe) and current treatments.

  • Motivation and Needs Assessment
Recognizing the influence of a person’s motivation and perceived needs on rehabilitation, ISO 8548-5 advises clinicians to record a clinical impression of these factors. This includes considering personality and socio-cultural influences that affect rehabilitation success.

Applications

ISO 8548-5:2003 serves as a vital tool for various professionals and organizations involved in limb amputation care and rehabilitation:

  • Clinicians and Rehabilitation Teams
Enables standardized clinical evaluations and documentation to tailor rehabilitation protocols effectively, leading to improved patient outcomes.

  • Prosthetics and Orthotics Specialists
Provides consistent patient profiles that inform prosthetic fitting and orthotic design, increasing comfort and functionality.

  • Healthcare Administrators and Policy Makers
Supplies reliable data on patient characteristics and outcomes for epidemiological studies, resource planning, and healthcare quality improvement initiatives.

  • Research and Education
Facilitates consistent data collection for comparative clinical studies, advancing knowledge in amputation care and rehabilitation practices globally.

Related Standards

ISO 8548-5 is part of a comprehensive series addressing limb deficiencies and associated clinical conditions, closely linked with:

  • ISO 8548-1: Method of describing limb deficiencies present at birth.
  • ISO 8548-2: Method of describing lower limb amputation stumps.
  • ISO 8548-3: Method of describing upper limb amputation stumps.
  • ISO 8548-4: Description of causal conditions leading to amputation.
  • ISO 8549-1 & ISO 8549-2: Vocabulary standards for prosthetics and orthotics terminology.

Together, these standards provide a robust framework for comprehensive documentation, assessment, and communication across the field of prosthetics and orthotics.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 8548-5 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 168, Prosthetics and orthotics.
ISO 8548 consists of the following parts, under the general title Prosthetics and orthotics — Limb deficiencies:
 Part 1: Method of describing limb deficiencies present at birth
 Part 2: Method of describing lower limb amputation stumps
 Part 3: Method of describing upper limb amputation stumps
 Part 4: Description of causal conditions leading to amputation
 Part 5: Description of the clinical condition of the person who has had an amputation

Introduction
The rehabilitation of the person who has had an amputation depends not only on the surgery performed but
also on the causes and pathological condition for which amputation was performed, and on other clinical
conditions and attributes of the person. The various members of the clinic teams in different countries develop
their own nomenclature to record this information. Hence there is a need for an international system to allow
comparisons of clinical practice.
The system is designed to meet the needs of the members of the clinic team in assessing the person and
evaluating treatment. Such

Avant-propos
Directives ISO/IEC, Partie 2.
