Overview
SIST EN 14959:2006 is a European standard that specifies a reliable test method for determining the resistance to fraying of touch and close fasteners-commonly known as hook-and-loop fasteners-after washing. This document is crucial for manufacturers, quality assurance professionals, and laboratories who need to assess the durability and longevity of fastening systems used in clothing and textile products, particularly those subject to repeated laundering. Published by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST), it aligns with the harmonized European Standard EN 14959:2006.
Key Topics
- Resistance to Fraying: Focuses on evaluating how well touch and close fasteners withstand edge fraying after being washed, which can affect both aesthetic and functional qualities.
- Standardized Testing Procedure: Describes precise specimen preparation, conditioning, washing cycles, drying, and evaluation methods to ensure repeatable and comparable results.
- Relevance for Product Reliability: Addresses how fraying can compromise fastening strength, garment safety, and product lifespan.
- Reporting Requirements: Outlines the essential information to be included in test reports for traceability and quality control purposes.
Applications
SIST EN 14959:2006 is widely applicable in several areas of the textile and garment industry, particularly where touch and close fasteners are exposed to repeated domestic or industrial washing processes. Its uses include:
- Apparel Manufacturing: Ensuring fasteners in everyday clothing, uniforms, sportswear, and children's wear maintain their integrity after laundering.
- Workwear and Protective Clothing: Helping manufacturers certify that fasteners in high-performance and safety-critical garments (such as medical textiles, firefighting gear, or military uniforms) meet required durability standards.
- Textile Testing Laboratories: Providing a verified method for third-party testing and benchmarking product quality for clients and regulatory submissions.
- Accessories: Useful for products like bags, shoes, or adaptive clothing for elderly and disabled persons, where repeated washing occurs.
By adhering to this standard, manufacturers can enhance customer satisfaction by ensuring products retain their fastening performance and appearance throughout their intended lifespan.
Related Standards
SIST EN 14959:2006 references several important European and international standards to ensure accuracy and repeatability:
- EN 12241: Touch and close fasteners - Method for closure prior to washing and drying or dry cleaning. Specifies procedures to prepare fasteners for laundering or cleaning tests.
- EN ISO 139: Textiles - Standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing. Defines environmental conditions for specimen preparation and testing consistency.
- EN ISO 6330: Textiles - Domestic washing and drying procedures for textile testing. Outlines standardized washing cycles used to simulate real-life laundering.
- EN 12240: Touch and close fasteners - Determination of overall and effective widths of tapes and the closure.
- EN ISO 15797: Textiles - Industrial washing and finishing procedures for testing workwear.
Meeting the requirements set out in SIST EN 14959:2006 helps ensure compliance with broader European textile regulations and supports claims of product durability, especially for garments or items where fastening security and product longevity are paramount.
By referencing and implementing this standard, industry stakeholders can assure customers and regulatory bodies of the quality and robustness of touch and close fastener products, particularly regarding their resistance to fraying after repeated washing cycles.
