Overview

ISO 13592:1998 is an international standard focused on backfire flame control for petrol engines used in small craft. Developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), this standard specifies minimum requirements for the design, construction, testing, and marking of engines and devices intended to prevent the propagation of backfire flames from inboard petrol engines to the surrounding atmosphere. It applies to small craft with hull lengths up to and including 24 meters.

The standard ensures enhanced safety on small craft by controlling and mitigating backfire flame risks, which can lead to dangerous fires or explosions if not properly managed. ISO 13592:1998 provides the technical criteria to verify that flame arresters and backfire prevention devices operate reliably under various conditions.

Key Topics

  • Construction requirements

    • Engines must be designed or equipped with devices to prevent backfire flame propagation through the air intake system.
    • Flame arresters must be securely fastened, allow inspection and cleaning, and have no openings for flame passage.
    • Component parts should be designed for correct assembly without misalignment that could impair effectiveness.
  • Testing methods

    • Includes physical examination for manufacturing conformity and absence of bypass openings.
    • Comprehensive vibration tests simulate operational stresses.
    • Shock tests ensure durability against impact forces.
    • Explosion tests simulate backfire conditions with a propane/air mixture to verify flame arrester effectiveness over 50 consecutive cycles.
    • Corrosion resistance tests (salt spray test per ISO 9227:1990) ensure long-term durability.
  • Marking and documentation

    • Compliant flame arresters must be permanently marked with "ISO 13592 MARINE," manufacturer information, and model/type numbers.
    • Engine operation manuals are required to include detailed information on flame arrester function, safety implications, and maintenance instructions.

Applications

ISO 13592:1998 is vital for:

  • Small craft manufacturers designing petrol engine air intake systems that require flame control to improve vessel safety.
  • Engine and flame arrester manufacturers needing to certify their products meet international safety and performance standards.
  • Marine safety inspectors and certification bodies validating compliance of engines installed in pleasure boats and other small vessels.
  • Boat owners and operators seeking reliable safety devices for inboard petrol engines to prevent backfire-related hazards.

Adhering to ISO 13592 helps reduce risks associated with backfire flames, minimizing onboard fire hazards and protecting crew, passengers, and assets.

Related Standards

  • ISO 9227:1990 - Corrosion tests in artificial atmospheres - Salt spray tests. This normative reference is integrated within ISO 13592 for evaluating the corrosion resistance of flame arresters and engine components.

  • Other ISO standards related to small craft, marine engine safety, and combustion engine emissions may complement ISO 13592 in ensuring overall marine vessel safety and environmental compliance.

By implementing ISO 13592:1998 compliant backfire flame control systems, the marine industry enhances inboard petrol engine safety, contributing to safer navigation and operation of small craft worldwide.
