Overview

ISO 603-11:1999 is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies dimensions for bonded abrasive products, specifically focusing on hand finishing sticks (also referred to as hand stones). This standard is part 11 of the broader ISO 603 series, which addresses dimensions for various bonded abrasive tools used in grinding, sharpening, and finishing processes.

The standard defines nominal dimensions in millimeters for hand finishing sticks used to generate, shape, and sharpen surfaces on tools and workpieces held manually. It supports manufacturers, users, and quality control professionals by providing a clear dimensional framework for these abrasive products, ensuring consistency, interchangeability, and reliability in industrial and workshop environments.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application
ISO 603-11 covers Type 90 bonded abrasive products-hand finishing sticks used primarily for hand-guided surface generation and sharpening of tools. These products are designed to be held and manipulated manually during use.

  • Dimensional Specifications
The standard outlines precise nominal dimensions for various types and shapes of hand finishing sticks. These include parameters such as length (L), width (B), height (C), and other relevant measurements, presented in a clear tabular format for types 9010, 9011, 9020, 9030, and 9040.

  • Designation Rules
The standard provides a systematic method to designate abrasive products, combining product type, dimensions, abrasive nature, grain size, and bonding material. An example designation might look like:
    Hand finishing stick ISO 603-11 - 9020 - 13 x 100 - C 150V

  • Marking and Specifications
Marking requirements and additional product specifications align with ISO 525, which defines general requirements for bonded abrasive products. This ensures product traceability and compliance with quality standards.

  • Normative References
ISO 603-11 refers to other relevant standards such as ISO 525 for general abrasive product requirements and ISO 8486 parts for abrasive grain size distribution.

Applications

ISO 603-11:1999 plays a crucial role in industries and workshops where manual precision finishing and sharpening are essential. Its key applications include:

  • Tool Sharpening and Maintenance
Hand finishing sticks standardized under ISO 603-11 are widely used for sharpening cutting tools, blades, and measuring instruments requiring high-precision edges.

  • Surface Finishing
These bonded abrasives facilitate fine surface generation and finishing on metal, wood, ceramics, and composite materials where controlled manual finish is required.

  • Quality Control and Manufacturing
Manufacturers of bonded abrasives use this standard to produce hand finishing sticks that meet international dimension requirements, ensuring compatibility with tooling systems and customer expectations.

  • Training and Safety Compliance
Standardized hand finishing sticks support safe and effective usage, providing consistency for workers and reducing the risk associated with improperly sized abrasives.

Related Standards

  • ISO 525:1999 - General Requirements for Bonded Abrasive Products
Provides foundational specifications including marking, testing, and quality control applicable to all bonded abrasive tools.

  • ISO 8486-1 & ISO 8486-2 - Abrasive Grain Size Distribution
Defines methods for determining and designating abrasive grain distribution (macrograins and micrograins), key for product characterization.

  • Other ISO 603 Parts
The ISO 603 series includes parts for different bonded abrasive product types such as grinding wheels, sharpening stones, and superfinishing sticks, addressing various applications and machine types.

By adhering to ISO 603-11:1999, manufacturers and users ensure that hand finishing sticks meet internationally recognized quality and dimension standards, facilitating interoperability, safety, and optimal performance in abrasive finishing tasks. This standard supports both precision tool maintenance and diverse surface treatment operations crucial to industrial productivity and craftsmanship.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.
Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
International Standard ISO 603-11 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 29, Small tools, subcommittee
SC 5, Grinding wheels and abrasives.
