Overview

ISO/IEC 15938-7:2003/Amd 5:2010 is an amendment to the international standard for multimedia content description interfaces, specifically focusing on conformance testing for image signature tools. Part of the MPEG-7 standard series, this amendment enhances the testing framework by defining rigorous conformance criteria for image signature extractors. It ensures that implementations of image signature extraction methods meet the required specifications, improving reliability and interoperability across multimedia applications.

This standard is published by ISO and IEC under their joint technical committee ISO/IEC JTC 1, Subcommittee SC 29, which specializes in coding of audio, picture, multimedia, and hypermedia information. The amendment supports global harmonization of multimedia technology by providing a structured approach to verifying image signature extraction tools.

Key Topics

  • Conformance Testing for Image Signature Tools
This amendment introduces specific conformance testing procedures for image signature extractors. These tools generate descriptors that summarize key visual features of images, enabling efficient search, retrieval, and analysis.

  • Global and Local Image Signature Components
The testing framework distinguishes between global signature components (512-bit segments named GlobalSignatureA and GlobalSignatureB) and local signature components (smaller 60-bit signatures associated with spatial coordinates within the image). Both sets must closely match reference signatures within defined error thresholds for conformance.

  • Test Image Dataset
The amendment defines a standard dataset of 625 test images used in conformance testing. Each image is accompanied by a reference image signature descriptor for comparison.

  • Comparison Criteria

    • Global components: No more than 16 bits can differ out of 512 for each segment.
    • Local components: A spatial correspondence is established between local signatures based on their X and Y coordinates, and no more than 3 bits may differ out of 60 for each matched pair. At least 78 out of 80 local signatures must meet this criterion.

Applications

  • Multimedia Search and Retrieval
Accurate image signature extraction plays a vital role in content-based image retrieval systems, allowing fast and reliable matching of images in large multimedia databases.

  • Digital Rights Management (DRM)
Image signatures can be used to verify authenticity and detect unauthorized copies, thus supporting copyright protection mechanisms.

  • Content Filtering and Moderation
Image signatures help identify specific visual content patterns to enforce content policies in social platforms and media services.

  • Multimedia Indexing
Tools implementing this standard assist in indexing vast multimedia collections, making content easier to organize and access.

Related Standards

  • ISO/IEC 15938 (MPEG-7 Multimedia Content Description Interface)
The parent standard defining multimedia content description tools, including the image signature descriptor referenced by this amendment.

  • ISO/IEC 15938-3
Specifies audiovisual description tools, including extraction methods for various descriptors like image signatures.

  • ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29 Standards
Covers coding and transmission standards for audio, video, and multimedia data, providing the broader framework within which this amendment operates.

ISO/IEC 15938-7:2003/Amd 5:2010 sets clear guidelines and conformance tests for developers and implementers of image signature extraction tools, promoting robust and interoperable multimedia content description. Adhering to this amendment ensures consistency, accuracy, and quality in the extraction of image signatures, driving forward innovation in multimedia indexing, retrieval, and content analysis.

ISO/IEC 15938-7:2003/Amd.5:2010(E)
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) and IEC (the International Electrotechnical
Commission) form the specialized system for worldwide standardization. National bodies that are members of
ISO or IEC participate in the development of International Standards through technical committees
established by the respective organization to deal with particular fields of technical activity. ISO and IEC
technical committees collaborate in fields of mutual interest. Other international organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO and IEC, also take part in the work. In the field of information
technology, ISO and IEC have established a joint technical committee, ISO/IEC JTC 1.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of the joint technical committee is to prepare International Standards. Draft International
Standards adopted by the joint technical committee are circulated to national bodies for voting. Publication as
an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the national bodies casting a vote.
