Overview

ISO/IEC 15938-7:2003/Amd 4:2008 is an important international standard amendment developed by the joint ISO/IEC technical committee focusing on multimedia content description interfaces. This amendment specifically enhances conformance testing related to geographic descriptors within multimedia metadata frameworks. By improving the way defined geographic positions are tested for accuracy and conformance, it supports three main spatial types-Point, Area, and Route-with detailed accuracy parameters.

The amendment strengthens the ISO/IEC 15938-7 standard-which is part of the MPEG-7 multimedia standard-by providing clear conformance guidelines and XML schema examples for geographic descriptors. These improvements ensure consistency and interoperability when encoding geographical descriptions of multimedia content, critical for location-based services, multimedia indexing, and retrieval.

Key Topics

  • Geographic Descriptor Conformance
This amendment introduces refined conformance testing abilities to verify geographical metadata, ensuring they meet required standards for Points, Areas, and Routes. Accuracy and datum specification (such as ITRF) are integral to these tests.

  • Conformance Testing Framework
Detailed conformance testing processes help validate multimedia content descriptions that reference geographic locations. This includes validation against defined XML schema for geographic entities within MPEG-7.

  • XML Schema Enhancements
The document provides updated XML examples demonstrating how to encode geographic positions:

    • Point: Single geographic coordinates with accuracy and altitude.
    • Area: Defined by multiple points outlining a geographic region.
    • Route: A series of points representing a path or route geography.
  • Accuracy Specification
Geographic positions include an accuracy attribute to indicate the precision of the location data, which is critical for reliable multimedia metadata usage and geographic information system (GIS) integration.

Applications

ISO/IEC 15938-7:2003/Amd 4:2008 is highly applicable in various domains where multimedia content is linked to geographical information:

  • Multimedia Indexing and Retrieval
Enhances the ability of systems to accurately tag and retrieve multimedia content based on geographic location descriptors, supporting use cases like digital libraries and media archives.

  • Location-Based Services (LBS)
Provides standardization for geographic metadata allowing LBS applications to utilize multimedia content with precise spatial context such as shooting locations or landmarks.

  • Digital Mapping and GIS Integration
Facilitates the embedding of multimedia metadata in geographic information systems by conforming to standardized geographic descriptors with known accuracy levels.

  • Broadcast and Streaming Media
Supports broadcasters and streaming services by ensuring multimedia content that includes geographic information meets rigorous conformance criteria for location accuracy.

  • Cultural Heritage Documentation
Assists in digitally documenting cultural heritage sites, landmarks, and geographic areas with multimedia content correctly indexed to physical locations.

Related Standards

  • ISO/IEC 15938 (MPEG-7)
The parent standard defining multimedia content description interfaces, which includes part 7 that focuses on conformance testing.

  • ISO/IEC 15938-1 through -14
Other parts of the MPEG-7 series cover description tools, encoding, and applications relevant to multimedia content descriptions.

  • ISO 191xx Series (Geographic Information/Geomatics)
Provides complementary standards for geographic data and location encoding that can integrate with MPEG-7 geographic descriptors.

  • XML Schema Standards
Governs the structure and validation of XML encoded multimedia description data, critical for ensuring the interoperability of geographic descriptors.

ISO/IEC 15938-7:2003/Amd.4:2008(E)
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) and IEC (the International Electrotechnical
Commission) form the specialized system for worldwide standardization. National bodies that are members of
ISO or IEC participate in the development of International Standards through technical committees
established by the respective organization to deal with particular fields of technical activity. ISO and IEC
technical committees collaborate in fields of mutual interest. Other international organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO and IEC, also take part in the work. In the field of information
technology, ISO and IEC have established a joint technical committee, ISO/IEC JTC 1.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of the joint technical committee is to prepare International Standards. Draft International
Standards adopted by the joint technical committee are circulated to national bodies for voting. Publication as
an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the national bodies casting a vote.
