Overview
EN 50632-3-9:2016 (CLC) specifies particular requirements for dust measurement on transportable mitre saws. It is Part 3-9 of the EN 50632 series and is intended to be used in conjunction with EN 50632-1:2015 (general dust measurement requirements for electric motor‑operated tools). This part focuses on measuring concentrations of inhalable and respirable dust emitted when cutting wood and wood‑based materials with transportable mitre saws.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Applies to transportable mitre saws used to cut wood and wood‑based materials; supplements/modifies clauses of EN 50632‑1.
- Test material: Medium‑density fibreboard (MDF) in accordance with EN 622‑5; specified density (750 ± 50) kg/m³ and thickness (19 ± 1.0) mm.
- Workpiece dimensions: Width = two‑thirds of the saw’s maximum horizontal cutting capacity, but not more than 200 mm; any length.
- Test set‑up:
- Saws supplied with a working stand tested on that stand; others on a test bench ~750 mm high.
- Mitre and bevel angles set to 0°.
- New saw blade specified by the manufacturer for fibreboard cutting at the start of each test.
- Speed controls set to the setting recommended for sawing chipboard.
- Feed force: sufficient to ensure stable operation and good performance.
- Test cycle (Table 101):
- Cut pattern: sawing approximately 10 mm wide strips across the workpiece.
- Number of cuts per working time: 50 cuts for non‑sliding mitre saws; 40 cuts for sliding mitre saws.
- If required cuts cannot be completed within 10 minutes, the cycle time may be extended to reach the specified count; such extensions must be reported.
- Instrumentation and reporting: Instrumentation requirements and reporting follow Part 1 unless modified here. Notably, information about any extension of cycle time must be included in test reports.
Applications and who uses it
EN 50632‑3‑9 is used to:
- Verify dust emissions from transportable mitre saws in test laboratories.
- Support manufacturers in product testing, development and compliance for health and safety claims.
- Provide data for safety engineers, R&D teams, and procurement to assess dust exposure and the effectiveness of guards and extraction systems.
- Inform CE‑marking evidence and risk assessments related to airborne wood dust.
Typical users: manufacturers of mitre saws, independent testing bodies, occupational hygiene professionals, standards compliance officers.
