Overview

ISO 1686:1976 is an international standard titled "Sodium and potassium silicates for industrial use - Samples and methods of test - General" issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). This standard specifies the general principles and procedures for sampling and testing sodium and potassium silicates used in various industrial applications. It covers methods applicable to silicates in solution or soluble in boiling water, as well as special treatments for solid silicate chemicals that are not easily soluble.

The standard emphasizes careful handling to avoid sample contamination-particularly moisture and carbon dioxide absorption-and mandates analytical-grade reagents for accurate chemical analysis. ISO 1686:1976 supersedes the previous ISO Recommendation R 1686-1970 and remains a fundamental document for quality control and standardization in silicate-related industries.

Key Topics

  • Sample Preparation
Guidelines specify crushing of solid silicate lumps and precautions to prevent moisture and carbon dioxide uptake. Special preliminary treatment is required for solids not readily soluble in boiling water.

  • Test Conditions
All testing, dilutions, titrations, and measurements must be conducted at approximately 20 °C, ensuring uniformity for volume-related determinations.

  • Applicable Materials
The methods apply directly to sodium and potassium silicate solutions or materials soluble in boiling water. Non-soluble solids require preparation according to ISO 2122.

  • Reagent Quality
Only analytical-grade reagents free of impurities should be used to avoid inaccurate test results.

  • Sample Size
For comprehensive testing, a representative sample weighing approximately 750 g is recommended.

Applications

ISO 1686:1976 serves as a foundational standard for industries that manufacture or utilize sodium and potassium silicates, including:

  • Chemical manufacturing
Ensures consistency and quality in raw materials for industrial chemical processes.

  • Water treatment
Provides standardized testing for silicates used in water purification and conditioning agents.

  • Detergents and soaps
Supports quality control of silicates used as builders and additives.

  • Construction materials
Enables reliable testing of silicate additives in cement, concrete, and refractory products.

  • Adhesives and sealants
Assists in monitoring silicate-based formulations for industrial adhesives.

By implementing the standardized sampling and testing procedures from ISO 1686, industries can assure product conformity and enhance process reliability.

Related Standards

ISO 1686:1976 is part of a comprehensive suite of ISO standards concerning sodium and potassium silicates, including:

  • ISO 1687 - Determination of density at 20 °C using hydrometer and pyknometer methods.
  • ISO 1688 - Gravimetric determination of dry matter content.
  • ISO 1689 - Calculation of sodium or potassium oxide to silica ratio.
  • ISO 1690 - Gravimetric determination of silica content by insolubilization.
  • ISO 1691 - Gas-volumetric determination of carbonate content.
  • ISO 1692 - Titrimetric determination of total alkalinity.
  • ISO 2122 - Preparation of solutions for products not easily soluble in boiling water.
  • ISO 2123 - Measurement of dynamic viscosity.
  • ISO 2124 - Titrimetric determination of silica content.
  • ISO 3200 - Determination of sulphate content by photometric method.
  • ISO 3201 - Determination of iron content.

These interconnected standards collectively support thorough analysis and quality assurance of sodium and potassium silicate materials, promoting safety, reliability, and industrial efficiency.

FOREWORD
IS0 (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation
of national standards institutes (IS0 Member Bodies). The work of developing
International Standards is carried out through IS0 Technical Committees. Every
Member Body interested in a subject for which a Technical Committee has been set
up has the right to be represented on that Committee. International organizations,
governmental and nongovernmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
Draft International Standards adopted by the Technical Committees are circulated
to the Member Bodies for approval before their acceptance as International
Standards by the IS0 Council.
Prior to 1972, the results of the work of the Technical Committees were published
as IS0 Recommendations; these documents are now in the process of being
transformed into International Standards. As part of this process, Technical
Committee ISO/TC 47 has reviewed IS0 Recommendation R 1686 and found it
technically suitable for transformation. International Standard IS0 1686 therefore
replaces IS0 Recommendation R 1686-1970 to which it is technically identical.
