Overview

SIST EN 301 489-17 V1.2.1:2003 is a harmonized European standard focused on Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) requirements for radio equipment and services, specifically addressing the 2.4 GHz wideband transmission systems and 5 GHz high performance Radio Local Area Network (RLAN) equipment. Developed under the EMC Directive and Article 3.1b of the R&TTE Directive, this standard ensures that such equipment operates without causing or suffering unacceptable electromagnetic interference in shared environments. The standard is maintained by the Slovenski inštitut za standardizacijo (SIST) and is identical to ETSI EN 301 489-17.

Key Topics

This standard covers essential topics critical to the design, testing, and deployment of radio equipment in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands:

  • Scope of Applicability: Specifies requirements for wideband transmission systems, including those using spread spectrum techniques in the 2.4 GHz ISM band, and for high performance RLAN/HIPERLAN equipment operating in the 5 GHz frequency band.
  • Test Conditions and Arrangements: Describes comprehensive arrangements for testing both transmitters and receivers, ensuring repeatability and relevance to real-world use cases.
  • Performance Assessment: Outlines procedures to evaluate equipment function under electromagnetic stress, specifying the minimum levels of performance and permissible degradations.
  • Immunity and Emission Criteria: Adopts a structured table of performance criteria for continuous and transient interference events, ensuring that essential user functions and communication integrity are retained.
  • Equipment Types: Recognizes various integration scenarios, including stand-alone radio equipment, plug-in radio devices, and host-dependent systems.
  • Conformity and Classification: Provides rules for equipment combinations, system integration, and correct classification (e.g., portable, mobile, vehicular, fixed).

Applications

The practical applications of SIST EN 301 489-17 V1.2.1:2003 are critical for a wide range of wireless systems and devices, including:

  • WiFi and Wireless LAN Devices: Ensures EMC compliance for consumer and enterprise-grade 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz wireless networking products.
  • Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) Equipment: Applies to devices using the 2.4 GHz band for industrial automation, telemetry, and wireless sensor networks.
  • Public and Private Infrastructures: Used for validating radio communication infrastructure such as access points, routers, and base stations in both public and private deployments.
  • Integrated and Plug-in Modules: Defines testing requirements for radio modules and cards designed for integration into laptops, embedded systems, or other host devices.
  • Regulatory Approval: Provides the technical basis for manufacturers seeking CE marking and market access within the European Economic Area (EEA), as it supports the essential requirements of the EMC and R&TTE Directives.

Related Standards

SIST EN 301 489-17 V1.2.1:2003 is closely connected to several regulatory and technical standards that support electromagnetic compatibility and radio spectrum management:

  • EN 301 489-1: Common requirements for EMC in radio equipment and services.
  • EN 300 328-1: Technical characteristics and test conditions for wideband transmission in the 2.4 GHz ISM band.
  • EN 300 652: Functional specification for HIPERLAN type 1 equipment.
  • EN 301 893: Harmonized EN covering essential requirements for HIPERLAN Type 2.
  • EMC Directive (89/336/EEC): Legal framework for electromagnetic compatibility in Europe.
  • R&TTE Directive (1999/5/EC): Requirements for radio equipment and telecommunications terminal equipment within the EU.

By adhering to SIST EN 301 489-17 V1.2.1:2003, manufacturers, integrators, and regulators can ensure reliable performance and legal compliance for modern wireless communication technologies in demanding RF environments.
