Overview

ISO/IEC 15938-7:2003/Amd 4:2008, titled Information technology - Multimedia content description interface - Part 7: Conformance testing - Amendment 4: Improvements to geographic descriptor conformance, is an amendment to the ISO/IEC Multimedia Content Description Interface standard, commonly known as MPEG-7. Developed by ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29, this amendment addresses and improves the conformance requirements for geographic descriptors used in multimedia content metadata. The enhancements introduced in this amendment enable more robust and precise conformance testing for the representation of geographic information in multimedia content, enhancing interoperability and reliability across systems.

Key Topics

  • Geographic Descriptor Conformance: The amendment refines the conformance criteria for multimedia content that incorporates geographical descriptors. These descriptors are used to encode information about a location associated with a multimedia asset.
  • Types of Geographic Descriptors Supported:
    • Point: Represents a single geographic coordinate (longitude, latitude, altitude).
    • Area: Defines a region using multiple coordinates outlining the perimeter.
    • Route: Describes a path or trajectory through a series of points.
  • Accuracy and Datum Attributes: Specifying the accuracy of geographic information and the reference datum employed ensures precise location referencing in metadata.
  • XML Schema Updates: The amendment introduces revised and new XML examples demonstrating best practices for encoding place-related metadata in line with MPEG-7 requirements.

Applications

The improvements to geographic descriptor conformance in ISO/IEC 15938-7:2003/Amd 4:2008 have practical value in various sectors leveraging multimedia content:

  • Multimedia Asset Management: Enables richer and more accurate metadata for media files, facilitating efficient organization, discovery, and retrieval based on location attributes.
  • Broadcasting and Content Delivery: Enhances the ability to distribute and customize content based on geographic relevance, supporting targeted broadcasting and geo-tagged content delivery.
  • Digital Libraries and Archives: Improves cataloging of cultural heritage, news, or scientific materials with precise geographic information, aiding in research, preservation, and access.
  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS): Supports the integration of multimedia content within GIS platforms, where precise geolocation data is essential for spatial analyses.
  • Content Search and Recommendation: Boosts geospatial search capabilities, enabling users to find audio, video, or images linked to specific locations or routes.

Related Standards

Organizations seeking to implement MPEG-7 geographic metadata or conformance testing should also be aware of the following related standards:

  • ISO/IEC 15938 series (MPEG-7): The broader MPEG-7 suite defines the framework for multimedia content description, including parts for schema, descriptions, and conformance requirements.
  • ISO/IEC 15938-7:2003: The core part 7 standard establishes the fundamental methodologies for conformance testing within MPEG-7.
  • ISO 19115 (Geographic Information - Metadata): Supplements multimedia-focused standards by providing a comprehensive model for geographic metadata applicable across domains.
  • ISO/IEC 23000 (MPEG-A - Multimedia Application Formats): Reference for integrating multimedia applications with enhanced metadata functionalities.

ISO/IEC 15938-7:2003/Amd 4:2008 delivers substantial improvements to how geographic data is standardized, tested, and exchanged in multimedia environments. By offering precise conformance criteria and encoding examples, it ensures greater interoperability and reliability for systems that utilize geographic metadata within the globally recognized MPEG-7 framework.

ISO/IEC 15938-7:2003/Amd.4:2008(E)
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) and IEC (the International Electrotechnical
Commission) form the specialized system for worldwide standardization. National bodies that are members of
ISO or IEC participate in the development of International Standards through technical committees
established by the respective organization to deal with particular fields of technical activity. ISO and IEC
technical committees collaborate in fields of mutual interest. Other international organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO and IEC, also take part in the work. In the field of information
technology, ISO and IEC have established a joint technical committee, ISO/IEC JTC 1.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of the joint technical committee is to prepare International Standards. Draft International
Standards adopted by the joint technical committee are circulated to national bodies for voting. Publication as
an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the national bodies casting a vote.
