Foreword

ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards

bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out

through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical

committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International

This document was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 38, Textiles, Subcommittee SC 2, Cleansing,

finishing and water resistance tests, in collaboration with the European Committee for Standardization

(CEN) Technical Committee CEN/TC 248, Textiles, in accordance with the Agreement on technical

cooperation between ISO and CEN (Vienna Agreement).

This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition (ISO 3758:2012), which has been technically

revised.
The main changes are as follows:
— some exemptions have been introduced into the Scope (see Clause 1);

— a new symbol has been introduced for wash by hand at ambient temperature Table 1;

— a new symbol has been introduced for ironing without steam in Table 5;
— new solvents have been introduced in Table 6;

— graphical changes have been introduced in symbols of wash by hand, do not wash (in Table 1), do not

bleach (in Table 2) and do not iron (in Table 5), in order to align them to the GINETEX ones;

— three alternative examples of use of symbols have been introduced in 5.3;

— a new Annex D, “Adaptation of registered graphical symbols for use in practice”, has been added.

Introduction

The variety of fibres, materials and finishes used in the production of textile articles, together with

the development of cleansing and care procedures, makes it difficult and often impossible to decide

on the appropriate cleansing and care treatment for each article simply by inspecting it. To help those

who have to make such a decision (principally the consumer but also launderers and dry cleaners),

this code of graphic symbols was established, based on the International Association for Textile Care

Labelling (GINETEX) care labelling system, for use in the permanent marking of textile articles with

information on their care in use as an International Standard in 1991. In certain countries, GINETEX

has the intellectual property right of the five main symbols specified in this document.

In order to make this code “easily understandable and recognizable” for the consumer world-wide,

symbols have been limited as to types and numbers as far as practicable.

The first, second and third editions of this document published in 1991, 2005 and 2012, respectively,

were a result of a compromise between two requirements: being simple enough to be understood by

users in all countries, irrespective of the language they speak, yet providing as much information as

possible to prevent irreversible damage being caused during care treatments. This document has been

made sufficiently flexible to accommodate the needs of practically all who wish to use it. This has been

achieved by providing a sufficiently large selection of care treatments, from which the user may select

the most suitable for any particular need.

The revision was necessary to reflect current cleansing practices including technical developments and

to introduce new alternative solvents for dry cleaning. Furthermore, modifications in the description of

care processes have been introduced in order to avoid hindering process development.

The international care label used in this document gives care instructions using a sequence of symbols

in the order of five main treatments: washing, bleaching, drying, ironing and professional textile care.

Annex A has been developed to give a description of characteristics and available test methods to

ensure the correct selection of care symbols.
Annex B deals with regional and national requirements in care labelling.

When deemed necessary, words may be used as well as the symbols. Examples are included in Annex C.

Annex D has been introduced to highlight the graphical difference between some symbols in this

document and the ones registered in ISO 7000 for use in practice.

1 Scope

This document establishes a system of graphic symbols, intended for use in the marking of textile

articles, and for providing information on the most severe treatments that do not cause irreversible

damage to the article during the textile care process, and specifies the use of these symbols in care

labelling.
This document is applicable to all textile articles, except:
— non­removable covers of upholstered furniture;
— non­removable covers of mattresses;
— carpets and rugs which require professional carpet cleaning.

These products are excluded due to specific cleaning processes not specified in this document.

The graphical symbols described in this document are intended to give care information to the end

user.

The following domestic treatments are covered: washing, bleaching, drying and ironing. Professional

textile care treatments in dry and wet cleaning, but excluding industrial laundering and professional

carpet cleaning, are also covered. However, it is recognized that information imparted by the domestic

symbols will also be of assistance to the professional cleaner and launderer.
NOTE Symbols for industrial laundering can be found in ISO 30023.

4 Description and definition of symbols
4.1 Symbols
4.1.1 General
Five main symbols and some additional descriptions are provided.

The graphical symbols in this document are based on registered trademark graphical symbols of

GINETEX (see Introduction). These graphical symbols are registered in ISO 7000, however with

differences for certain graphical symbols. In case of graphical differences between those of this

document and ISO 7000, the graphical symbols of this document shall be applied (see Annex D).

4.1.3 Additional descriptives
4.1.3.1 Mild treatment

A bar, as shown in Figure 6, under the symbol means that the treatment should be milder than indicated

by the same symbol without a bar, e.g.:
— for machine washing or dry cleaning, reduced agitation;
— for hand washing, reduced temperature;
— for dry cleaning, reduced drying temperature.

4.1.3.2 Very mild treatment

A double bar, as shown in Figure 7, under the symbol describes a very mild process, e.g. much reduced

agitation.

4.1.3.3 Temperature of treatment

The temperature in connection with the symbol in 4.1.2.1 is given as a figure representing degrees

Celsius (30, 40, 50, 60, 70 or 95) without the designation “°C”.

Dots, as shown in Figure 8, are used to define the temperature of the treatment with the symbols for

drying (4.1.2.3) and ironing and pressing (4.1.2.4). The definitions of the number of dots in each case

are given in Tables 3 and 5 for symbols.

4.1.3.4 Treatment not permitted

The St. Andrew's cross superimposed on any of the five main symbols means that the treatment

represented by that symbol shall not be permitted.

4.2 Washing

The washtub symbolizes the domestic washing treatment (by hand or machine) (see Figure 1). It is

used to convey information regarding the maximum washing temperature and the maximum washing

process severity, as shown in Table 1.

4.4 Drying
4.4.1 General

The square symbolizes the drying after domestic washing process (see Figure 3 and Tables 3 and 4).

4.4.2 Tumble drying

The circle in a square symbolizes tumble drying after a washing process, with the maximum

temperature setting being indicated by the use of one or two dots placed within the symbol, as shown

in Table 3.

The circle (see Figure 5) symbolizes the dry cleaning and wet cleaning process for textile articles

5 Application and use of symbols
5.1 Application of symbols

The symbols defined in Clause 4 shall, when possible, be placed either directly on the article (i.e.

marked) or directly on the label.

Labels shall be made of suitable material with resistance to the care treatment indicated on the label at

least equal to that of the article on which they are placed.

Symbols shall be large enough to be easy to read and remain readable throughout the lifetime of the

article.

When possible, labels shall be permanently affixed to the textile material, in such a way that they can

be easily located and read by the consumer and that no part of the symbols is hidden. Where this is not

Foreword

ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national

standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally

carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a

This document was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 38, Textiles, Subcommittee SC 2,

Cleansing, finishing and water resistance tests, in collaboration with the European Committee for

Standardization (CEN) Technical Committee CEN/TC 248, Textiles, in accordance with the Agreement

on technical cooperation between ISO and CEN (Vienna Agreement).

This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition (ISO 3758:2012), of which it constitutes a

minor revision. The changes are as follows:which has been technically revised.
The main changes are as follows:
— some exemptions have been introduced into the Scope (see Clause 1);

— a new symbol has been introduced for wash by hand at ambient temperature Table 1;

— a new symbol has been introduced for ironing without steam in Table 5;
— new solvents have been introduced in Table 6;

— graphical changes have been introduced in symbols of wash by hand, do not wash (in Table 1), do

not bleach (in Table 2) and do not iron (in Table 5), in order to align them to the GINETEX ones;

— three alternative examples of use of symbols have been introduced in 5.3;

— a new Annex D,“, “Adaptation of registered graphical symbols for use in practice”, has been added.

Introduction

The variety of fibres, materials and finishes used in the production of textile articles, together with the

development of cleansing and care procedures, makes it difficult and often impossible to decide on the

appropriate cleansing and care treatment for each article simply by inspecting it. To help those who

have to make such a decision (principally the consumer but also launderers and dry cleaners), this code

of graphic symbols was established, based on the International Association for Textile Care Labelling

(GINETEX) care labelling system, for use in the permanent marking of textile articles with information

on their care in use as an International Standard in 1991. In certain countries, GINETEX has the

intellectual property right of the five main symbols specified in this document.

In order to make this code “easily understandable and recognizable” for the consumer world-wide,

symbols have been limited as to types and numbers as far as practicable.

The first, second and third editions of this document published in 1991, 2005 and 2012, respectively,

were a result of a compromise between two requirements: being simple enough to be understood by

users in all countries, irrespective of the language they speak, yet providing as much information as

possible to prevent irreversible damage being caused during care treatments. This document has been

made sufficiently flexible to accommodate the needs of practically all who wish to use it. This has been

achieved by providing a sufficiently large selection of care treatments, from which the user may select

the most suitable for any particular need.

The revision was necessary to reflect current cleansing practices including technical developments and

to introduce new alternative solvents for dry cleaning. Furthermore, modifications in the description of

care processes have been introduced in order to avoid hindering process development.

The international care label used in this document gives care instructions using a sequence of symbols

in the order of five main treatments: washing, bleaching, drying, ironing and professional textile care.

Annex A has been developed to give a description of characteristics and available test methods to

ensure the correct selection of care symbols.
Annex B deals with regional and national requirements in care labelling.

When deemed necessary, words may be used as well as the symbols. Examples are included in Annex C.

Annex D has been introduced to highlight the graphical difference between some symbols in this

document and the oneones registered in the ISO 7000 for use in practice.

1 Scope

This document establishes a system of graphic symbols, intended for use in the marking of textile

articles, and for providing information on the most severe treatments that do not cause irreversible

damage to the article during the textile care process, and specifies the use of these symbols in care

labelling.
This document is applicable to all textile articles, except:
— non-removable covers of upholstered furniture;
— non-removable covers of mattresses;
— carpets and rugs which require professional carpet cleaning.

These products are excluded due to specific cleaning processes not specified in this document.

The graphical symbols described in this document are intended to give care information to the end user.

The following domestic treatments are covered: washing, bleaching, drying and ironing. Professional

textile care treatments in dry and wet cleaning, but excluding industrial laundering and professional

carpet cleaning, are also covered. However, it is recognized that information imparted by the domestic

symbols will also be of assistance to the professional cleaner and launderer.
NOTE Symbols for industrial laundering can be found in ISO 30023.

Note 1 to entry: Oxygen bleach products encompass a wide range of different activated and non-activated

lower washing temperatures.

4.1 Symbols
4.1.1 General
Five main symbols and some additional descriptivesdescriptions are provided.

The graphical symbols in this document are based on registered trademark graphical symbols of

GINETEX (see Introduction). These graphical symbols are registered in ISO 7000, however with

differences for certain graphical symbols. In case of graphical differences between those of this

document and ISO 7000, the graphical symbols of this document shall be applied (see Annex D).

NOTE The correction of the concerned graphical symbols in ISO 7000 to be requested after

publication of this edition.

4.1.7.14.1.3.1 Mild treatment

A bar, as shown in Figure 6, under the symbol means that the treatment should be milder than

indicated by the same symbol without a bar, e.g.:
— for machine washing or dry cleaning, reduced agitation;
— for hand washing, reduced temperature;
— for dry cleaning, reduced drying temperature.

4.1.7.24.1.3.2 Very mild treatment

A double bar, as shown in Figure 7, under the symbol describes a very mild process, e.g. much reduced

agitation.

4.1.7.34.1.3.3 Temperature of treatment

The temperature in connection with the symbol in 4.1.2.1 is given as a figure representing degrees

Celsius (30, 40, 50, 60, 70 or 95) without the designation “°C”.

Dots, as shown in Figure 8, are used to define the temperature of the treatment with the symbols for

drying (4.1.2.3) and ironing and pressing (4.1.2.4). The definitions of the number of dots in each case

are given in Tables 3 and 5 for symbols.

4.1.7.44.1.3.4 Treatment not permitted

The St. Andrew's cross superimposed on any of the five main symbols means that the treatment

represented by that symbol shall not be permitted.

4.2 Washing

The washtub symbolizes the domestic washing treatment (by hand or machine) (see Figure 1). It is

used to convey information regarding the maximum washing temperature and the maximum washing

process severity, as shown in Table 1.

4.4.1 General

The square symbolizes the drying after domestic washing process (see Figure 3 and Tables 3 and 4).

4.4.2 Tumble drying

The circle in a square symbolizes tumble drying after a washing process, with the maximum

temperature setting being indicated by the use of one or two dots placed within the symbol, as shown in

Table 3.

L’ISO (Organisation internationale de normalisation) est une fédération mondiale d’organismes

nationaux de normalisation (comités membres de l’ISO). L’élaboration des Normes internationales est

Le présent document a été élaboré par le comité technique ISO/TC 38, Textiles, sous-comité SC 2,

Méthodes d’entretien, de finition et de résistance à l’eau, en collaboration avec le comité technique CEN/

TC 248, Textiles, du Comité européen de normalisation (CEN), conformément à l’Accord de coopération

technique entre l’ISO et le CEN (Accord de Vienne).

Cette quatrième édition annule et remplace la troisième édition (ISO 3758:2012), qui a fait l’objet d’une

révision technique.
Les principales modifications sont les suivantes:

— certaines exemptions ont été introduites dans le Domaine d’application (voir Article 1);

— un nouveau symbole a été introduit pour le lavage à la main à température ambiante dans le

Tableau 1;

— un nouveau symbole a été introduit pour le repassage sans vapeur dans le Tableau 5;

— de nouveaux solvants ont été introduits dans le Tableau 6;

— des modifications graphiques ont été apportées aux symboles «lavage à la main», «ne pas laver»

(dans le Tableau 1), «ne pas blanchir» (dans le Tableau 2) et «ne pas repasser» (dans le Tableau 5)

afin qu’ils soient alignés avec les symboles GINETEX;
— trois exemples différents d’emploi des symboles ont été introduits en 5.3;

— une nouvelle Annexe D, intitulée «Adaptation des symboles graphiques enregistrés pour une

utilisation dans la pratique», a été ajoutée.

Introduction

La diversité des fibres, des matières et des traitements de finition utilisés dans la production des

articles textiles de même que l’évolution des procédés de nettoyage et d’entretien rendent difficile et

souvent impossible le choix du traitement de nettoyage et d’entretien approprié à chaque article par un

simple examen de l’article concerné. En vue d’aider ceux qui ont à effectuer ce choix (principalement le

consommateur, mais aussi les blanchisseurs et les teinturiers), le présent code de symboles graphiques

est fondé sur le Groupement international d’étiquetage pour l’entretien des textiles (GINETEX) pour

être utilisé sur le marquage permanent des articles textiles avec les informations concernant l’entretien

qui font l’objet d’une Norme internationale depuis 1991. Dans certains pays, GINETEX possède les droits

de propriété intellectuelle concernant les cinq principaux symboles spécifiés dans le présent document.

Pour que ce code soit facile à comprendre et à reconnaître pour les consommateurs du monde entier,

le type et le nombre de symboles ont été limités, dans la mesure du possible.

Les première, deuxième et troisième éditions du présent document, publiées respectivement en 1991,

2005 et 2012, étaient le résultat d’un compromis entre deux exigences: d’une part, être suffisamment

simple pour être comprise par les utilisateurs de tous les pays, quelle que soit leur langue, et d’autre part

fournir une information aussi complète que possible pour prévenir tout dommage irréversible causé

pendant les traitements d’entretien. Le présent document a été conçu de façon suffisamment souple

pour convenir aux besoins de pratiquement toutes les personnes qui voudraient en faire usage. Ce but a

été atteint par un choix suffisamment vaste des traitements d’entretien parmi lesquels l’utilisateur peut

choisir celui qui convient le mieux pour chaque besoin spécifique.

Cette révision s’est révélée nécessaire pour refléter les procédés de nettoyage actuels, compte tenu

des évolutions techniques, et pour introduire de nouveaux solvants applicables au nettoyage à sec. De

plus, la description des procédés d’entretien a été modifiée pour lever les obstacles éventuellement

rencontrés lors de la mise au point du processus.

L’étiquetage d’entretien international utilisé dans le présent document donne des instructions

d’entretien utilisant une séquence de symboles dans l’ordre des cinq principaux traitements: lavage,

blanchiment, séchage, repassage et nettoyage par un professionnel.

L’Annexe A a été élaborée pour donner une description des caractéristiques et des méthodes d’essai

disponibles pour permettre de choisir correctement les symboles d’entretien.

L’Annexe B traite des exigences régionales et nationales en matière d’étiquetage d’entretien.

Si cela est jugé nécessaire, des mentions complémentaires peuvent être ajoutées aux symboles.

Des exemples sont donnés à l’Annexe C. L’Annexe D a été introduite pour mettre en évidence les

différences graphiques entre certains symboles du présent document et ceux enregistrés dans

l’ISO 7000 dans la perspective d’une utilisation dans la pratique.

Textiles — Code d'étiquetage d'entretien au moyen de
symboles
1 Domaine d’application

Le présent document établit un système de symboles graphiques destinés au marquage des articles

textiles, en donnant des informations sur le traitement le plus sévère possible sans détérioration

irréversible de l’article pendant l’entretien du textile, et précise l’utilisation de ces symboles dans

l’étiquetage d’entretien.
Le présent document s’applique à tous les articles textiles, à l’exception:
— des housses non amovibles des meubles rembourrés;
— des housses non amovibles des matelas;

— des revêtements de sol textiles et tapis qui requièrent un nettoyage professionnel.

Ces produits sont exclus en raison de traitements de nettoyage spécifiques non spécifiés dans le présent

document.

Les symboles graphiques décrits dans le présent document sont destinés à fournir des informations

d’entretien à l’utilisateur final.

Les traitements ménagers suivants sont pris en considération: lavage, blanchiment, séchage et repassage.

Les traitements d’entretien des textiles par des professionnels, par nettoyage à sec ou nettoyage à

l’eau sont également couverts, à l’exclusion du blanchissage industriel et du nettoyage professionnel

des revêtements de sol textiles. Toutefois, il est admis que les informations fournies par les symboles

domestiques seront également utiles aux professionnels de la teinturerie et de la blanchisserie.

Cinq symboles de base et quelques descriptions graphiques supplémentaires sont fournis.

Les symboles graphiques du présent document sont fondés sur les symboles graphiques du GINETEX,

qui sont des marques déposées enregistrées (voir l’Introduction). Ces symboles graphiques sont

enregistrés dans l’ISO 7000, avec toutefois quelques différences pour certains d’entre eux. En présence

d’une divergence graphique entre les symboles du présent document et ceux de l’ISO 7000, les symboles

du présent document doivent être appliqués (voir l’Annexe D).

4.1.3 Descriptifs graphiques supplémentaires
4.1.3.1 Traitement modéré

Une barre sous le symbole, comme indiqué à la Figure 6, signifie qu’il convient que le traitement soit

modéré en comparaison du traitement indiqué par le même symbole sans barre, par exemple:

— pour le lavage en machine ou le nettoyage à sec, une agitation réduite;
— pour le lavage à la main, une température réduite;
— pour le nettoyage à sec, une température de séchage réduite.

4.1.3.2 Traitement très modéré

Une double barre sous le symbole, comme indiqué à la Figure 7, illustre un traitement très modéré,

par exemple une agitation très réduite.

4.1.3.3 Température de traitement

La température correspondant au symbole de 4.1.2.1 est donnée par un chiffre en degrés Celsius (30, 40,

50, 60, 70 ou 95) sans la désignation «°C».

Les points, comme indiqué à la Figure 8, servent à définir le niveau de température du traitement,

associé aux symboles de séchage (4.1.2.3) et de repassage et pressage (4.1.2.4). Les Tableaux 3 et 5

fournissent les définitions correspondant au nombre de points pour chaque cas.

4.1.3.4 Traitement interdit

La croix de Saint-André placée sur l’un des cinq symboles de base indique que le traitement représenté

par ce symbole ne doit pas être appliqué.

4.2 Lavage

Le cuvier symbolise le traitement de lavage ménager (à la main ou à la machine) (voir Figure 1). Il

est utilisé pour donner des informations concernant la température maximale de lavage ainsi que la

sévérité maximale du procédé de lavage, comme indiqué dans le Tableau 1.
