BRIEF HISTORY
The IS0 Recommendation R 1907, Cresylic acid and xylenols for industrial use - Determination ofresidue on
distillation. was drawn up by Technical Committee ISO/TC 47, Chemistry. the Secretariat of which is held by the Ente
Nazionale ltaliano di Unificazione (UNI).
Work on this question led to the adoption of Draft IS0 Recommendation No. 1907. which was circulated to all
the IS0 Member Bodies for enquiry in November 1969. It was approved, subject to a few modifications of an editorial
nature, by the following Member Bodies :

FOR INDUSTRIAL USE
DETERMINATION OF RESIDUE ON DISTILLATION
WARNING. These materials burn the skin and can be absorbed into the system through the skin. It is essential for
the sampler to wear protective gloves, for example of polyvinyl chloride, and also a face shield. Inhalation of the
vapours from hot material is to be avoided.
1. SCOPE AND FIELD OF APPLICATION
This IS0 Recommendation describes a method for the determination of residue on distillation of cresylic acid of
high rn-cresol content, cresylic acid of high o-cresol content and xylenols for industrial use.
2. SAMPLING
Apply the principles given in IS0 Recommendation R . . .*. The following principles should also be observed :
Place the laboratory sample representative of the material taken from the bulk in a clean, dry, dark-coloured,
glass-stoppered bottle of such a size that it is nearly filled by the sample. If it is necessary to seal this bottle, care
should be taken to avoid contaminating the contents.
3. PRINCIPLE
Distillation of a known mass of the sample under carefully controlled conditions and determination of the mass
of residue obtained.
Sampling of chemical products will form the subject of a future IS0 Recommendation.

La Recommandation ISO/R 1907, Acide crésilique et xylénols à usage industriel - Détermination du résidu
de distillation, a été élaborée par le Comité Technique ISO/TC 47, Chimie, dont le Secrétariat est assuré par l’Ente
Nazionale Italian0 di Unificazione (UNI).
Les travaux relatifs à cette question aboutirent à l’adoption du Projet de Recommandation IS0 No 1907 qui
fut soumis, en novembre 1969, à l’enquête de tous les Comités Membres de I’ISO. 11 fut approuvé, sous réserve de
quelques modifications d’ordre rédactionnel, par les Comités Membres suivants :

DÉTERMINATION DU RÉSIDU DE DISTILLATION
AVERTISSEMENT. Ces produits brûlent la peau et peuvent être absorbés à travers la peau. I1 est essentiel, pour
l’échantillonneur, de porter des gants de protection, de préférence en polychlorure de vinyle, ainsi qu’un masque.
L’inhalation de vapeurs provenant du produit chauffé doit être évitée.
1. OBJET ET DOMAINE D’APPLICATION
La présente Recommandation IS0 décrit une méthode de détermination du résidu de distillation de l’acide
crésilique à forte teneur en rn-crésol, de l’acide crésilique à forte teneur en o-crésol et des xylénols, à usage
industriel.
2. ÉCHANTILLONNAGE
Appliquer les modalités décrites dans la Recommandation ISO/R . . .*. Toutefois, les modalités indiquées ci-après
devront être respectées.
Introduire l’échantillon pour laboratoire, représentatif du produit prélevé sur l’échantillon global, dans un flacon
en verre, de couleur sombre, à bouchon rodé, propre et sec, de contenance telle qu’il soit presque entièrement
rempli par l’échantillon. S’il est nécessaire de sceller ce flacon, prendre soin d’éviter tout risque de contamination
de son contenu.
3. PRINCIPE
Distillation d’une masse connue d’échantillon dans des conditions soigneusement contrôlées et détermination de
la masse de résidu obtenu.
* L’échantillonnage des produits chimiques fera l’objet d’une Recommandation IS0 ultérieure.
